Ingenious inventor, expert pilot and Sonic's best friend.

Sonic Boom Official Website[1]

Miles "Tails" Prower is one of the main characters in the Sonic Boom series. He is an anthropomorphic two-tailed fox and the best friend and sidekick of Sonic the Hedgehog. He serves as Team Sonic's aerial pilot, gadget specialist, strategist and overall brains.[6]

Concept and creation

Tails' attire was meant to emphasize his role as the "gadget guy" of the team. He received a belt to "really show" his gadgets and aviator goggles to reinforce that he was also the team's pilot.[2]

The sports tape Tails wears is inspired by fighters and American football players and is meant to give him a sense of practical heroism by showing that that he is not vain, which is a trait more fitting for villains, when saving the world and to give him a more grounded approach.[7]

Appearance

Tails is almost identical to his main series counterpart in appearance, except that he is slightly taller, with longer legs and thinner twin-tails. For attire, he wears a pair of brown goggles with orange lenses on his head, a brown work belt with a strap around his shoulder and a small emblem adorned with his signature symbol on the front, and white medium-long gloves with no cuffs. He also wears red sneakers with white toes and cuffs, which have white sports tape wrapped around the middle.

Tails with his friends in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Tails was out foiling another of Dr. Eggman's evil plans with Sonic, Knuckles and Amy. They eventually arrived on an island where they find an ancient tomb sealed deep within the island where Tails and the gang come across a powerful villain named Lyric, who plans to power his army of war mongering robots with the Chaos Crystals to destroy everything organic and create a world of twisted metal and robots. To stop Lyric, Tails and his friends have to work together and find the Chaos Crystals before Lyric.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Tails came to rescue Sticks with Sonic, Knuckles and Amy when the badger was caught in a rockslide. There, Sticks claimed the rocks said an underground army would destroy them all, much to Tails' exasperation. Later, Tails teamed up with Sonic, Knuckles and Sticks to track down and save Amy who had been kidnapped by Lyric and his robot army, who sought to use her archeological knowledge to find a Lost Crystal of Power and seize its power.

TV series

On a day of battling Dr. Eggman, Tails came to Sonic's aid in the Tornado as he faced Burnbot. During the battle, Burnbot clipped the Tornado's wing and Tails crashed. Tails later awoke at home, having been brought there by Sonic who then fired him as his sidekick to protect him from harm. Tails soon after successfully applied for Sonic's sidekick try-outs, as he welcomed all candidates. For Sonic's test, Tails faced fellow candidates Fastidious Beaver and even Eggman in a ground-and-air race, where the latter made Tails' Tornado crash into a frozen lake by Burnbot in the middle of the race. Sonic saved Tails, but Burnbot made Sonic fall into the lake. Tails dived in and saved Sonic and together they beat Burnbot and escaped. Soon after, Sonic and Tails reconciled, and Tails was rehired.[8]

When Dr. Eggman, Orbot and Cubot where in need of a place to stay while their lair underwent repairs, Tails let them to stay in his house. However, Tails and Sonic were annoyed by Eggman's obnoxious behavior and they almost kicked him out until Amy made them give him another chance. Eggman then kept them awake all night with activities, but the next morning, Eggman revealed that he lied about his lair so he could exhaust them, and summoned Obliteratorbot to destroy them. However, Obliteratorbot misheard Eggman's orders and attacked his lair instead. Having been convinced by Eggman to stop it, Tails, Sonic and Eggman reached Obliteratorbot's kill switches in the lair despite their downiness while their team distracted it, though they were too late to save the lair.[9]

Having perfected UT, a robot capable of translating any language, Tails demonstrated it to his friends, but they took a disliking to UT when it translated their private thoughts from the subtext of their speech. The next day, Tails tried to show UT to his friends again when it "translated" their conversations into insults. Upon examination, Tails discovered that this UT was a fake, planted by Eggman to tear the team apart. Tails ventured to Eggman's lair to rescue UT, but without his team who did not want UT saved, and he made a deal with Eggman: in exchange for letting UT go, he would become the doctor's assistant. Eggman accepted, so Tails sent a message with UT to his friends, telling about his departure. However, Tails planned for UT to translate his message into a distress call, and Team Sonic soon arrived and freed him while destroying Eggman's Mega. Thanking his team, Tails saw good times with UT, but Sticks quickly threw it into the sea.[10]

When Team Sonic saved the village from Eggman's Anti-fire Bot, Tails and his team noticed Sticks' bad treatment of animals and convinced her to get a pet to learn about compassion. However, Sticks ended up choosing a disgusting robo-dog named Buster. Over the next week, Buster was an annoyance to Tails and the others which culminated in Buster keeping them from stopping a robbery made by Orbot and Cubot. Tails and the rest tried making Sticks give up Buster until Eggman came with a gift for Buster and revealed he created him. The gift turned Buster into a larger robot who caught Tails and the team, but Sticks assumed control over Buster, who released Tails and the others and got rid of Eggman. As Sticks released Buster since he was too dangerous, Tails found a octopus he wanted as a pet until it swallowed him.[11]

While Tails and his team were in the village as it was bombarded by meteors, Sticks saved them thanks to her own defense system. Shortly after, Tails and the others heard from Sticks that she had been nominated for an Awardy Award, but refused to go to its associated gala because she would embarrass herself. As such, Tails helped Sticks train to be a proper lady. At the gala, Tails learned that Eggman had been nominated as well (by cheating). However, when Eggman did not get the award and attacked with his robots, Tails and his team attempted to fight but was trapped, Fortunately, Sticks saved Tails, and his team drove Eggman away and save the gala.[12]

When preparing Amy's decorative lunch, Tails made Amy feel unappreciated by tinkering with the soothing music. When Eggman showed up to hire Amy to redecorate his lair for Modern Lair Magazine, Tails was shocked when Amy accepted it. Eventually, Tails and his team began to miss Amy, so they went to Eggman's lair to check on her, but Eggman claimed Amy had chosen to stay with him. Tails and his friends did not buy it and broke into the lair where Tails freed her from a cage, and they made peace. Team Sonic then trashed Eggman's lair and his robots on their way out, which cost Eggman his place in Modern Lair Magazine.[13]

When Tails and Sonic were testing his Reverse-polarizer, Orbot showed up and asked Tails to repair Cubot. Shortly after, the duo went to Eggman's lair after picking up the signal from two doomsday devices. There, they discovered that Eggman and his intern Dave were competing for whom could destroy the world best with their doomsday devices. Tails and Sonic therefore tricked them into calibrating their devices so they would cancel each other out when activated. However, the devices created a black hole instead, so Tails gave Sonic his Reverse-polarizer which he used to destroy the black hole.[14]

Having created an out-of control vacuum-robot, Tails called for Sonic's help to stop it. Afterwards, Tails came with Sonic to his shack where he had a cookie from an unknown sender, and Tails convinced Sonic to let him have it. However, it was actually an Evil Cookie made by Eggman which turned Tails into a clone of the doctor. Now evil, Tails joined Amy, Knuckles and Sticks (who had also eaten the evil cookies) under Eggman's tutelage to plot Sonic's destruction. When Sonic came to save them, Tails and the others cornered him, but then began fighting over who deserved the honor for capturing Sonic. During the fight, Tails and the others were restored to normal by Sonic and Eggman (who Sonic turned good with a cookie containing his DNA). The good Eggman thought they would work together now, but Team Sonic did not like the idea and turned the doctor back to normal.[4]

During a race, Tails and Sonic found Gogoba Village, which they saved from the Weasel Bandits as they plundered it, and the Gogobas made them stay for a victory feast, though at their own expense. Feeling terrible, Sonic and Tails tried to leave several times, but the Chief and villagers kept guilt tripping them to stay until they made them remain as their protectors. When they failed to get away by giving the Gogobas a security system, Tails and Sonic escaped when they guilt tripped the chief into letting them go. Back home though, the Gogobas had moved into Sonic's Shack so Sonic could protect them. No sooner, thy were attacked by Eggman and his robots, but after destroying the robots, Tails and Sonic convinced Eggman that the Gogobas would be a great asset to him. Having guilt tripping the Chief into the idea, the Gogobas finally left the duo as they departed with Eggman.[15] On a trip to the market place, Tails found Orbot and Cubot performing horribly as musicians for money. Out of pity, Tails gave them a few coins.[16]

As Tails and his team saw Sonic and Knuckles play coconut hurl, Eggman came by to attack them with Cowbot, a robot which would create a large explosion when destroyed. Tails came up with reprogramming Cowbot instead, but when he did, it made Cowbot head for Eggman at his lair to destroy him. Tails accompanied Sonic to warn Eggman, but the doctor convinced them to help, and as they prepared for Cowbot, the group upgraded the defenses at Eggman's lair. While waiting for Cowbot to come, Tails, Sonic and Eggman bonded over roasted marshmallows. When Cowbot arrived, their defenses got gunked up with marshmallows, but it gave Tails the idea of gunking up Cowbot's systems too. When Tails' plan succeeded, Eggman revealed his master plan was to make them upgrade his systems for his own usage, but Sonic foiled his plan and left with Tails.[17]

While his team fought Eggman's Octopus-bot, Tails tried using his untested unbolteriser on Eggman, but it malfunctioned and caused a rockslide that nearly crushed his friends. After beating Eggman, Tails was scolded by must of his team. Ridden with guilt, he withdrew from the team until he could fix his invention. When he did and ran some tests however, Tails was contacted by Sonic who revealed he and the team had been captured by T.W. Barker. Tails soon came to their rescue where he freed his team and helped stop Barker, and Tails made amends with his friends.[18] Tails later served as judge for Sonic and Knuckles' Gofaball game which Sonic easily won. As Knuckles tried to use up his bad luck by inflicting brutal misfortunes on himself, Tails and Amy got Sonic to stop him while they sought Sticks' aid. No sooner though, Eggman invaded the island. Tails and his team tried stopping him, but Knuckles' bad luck and Eggman's currently good luck ruined their chances. However, they still beat Eggman by letting Knuckles temporarily join the doctor and have his bad luck cancel out Eggman's good luck, thus neutralizing them both. Tails soon learned though that Knuckles' bad luck had passed onto him.[19]

While stargazing, Team Sonic found a meteor landing close by, which Eggman arrived to steal. After Sonic and Eggman tried to take the meteor, only for it to knock them upon touch, Tails began analyzing it and discovered its ability to switch minds between others. Realizing this happened to Sonic and Eggman, Tails brought the meteor to his team just as Sonic and Eggman (each in the other's body) were fighting. Tails verified who Sonic was to his team and they used the meteor to restore Sonic and Eggman to their original selves.[20]

On a bright day on the beach, Tails, Knuckles and Amy came to Sonic's aid and helped him defeat Dr. Eggman and his Big Boy. Shortly after, Sticks came and told them that Tails' house had been robbed. What Tails' discovered though, was that his whole house had been stolen by what Sticks described as a "cyborg rock golem" seemingly made by Eggman, that rose from underground. As Tails complained, Sticks seemingly caught the scent of the robot. Though it turned out Sticks was only smelling the grass, the team still found the Rock-cyborg by following its footprints and Tails helped set an ambush for the robot after checking on his house. With Sticks, Knuckles and Amy's aid, Tails made the robot fall over and allowed Sonic to destroy it, which made his house fall back on its foundation.[21]

Not long after, Tails, Sonic, Amy and Sticks fought Eggman when he returned in his Big Boy, only to face Knuckles who had teamed up with Eggman because he had had enough of Amy's criticism. In his carelessness, Tails got himself captured along with his team and put into the Big Boy's cargo hold. Knuckles revealed he pretended to work for Eggman to fool him, but when Amy depressed him over his plan's flaws, Tails figured out how to restore the echidna's confidence and had him attack Eggman. Tails and the others were then freed by Sonic while Knuckles drove Eggman away. After getting rid of Orbot and Cubot however, Tails found Amy panicking over her piko hammer being gone.[22] Back at his house, Tails tried to help calm Amy, but he, Sonic and Knuckles only made her freak more out. As such, Sticks sent them out to find the piko hammer. Despite combing the island, Tails found nothing, but as he and Sonic returned, the piko hammer suddenly fell into Sonic's hand. After Amy got her hammer back, Tails went home for the night.[23]

Agreeing to a climatic battle with Dr. Eggman's Big Boy mech, Team Sonic promised Eggman to face him on the beach, but Tails, Sonic, Knuckles and Amy later forgot about it. Hours later, Eggman, Orbot and Cubt tracked them down in the Big Boy, and Team Sonic began fighting him, but soon saw they were at a disadvantage against the upgraded Big Boy. Coming to their aid was Sticks, who claimed she had found an all-powerful weapon: the Rock of Justice. Exasperated, Tails and the rest refused to believe a rock could aid them and continued the fight. However, Sticks saved them with the Rock of Justice by throwing it at the Big Boy, causing it to ricochet into the mech and destroy it. After scaring Eggman and his lackeys scared off, Tails was in awe of the Rock of Justice, only to hear that its power had been used up. Tails paid his respect to the weapon and helped Sticks back home with Amy.[24]

Personality

Tails is a friendly young fox with a plucky "can do" attitude and an inherent optimism.[25] The most creative in his group, Tails is a proficient tinker with a big imagination.[26] He is constantly furnishing his mind with big dreams of epic inventions to not only give his team the edge but also make life easier,[5] though while some of his creations are brilliant, some are questionable and not always reliable.[27] Despite his mishaps, Tails can always be relied to come through for other people.[26] Unlike Sonic who runs headlong into trouble, Tails plans out the best possible approach to take on a challenge.[6] Logically orientated, Tails relies on facts and science over questionable theories, and believes that every occurrence has an logically explanation.[25][19]

At times, Tails can be shy in the face of the unknown, but his friends will always help push him out of his comfort zone.[26] Sometimes though, he feels like he has to prove himself to his teammates,[28] like when applied to be Sonic's sidekick again after Sonic fired him to protect him or isolating himself until he had fixed his unbolteriser.[8][18]

Powers and abilities

Gifted with a pair of twin-tails, Tails can utilize these unique appendages to achieve flight by twirling his twin-tails around like rotary blades, like a helicopter. He can also use them as a turbine to propel himself forward, allowing him to move almost as fast as Sonic.[27] By using his twin tails as rear propellers, Tails can also move underwater with great ease.[8]

Tails is a genius-leveled mechanic and inventor,[10] capable of creating many forms of robots, programs and even devices capable of bending the laws of physics. His remarkable intelligence and skills are so well-founded that he can create advanced programs in a very short time and invent a car that can circle the earth on half a jar of kosher pickles while busy with other tasks.[29] He is well an expert air pilot and one of the best aerial fighters that can use a plane in battle.[1]

Combat-wise, Tails' fighting style mostly revolves around the use of long-ranged gadgets, including smoke-bombs, homing bombs that stick to their targets, and small robots that can attack enemies.

Relationships

Sonic the Hedgehog

A picture of Tails and Sonic hanging out.

Tails is the best friend and sidekick of Sonic the Hedgehog. He has a brotherly relationship with him and is Sonic's equal partner in his adventures.[2][30] They are extremely close and both are willing to sacrifice their life for the other.[8] However, Tails is not afraid to tell Sonic that he is wrong whenever that happens.[2]

Sticks the Badger

Sticks the Badger is one of Tails' teammate and close friends, though there is an opposing dynamic between them. While Tails is an inherent optimist and relies on facts and science, Sticks is generally suspicious and has crazy ideas which causes a great deal of bricking.[25] Like his other friends, Tails usually disregards Sticks' questionable theories and ideas, only to be proven wrong in the end.
