Mobians are creatures in various Sonic the Hedgehog continuities for which the main setting is the planet Mobius. It is a western term created for the Sonic canon in the west. The precise definition of "Mobian" varies by continuity, sometimes being a general term for residents of Planet Mobius and sometimes referring specifically to the various species of anthropomorphic animals that are the main residents of Mobius, thus being used in comparison to other species, such as Humans.

Mobians are sapient, being capable of speech and generally (but not universally) bipedal and anthropomorphic. Even those based on animals typically have human-like hands with five fingers. Some may also have toes, although that is less common since, for instance, Mobians who are based on anthropomorphic ungulates (such as horses and pigs) have hooves for feet. Many of them, regardless of the diet of their base animals, are now mostly omnivorous, but they can also be vegetarian, pescetarian or vegan.

Any base animal, from the ancient diatryma, eohippus, kubanochoerus, triceratops, protoceratops, sabertoothed cat and mesohippus to the modern rabbit, chipmunk, cat, skunk, horse and hedgehog can become Mobians.

Definition[]

Mobians are usually one of the three main species featured in Sonic media, sometimes together with humans and animals.

Mobians are characterized by being anthropomorphic animals, possessing a wide range of aspects, species and colors. Physically, they are characterized by a curious anatomy, as they have bodies of various shapes, some more muscular, others smaller, thinner, more corpulent etc. Most possess the quality of having thin legs and some possess human-like feet.

Mobians (especially males) do not usually wear a lot of clothes. The most common to see on them is the use of footwear that are usually of a large size. Others wear more complete clothing, such as dresses and jackets. It is also common for them to use accessories such as necklaces, bracelets, headphones and chains.

Mobians are usually no larger than a human, regardless of the animal or being that they are inspired by, so it is not uncommon to see that they are able to move in any environment.

The most outstanding quality of Mobians, is that many possess powers and abilities, both physical and magical, ranging from extreme speed to super strength.

Animation[]

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog[]

In the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series, the population of Mobius consists mainly of anthropomorphic animal Mobians. However, humans feature regularly in the series in certain communities, such as Hill Top Village and Robotropolis.

Sonic Underground[]

The Sonic Underground television series depicts a Mobius inhabited principally by anthropomorphic animal Mobians, although the variety of forms is greater than in previous series. While there are mostly just the basic anthropomorphic animals like hedgehogs, for some reason there are others that bear little resemblance to standard animals, such as having six arms or three legs. The only human Mobian in the series is Dr. Robotnik along with one random human female seen in Winner Fakes All.

The series never mentioned how or when animals evolved into Mobians, as the series never went into depths on these details.

Books and comics[]

Sonic the Comic[]

In Sonic the Comic, anthropomorphic animals comprise the majority of the population of Mobius, as well as some other planets, such as the Drakon Empire's fish people, and dimensions. A large percentage of the population is comprised of humanoid creatures that are not based on a specific animal species, with there being a very small number of humans living among them, this including Dr. Robotnik and the Marxio Brothers.

Archie Comics[]

In the Archie Comics continuity, the term "mobians," also known as "mobosapiens,"[1]Sonic the Hedgehog #125, "Sonic Adventure 2.5: Omega"</ref> exclusively refers to the anthropomorphic animals that live on the main planet in the setting, this being Mobius before the Super Genesis Wave and Sonic's World thereafter. Other species in the setting have their own names, such as humans and Overlanders.

Before the Super Genesis Wave, Mobius was a futuristic version of Earth. After a human act of aggression towards an extraterrestrial emissary sometime in the 21st century, the alien Xorda bombarded the planet with powerful Gene Bombs in an attempt to eradicate all humanoid life on the planet. These explosives caused the native animals of the planet to mutate and rapidly evolve, growing larger and more intelligent. When the aliens returned, they realized that the new dominant species contained a "sizable percentage of human DNA." The few humans that survived the initial attack would go on to have lightly-mutated descendants, called Overlanders, that only had four fingers and toes instead of the standard five. Dr. Eggman, Snively Robotnik, Gerald Robotnik, Maria Robotnik, Hope Kintobor, Abraham Tower, and Iron Queen are the only Overlanders to have five fingers and toes. Some of the human species survived and lived in isolation in Station Square for thousands of years. As such, humanity maintains an extremely small presence on Mobius.

After the Super Genesis Wave reset the universe in Sonic & Mega Man: Worlds Collide, the planet setting of the series was renamed to "Sonic's World," with the term "Mobian" being consequently dropped. The term was re-established in the summer of 2016,[2] three years later, as a colloquial term to refer to the anthropomorphic animals that inhabit Sonic's World. The Super Genesis Wave also made humans the regular inhabitants of the planet, with little to no distinction between their video game counterparts.
