The mine is a recurring obstacle in the Sonic Boom video games. It is an explosive device that detonates when touched and/or approached by playable character, the resulting explosion of which can inflict damage.
Mines are found in the games' primary playable levels where they serve to complicate the player's progress. They are located in numerous places along the pathways where they either block the player's path or hide from view to take the player by surprise. Mines are often set in specific positions that makes it difficult for the player to pass them without touching them.
Touching or attacking a mine with a playable character will cause it to explode instantly. In some cases, however, a mine will also start a short countdown should a player get too close to them before it explodes. Should an unprotected playable character get caught in a mine's explosion, the player will take damage. However, this explosion can as well destroy surrounding obstacles and enemies.
The mines' appearance and size have varied between games. However, their general design is that of a dark sphere with spikes on the surface.
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric
In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, the mines' appearance vary slightly depending on the level, though they are generally designed as dark grey and dark golden spheres with red lights and blunt spikes. In this game, should the player approach them, the mines will flash red and beep for a few seconds before detonating. Upon being destroyed, they release a few Rings.
Mines are commonly encountered as floating obstacles in water sections where the Hydro Dash and Riptide are usable. This include River Rush, Bygone Island, Slowpoke Isle and Crater Lake. In the underwater sections of Undersea Bolt, there are also mines floating all around, making it hard to navigate. These mines are connected to the seafloor by chains which the player can destroy with the Angler.
Certain levels have their own take on the mines. The Pit feature mines on the ground which have additional blunt spikes and a ground plating. While they work as any other mine, these ones will also emit smoke during their detonation sequence. In the Abandoned Research Facility, there are also much larger, cone-shaped mines in the water sections that do not have a countdown when approached, but otherwise detonate upon touch.
Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal
In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, the mines have a rather simple design, resembling black circles with glowing red spikes. Like in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, the mines will flash red for a few seconds before detonating if the player gets too close. In this game, they are only encountered in the underwater sections for the Sea Fox, where the Sea Fox can destroy them from a distance with its missiles.
Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom
In Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, the mines were initially black spheres with red lights across their equator and a red stripe above and below them. In later updates, the mines were redesigned as black spheres with one red stripe across their equator and white spikes.
Unlike in previous games, the mines do not have a countdown sequence this time, but their explosions can take out nearby Badniks. While the player's usual option is to simply dodge mines during gameplay, they can also Dash through them without harm. Also, Shadow's Chaos Spear can detonate the mines from afar, which will in turn detonate nearby mines as well, thus creating a chain reaction that can take out multiple mines and enemies.
Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice
In Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, the mines reprise their role from Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal as obstacles to be encountered in the Sea Fox's underwater sections. In this game, they are much more detailed in detain and resemble more the typical naval mine, being a grey sphere covered in blunt spikes. Other than that, they act and function just like in Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.
In the Hovercraft sections, there are also similar mines floating on the water surface. These mines each emit a yellow field that will flash red for a few seconds when entered before the mines themselves explode. However, they cannot be destroyed with the player's weaponry.
