Metal Sonic is a badnik line created by Dr. Eggman and is a part of the Metal Sonic Series. This robot is modeled after Dr. Ivo Robotnik's original Metal Sonic. It initially lacked the cunning and independence it predecessor obtained, making it an unwaveringly loyal servant to Dr. Eggman. The Metal Sonic v3.0 models have proven themselves to be rather fearsome adversaries against Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies, due to possessing the same abilities as Sonic and being able to match the blue hedgehog in his own game.
Due to the continuous destruction of the previous units by the hands of Sonic, the Freedom Fighters and their allies, Metal Sonic v3.0 has been rebuilt numerous times. These models however have been known to become progressively stronger and more dangerous for each model produced, and has only increased more as a threat after being joined by the Metal Series. Though most models have been silent and emotionless, the eighth variation has since been equipped with more free will and speech abilities, as a part of Dr. Eggman's plan to gain the qualities and upper edge that Shard had.

History

First Mission (v3.0)
Edit

Added by Ultrasonic9000Sonic, Metal Sonic and Shadow all got into a three-way fight upon meeting up, with the latter two eventually teaming up against the blue blur. When the three were separated, however, Metal Sonic found itself conversing with the base's caretaker, Isaac, about the history of the instillation and Mobius itself.
When the three started fighting again, they stumbled upon an ancient missile that Isaac was about to launch. The missile was stopped by Shadow and Sonic, and the new Metal Sonic was defeated and destroyed by Sonic who managed to smash it into a missile and throw it into the ground.
Rebuilt (v3.1)
Edit
Following this encounter, Shadow located the facility on Prison Island where Professor Gerald Robotnik had finished creating him and was last seen alive. There, a replacement model of the destroyed Metal Sonic surprised and engaged Shadow in combat. The two were rendered unconscious when Metal Sonic fired a super charged weapon that caused a major explosion nearby. Eggman's robot "daughter" Mecha retrieved the damaged Metal Sonic and brought it back for repairs, while also bringing Shadow with her.

Edit

Added by Ultrasonic9000While holding the upper hand against their organic counterparts, both Metal Sonic and Metal Scourge were quickly destroyed by the Suppression Squad. Their parts were salvaged, however, and used by Sir Charles Hedgehog to reconstruct Shard.
Zone Traveller (v3.3)
Edit
Shortly after the destruction of both Metal Sonic and Metal Scourge by the Suppression Squad, Eggman created a new Metal Sonic model, this time using the newer SXSU-401 engine instead of the typical STH-25, allowing the robot to transport to any other dimension to pursue Sonic. Metal Sonic then left for Moebius against its creator's will to find and attack Sonic and the others in Castle Acorn. Sonic later made an offer for Metal Sonic to help him take out Scourge first, instead of attacking everyone else and getting nowhere. The robot nonchalantly agreed. Though, Scourge did not give up. He rushed to the throne room, followed by Sonic and Shadow. Scourge turned the tables on everyone, claiming he placed Anarchy Beryl in his throne. This managed to turn Scourge into a stronger form; Super Scourge.

Added by Ultrasonic9000Metal Sonic and Shadow then after ended up in the Sol Zone, floating above an ocean. Shadow tried to convince Metal Sonic to no longer obey Dr. Eggman, but Metal Sonic completely ignored Shadow's request and kicked him into the water before flying off to look for the zone's version of Eggman. Furious that it could not locate that zone's Robotnik, Metal Sonic began attacking Southern Island. Shadow, Blaze and Marine showed up shortly to witness the destruction Metal Sonic had caused. Blaze furiously attacked Metal Sonic, but the machine simply used it's powers to reverse Blaze's attack. Neither Shadow or Marine could take down Metal Sonic. However, Shadow tried once again to convince Metal Sonic to work with him, but Metal Sonic simply pointed out they each had different goals, and its was to serve Dr. Eggman. Thus, Blaze set fire to Metal Sonic, and Shadow charged at him. The robot flew towards the Ocean Tornado, and Marine destroyed him with the ship's cannon.
Guarding the New Death Egg (v3.4)
Edit

Added by Ultrasonic9000As the fight went on, it seemed Metal Sonic and its giant silver brethren would be victorious. A light then flashed from the Roboticizer as it activated, however the device exploded due to a malfunction and destroyed the room, heavily damaging the Death Egg. Already being a robot, Metal Sonic was incompatible to the Roboticization process just like other mechanics, and blew up alongside the Roboticizer. Shortly after, Sonic merged from the wreckage while holding its severed head.
Eggman then sent him in the form of Titan Metal Sonic to attack the city, but he was destroyed when Naugus moved him in front of the Death Egg's beam.
Mission: Destroy the Royal Family (v3.5)

Personality and Traits
Edit
Initially, due to its creator's experience with previous failures with free will programming, Metal Sonic and the vast majority of its incarnations displayed little to no personality or free will, as Dr. Eggman did not want Metal Sonic to turn against him.
As per its function, Metal Sonic was programmed to be single-minded and unquestioningly loyal to Eggman, and had no interest in anything else, besides carrying out its functions and its creator's assignments. Despite attempts by Shadow to reason with one model, all versions of Metal Sonic v3.0 have remained devoutly loyal to Eggman. It is notable, that the same model was also persuaded to join Sonic, Shadow, Amy Rose, Robert O'Hedge, and Silver the Hedgehog against Scourge; however, that was only because Metal Sonic logically deduced that it would be get nowhere when fighting all the others at the same time, and that it could more efficially carry out its mission after finishing Scourge. As soon as the odds was against it, however, Metal Sonic abandoned its alliance, and tried to complete its mission before it was too late.
The Metal Sonic models from v3.0 to v3.6 were best described as "silent killers", being cold and merciless, even mindless, drones and remained silent during the course of battle. For some, speech was not even an option: the fifth, sixth, and seventh models were voiceless, and the third model merely served as a radio mouthpiece for Eggman. This traits, however, was changed with Metal Sonic v3.7 and onwards, which were installed with a voice codex, allowing Metal Sonic to speak freely, as Eggman decided that "that silent killer shtick was getting old".
When the eight model was equipped with a Power Gem, containing its previous incarnations' memories, and a more developed personality programming, Metal Sonic displayed many more individual traits, which was expressed by a cold outrage at the losses of previous models and a single-minded desire to destroy Sonic. It also briefly expressed rebellious tendencies at the idea of being ordered to attack another enemy, but Eggman's safeguards quickly rendered it docile.
Powers and Abilities
Edit
As a robotic clone of Sonic the Hedgehog, the Metal Sonic models possess many of Sonic's powers and abilities; They possess impressive strength, enough to stop Sonic's attacks, along with moderately strong armor. The rocket pack in their back allows the Metal Sonic models to move at speeds equal to, or even possibly surpassing those of Sonic himself, and can even utilize them to gain flight. They can also perform several of Sonic's techniques, such as his Spin Dash.
The speed and strength of the different Metal Sonic models seems to vary from model to model; while Sonic was able to handle Issac, Shadow and Metal Sonic v3.0 all at once on his own, Metal Sonic v3.2 was too strong for both Sonic and Scourge to beat. Because they are built in Sonic's image, the Metal Sonic models can counter most of Sonic's abilities by matching them head-on, making them fierce opponents against the blue blur. Just like the Egg Beater however, this trait is perhaps the Metal Sonic models' greatest weakness as well, as other strong individuals teaming up against one Metal Sonic can quickly bring it down.
Over time, the newer line of Metal Sonics began to receive extra features and upgrades. The third Metal Sonic created by Dr. Eggman, possessed a type of energy cannon that it fired from out of the front of where its stomach would be. The fourth Metal Sonic model had the same cannon design which it used on Shadow and was also able to teleport due to the SXSU-401 engine. The sixth Metal Sonic was equipped with a self-destruct mechanism that send Antoine into a coma. The seventh version of Metal Sonic can do a combo attack with Mecha Sally using a laser installed in its back.
After the seventh models battle with Shard, Eggman determined that his decision to leave out a free will algorithm in Metal Sonic, to prevent rebelion, made it weaker then the original. As a result, Metal Sonic v3.7 was installed with the the doctor's last Power Gem, granting it a free will algoritm and all the battle data of the previous models' battles, so it could think during a battle and learn from its mistakes, thereby making it more effective. To keep Metal Sonic from rebeling against him like his predecessor, the doctor also installed a soft-reboot defiance kill-switch to keep it in line. Unfortanatly, the Power Gem was destroyed in Metal Sonic's subsiqunt battle with Shard, but the ninth model, rebuilt from the parts of the eigth, retained its free will and memories even without the Power Gem.
Trivia
Edit
- Curiously, another Metal Sonic was seen being built in the background when Espio was sneaking through Eggman's lab in Archie Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 174. It can be assumed that this is the Metal Sonic later used to attack Scourge at Freedom HQ.
- Inclusion of Eggman being able to talk through the third model via voice communication may be a reference to Metal Sonic's appearance in Sonic Rivals 2, as Eggman actually used Metal Sonic to talk to Shadow in the game.
- The fourth Metal Sonic spoke in a manner similar to that of HK-47, where he states what type of thing it's going to say before it says it. For example: it says "Explanation: Super form ensures 0% success rate." in Archie Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 196
- The fifth Metal Sonic is strikingly similar to the second model as both were seen in action for only a short time and physical details.
- Metal Sonic's first engine is named the STH-25, after the Sonic the Hedgehog issue, Archie Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 25, which it first appeared in.
- Metal Sonic's newest engine, the SXSU-401, is named after the first issue it appeared in a Sonic X comic and Sonic Universe respectively:
- SX__-40_ = Sonic X #40
- __SU-__1 = Sonic Universe #1
- This Metal Sonic's designation as v3.0 was confirmed by writer Ian Flynn of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic blog. [1]
