This article is about the Metal Sonic robot series created by Dr. Eggman. For the Metal Sonic created by Robotnik Prime, see Shard the Metal Sonic. For the Metal Sonic created by Dr. Eggman Nega in Sonic Rivals 2, see Metal Sonic 3.0.

Template:Character Metal Sonic v3.0 is a Badnik line created by Dr. Eggman and is a part of the Metal Sonic Series. This robot is modeled after Dr. Ivo Robotnik's original Metal Sonic. It initially lacked the cunning and independence it predecessor obtained, making it an unwaveringly loyal servant to Dr. Eggman. Metal Sonic v3.0 has proven to be a rather fearsome adversaries against Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies, due to possessing the same abilities as Sonic and being able to match the blue hedgehog in his own game.

Due to the continuous destruction of the previous units by the hands of Sonic, the Freedom Fighters and their allies, Metal Sonic v3.0 has been rebuilt numerous times. These models however have been known to become progressively stronger and more dangerous for each model produced, and have only increased more as a threat after being joined by the Metal Series. Though most models have been silent and emotionless, the eighth variation has since been equipped with more free will and speech abilities, as a part of Dr. Eggman's plan to gain the qualities and upper edge that Shard had.

History

First Mission (v3.0)

Metalsonic3

Metal Sonic v3.0

When the Freedom Fighters and Shadow the Hedgehog found a lost military base from before the Xorda attacked Earth, Dr. Eggman constructed his first known Metal Sonic robot since arriving on Mobius Prime and sent him to investigate, as well as engage Sonic in combat.

Sonic, Metal Sonic and Shadow all got into a three-way fight upon meeting up, with the latter two eventually teaming up against the blue blur. When the three were separated, however, Metal Sonic found itself conversing with the base's caretaker, Isaac, about the history of the instillation and Mobius itself.

When the three started fighting again, they stumbled upon an ancient missile that Isaac was about to launch. The missile was stopped by Shadow and Sonic, and the new Metal Sonic was defeated and destroyed by Sonic who managed to smash it into a missile and throw it into the ground.

Rebuilt (v3.1)

Following this encounter, Shadow located the facility on Prison Island where Professor Gerald Robotnik had finished creating him and was last seen alive. There, a replacement model of the destroyed Metal Sonic surprised and engaged Shadow in combat. The two were rendered unconscious when Metal Sonic fired a super charged weapon that caused a major explosion nearby. Eggman's robot "daughter" Mecha retrieved the damaged Metal Sonic and brought it back for repairs, while also bringing Shadow with her.

Metal Sonic v3.1

Some time later, Metal Sonic soon captured Sonic and brought him to Dr. Eggman, who used a device to control Sonic's body. When Metal Sonic went into an apparent stasis, Snively, frustrated with Eggman's childlike methods of defeating Sonic, decided it would be a good time to betray his uncle once again. When he attempted to reprogram Metal Sonic to work for him however, he found that it was spying on him. Eggman revealed that he knew of Snively's treacherous ways, and programmed Metal Sonic, along with every other robot, to monitor Snively in case he decided to back stab him once again. When Knuckles destroyed the device in Sonic's ear, Eggman and Metal Sonic attacked Knothole, but Metal Sonic was easily destroyed by the combined efforts of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

Who is the real Sonic? (v3.2)

Metalsonic3

Metal Sonic v3.2

A new Metal Sonic model was produced and used to attack Freedom HQ. Unlike previous models, this Metal Sonic allowed Dr. Eggman to speak through it via radio transmission. When Scourge the Hedgehog explained to Eggman that he and the Suppression Squad had taken over Freedom HQ, Eggman simply had the new Metal Sonic attack him. Sonic arrived on the scene shortly afterwards, but Scourge decided he preferred to fight alone and not get help from Sonic, despite having little success against the robot. Metal Sonic then proceeded to attack both Scourge and Sonic, and reinforcements arrived moments later in the form of Metal Scourge.

While holding the upper hand against their organic counterparts, both Metal Sonic and Metal Scourge were quickly destroyed by the Suppression Squad. Their parts were salvaged, however, and used by Sir Charles Hedgehog to reconstruct Shard.

Zone Traveller (v3.3)

Main article: Captain Metal

Shortly after the destruction of both Metal Sonic and Metal Scourge by the Suppression Squad, Eggman created a new Metal Sonic model, this time using the newer SXSU-401 engine instead of the typical STH-25, allowing the robot to transport to any other dimension to pursue Sonic. Metal Sonic then left for Moebius against its creator's will to find and attack Sonic and the others in Castle Acorn. Sonic later made an offer for Metal Sonic to help him take out Scourge first, instead of attacking everyone else and getting nowhere. The robot nonchalantly agreed. Though, Scourge did not give up. He rushed to the throne room, followed by Sonic and Shadow. Scourge turned the tables on everyone, claiming he placed Anarchy Beryl in his throne. This managed to turn Scourge into a stronger form; Super Scourge.

Metalsonic3

Metal Sonic v3.3

Metal Sonic was temporarily defeated by Super Scourge along with the others. After then deducing that defeating Scourge was no longer an option it then tried to attack Sonic again. It was later transported to another location along with Shadow when he tried to override Metal Sonic's teleporter engine with Chaos Control. Arriving in an alternate universe (the zone of Sonic X), Metal Sonic was employed by that reality's version of Dr. Robotnik to attack everyone. Once it made its charge however, it was once again transported to a different reality by Shadow.

Metal Sonic and Shadow then after ended up in the Sol Zone, floating above an ocean. Shadow tried to convince Metal Sonic to no longer obey Dr. Eggman, but Metal Sonic completely ignored Shadow's request and kicked him into the water before flying off to look for the zone's version of Eggman. Furious that it could not locate that zone's Robotnik, Metal Sonic began attacking Southern Island. Shadow, Blaze and Marine showed up shortly to witness the destruction Metal Sonic had caused. Blaze furiously attacked Metal Sonic, but the machine simply used it's powers to reverse Blaze's attack. Neither Shadow or Marine could take down Metal Sonic. However, Shadow tried once again to convince Metal Sonic to work with him, but Metal Sonic simply pointed out they each had different goals, and its was to serve Dr. Eggman. Thus, Blaze set fire to Metal Sonic, and Shadow charged at him. The robot flew towards the Ocean Tornado, and Marine destroyed him with the ship's cannon.

Guarding the New Death Egg (v3.4)

NextMetalS026

Metal Sonic v3.4

The next Metal Sonic model appeared during Sonic and Sally's attempt to thwart Dr. Eggman's Operation: Clean Sweep aboard the Death Egg Mark 2. Soon after Eggman revealed his new world Roboticizer and a simulation of its devastating effects on Mobius, Sonic moved to attack the doctor when a new Metal Sonic swooped down from behind and charged him. Ranting on the latest model, Sonic battled his robotic counterpart as it worked in sync with a damaged Silver Sonic III from an earlier fight.

As the fight went on, it seemed Metal Sonic and its giant silver brethren would be victorious. A light then flashed from the Roboticizer as it activated, however the device exploded due to a malfunction and destroyed the room, heavily damaging the Death Egg. Already being a robot, Metal Sonic was incompatible to the Roboticization process just like other mechanics, and blew up alongside the Roboticizer. Shortly after, Sonic merged from the wreckage while holding its severed head.

Eggman then sent him in the form of Titan Metal Sonic to attack the city, but he was destroyed when Naugus moved him in front of the Death Egg's beam.

Mission: Destroy the Royal Family (v3.5)

Metalsonic3

Metal Sonic v3.5

The sixth Metal Sonic was built after Operation: Clean Sweep and appeared alongside the weaponized Mecha Sally when Dr. Eggman attempted to assassinate Elias Acorn and his family while relocating from New Mobotropolis to Feral Forest, and at first focused on Sonic as it's primary target while proving to be too much for the deroboticized Bunnie. As the robots battled with the convoy's escort, the Knothole Freedom Fighters, Dr. Eggman ordered Metal Sonic to latch onto the Mobo-Cruiser carrying the Acorn family and detonate. Antoine managed to remove Metal Sonic from the vehicle in time, however, and was the only one caught in the robot's explosion, which destroyed Metal Sonic.

First of the Metal Series (v3.6)

MetalSeries

Metal Sonic v3.6 alongside the Metal Series

Dr. Eggman unvield the seventh incarnation of Metal Sonic v3.0 to his Dark Egg Legion Grandmasters along with the rest of the Metal Series for the purpose of serving as the doctor's new enforcers as a result of Snively's betrayal. It accompanied Mecha Sally in joining the Eggman Empire's attack on Central City in an effort to find Snively. During the battle, Metal Sonic and Mecha Sally were able to take E-123 Omega by surprise and attacked him using their laser cannons. As Snively attempted to escape again, Mecha Sally and Metal Sonic effortlessly destroyed the G.U.N. fighters sent out to bring down Snively's craft before returning to the Egg 'Stache Flyer to continue the chase.

He was later sent out along with Team Metal to fight Team Freedom and the Secret Freedom Fighters. Metal Sonic was destroyed by Shard, Heavy and Bomb.

Searching for Himself (v3.7)

Metal sonic v3

Metal Sonic v3.7

Metal Sonic was then rebuilt by Eggman and given a Power Gem and a Free Will Algorithm in order to make him more effective and was uploaded with all of his previous incarnations memories and combat abilities. Metal Sonic then began hunting down Shard. At the climax of the battle, Metal Sonic realised that his power gem was a weakness, so he blew up his body in order to erase the weakness, greatly damaging Shard in the process. (SU #50)

Dimensional Mission (v3.8)

Metal sonic v3

Metal Sonic v3.8

Dr. Eggman created the ninth incarnation from the remains of the eighth incarnation shortly after its battle with Shard. With the robot's memories and free will still intact, Metal Sonic prepared to attack New Mobotropolis again, but Eggman told him that since they were docking at the arctic refueling station, they would leave the city to the Tails Doll. Metal Sonic then tried to resume his primary goal of destroying Sonic, but the doctor deployed Metal Sonic to the Interdimensional Gateway to meet his new partner, claiming he would like him new partner as he was a base villain like himself, to which Metal Sonic accepted. As Eggman then told Metal Sonic not to pout, since he was now the doctor's ultimate killing machine, Metal Sonic replied coldly that the mission was acceptable and that they all would pay. (SU: #50)

Due to Eggman and Wily rewriting the history of Sonic's world, Metal Sonic's history and memories were changed to be identical to that of his game counterpart's.

After the planet had once again been reset by the Genesis Wave, Metal Sonic was sent with Bass to kidnap Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Amy Rose. The four were subsequently transformed into the Roboticized Masters,  who were more easily able to pass between worlds than Bass and Metal Sonic. He interfered when the Roboticized Masters stole a Chaos Emerald, appearing as a blue blur to Mega Man. Metal Sonic traveled to Green Hill Zone to trick Mega Man into fighting Sonic. Apparently taking a liking to his partnership with Bass, he volunteered the docs for a mission to capture Dr. Light and put an end to his interference in the doctors' plans. (WC: #1, #2, #3, #4)

Several hours after kidnapping Dr. Light, Bass and Metal Sonic chased an intruder who was trying to foil their plans and unleashed the Chaos Devil as a distraction. After both threats were neutralised, the intruder was roboticized. (WC: #4, #8)

When Dr. Light was trying to contact one of his allies, Eggman ordered Metal Sonic to throw him out the Wily Egg's drop hatch. Later, he was ordered by the docs to assassinate the blue heroes alongside Bass and Treble when they invaded the Wily Egg. (WC: #9, #10)

In the antechamber, Metal and Bass battled Sonic. During the battle, Sonic tried to attack Metal, teasing him that he beat him in every race and every fight, and even when he was the dragon monster. However, Sonic got hit by a right hook from his copy, and the two charged at each other. (WC: #11)

New World

After the Super Genesis Wave had been completed and changed Sonic's world. Metal Sonic reappeared on board the Death Egg. After Eggman returned to his battle station, he sent Metal Sonic to assassinate Sally Acorn.

Personality

Initially, due to its creator's experience with previous failures with free will programming, Metal Sonic and the vast majority of its incarnations displayed little to no personality or free will, as Dr. Eggman did not want Metal Sonic to turn against him.

As per its function, Metal Sonic was programmed to be single-minded and unquestioningly loyal to Eggman, and had no interest in anything else, besides carrying out its functions and its creator's assignments. Despite attempts by Shadow to reason with one model, all versions of Metal Sonic v3.0 have remained devoutly loyal to Eggman. It is notable, that the same model was also persuaded to join Sonic, Shadow, Amy Rose, Robert O'Hedge, and Silver the Hedgehog against Scourge; however, that was only because Metal Sonic logically deduced that it would be get nowhere when fighting all the others at the same time, and that it could more efficially carry out its mission after finishing Scourge. As soon as the odds was against it, however, Metal Sonic abandoned its alliance, and tried to complete its mission before it was too late.

The Metal Sonic models from v3.0 to v3.6 were best described as "silent killers", being cold and merciless, even mindless, drones and remained silent during the course of battle. For some, speech was not even an option: the fifth, sixth, and seventh models were voiceless, and the third model merely served as a radio mouthpiece for Eggman. This traits, however, was changed with Metal Sonic v3.7 and onwards, which were installed with a voice codex, allowing Metal Sonic to speak freely, as Eggman decided that "that silent killer shtick was getting old".

When the eight model was equipped with a Power Gem, containing its previous incarnations' memories, and a more developed personality programming, Metal Sonic displayed many more individual traits, which was expressed by a cold outrage at the losses of previous models and a single-minded desire to destroy Sonic. It also briefly expressed rebellious tendencies at the idea of being ordered to attack another enemy, but Eggman's safeguards quickly rendered it docile.

Powers and Abilities

As a robotic clone of Sonic the Hedgehog, the Metal Sonic models possess many of Sonic's powers and abilities; They possess impressive strength, enough to stop Sonic's attacks, along with moderately strong armor. The rocket pack in their back allows the Metal Sonic models to move at speeds equal to, or even possibly surpassing those of Sonic himself, and can even utilize them to gain flight. They can also perform several of Sonic's techniques, such as his Spin Dash.

The speed and strength of the different Metal Sonic models seems to vary from model to model; while Sonic was able to handle Issac, Shadow and Metal Sonic v3.0 all at once on his own, Metal Sonic v3.2 was too strong for both Sonic and Scourge to beat. Because they are built in Sonic's image, the Metal Sonic models can counter most of Sonic's abilities by matching them head-on, making them fierce opponents against the blue blur. Just like the Egg Beater however, this trait is perhaps the Metal Sonic models' greatest weakness as well, as other strong individuals teaming up against one Metal Sonic can quickly bring it down.

Over time, the newer line of Metal Sonics began to receive extra features and upgrades. The third Metal Sonic created by Dr. Eggman, possessed a type of energy cannon that it fired from out of the front of where its stomach would be. The fourth Metal Sonic model had the same cannon design which it used on Shadow and was also able to teleport due to the SXSU-401 engine. The sixth Metal Sonic was equipped with a self-destruct mechanism that send Antoine into a coma. The seventh version of Metal Sonic can do a combo attack with Mecha Sally using a laser installed in its back.

After the seventh models battle with Shard, Eggman determined that his decision to leave out a free will algorithm in Metal Sonic, to prevent rebelion, made it weaker then the original. As a result, Metal Sonic v3.7 was installed with the the doctor's last Power Gem, granting it a free will algoritm and all the battle data of the previous models' battles, so it could think during a battle and learn from its mistakes, thereby making it more effective. To keep Metal Sonic from rebeling against him like his predecessor, the doctor also installed a soft-reboot defiance kill-switch to keep it in line. Unfortanatly, the Power Gem was destroyed in Metal Sonic's subsiqunt battle with Shard, but the ninth model, rebuilt from the parts of the eigth, retained its free will and memories even without the Power Gem.

Trivia

  • Curiously, another Metal Sonic was seen being built in the background when Espio was sneaking through Eggman's lab in Sonic the Hedgehog #174. It can be assumed that this is the Metal Sonic later used to attack Scourge at Freedom HQ.
  • Inclusion of Eggman being able to talk through the third model via voice communication may be a reference to Metal Sonic's appearance in Sonic Rivals 2, as Eggman actually used Metal Sonic to talk to Shadow in the game.
  • The fourth Metal Sonic spoke in a manner similar to that of HK-47, where he states what type of thing it's going to say before it says it. For example: it says "Explanation: Super form ensures 0% success rate." in Sonic the Hedgehog #196.
  • The fifth Metal Sonic is strikingly similar to the second model as both were seen in action for only a short time and physical details.
  • Metal Sonic's first engine is named the STH-25, after the Sonic the Hedgehog issue, Sonic the Hedgehog #25, which it first appeared in.
  • Metal Sonic's newest engine, the SXSU-401, is named after the first issue it appeared in a Sonic X and Sonic Universe respectively:
SX__-40_ = Sonic X #40
__SU-__1 = Sonic Universe #1
  • This Metal Sonic's designation as v3.0 was confirmed by writer Ian Flynn of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic blog. [1]
  • Interestingly, Metal Sonic retains memories from v3.3, who still exists as a separate being.
