Ocean Palace (オーシャン パレス Ōshan Paresu?) is the second stage of Sonic Heroes. It is a direct continuation of Seaside Hill, this time taking place in the various ancient temples in the area.

Description[]

Ocean Palace looks exactly like Seaside Hill, and as such takes place in a coastal area over the sea. This time around, it is more centered in the ancient ruins around here, taking place inside of massive temples and palaces.

Story[]

Team Sonic[]

After making their way to the Whale Island, Team Sonic find themselves in an ancient sea palace. After overcoming the local hordes of Badniks, the heroes escape the temple.

Team Dark[]

Team Dark infiltrates the sea palace after reaching the Whale Island. The team destroy the local Badniks and escape.

Team Rose[]

Continuing along on their adventure to find their lost friends, Team Rose reaches the sea palace, but leave without any trace of their companions.

Team Chaotix[]

Team Chaotix enters the sea palace, wherein they are tasked by their mysterious client to find a Chao who has been kidnapped by the Badniks.

Gameplay[]

The basic gameplay design of Seaside Hill is carried over to Ocean Palace, being an easy stage with weak enemies and many opportunities to use the different team formations to progress. Nevertheless, the stone blocks that can be pushed with Power formation are not in this level, being replaced with stone doors that open when hit three times with said formation. Additionally, fans are gimmicks that are introduced here; they can be used to reach higher areas using Power formation.

Overview[]

Team Sonic[]

  • Mission: Escape from the ancient ruins!
  • Extra Mission: Get to the Goal Ring within 5 minutes!

Team Sonic's version of the level starts with the characters being launched into a narrow path with a large loop followed by a two-way one. They are then launched into the sea temple, whose entrance is blocked off by a stone door. After this door is unlocked using Power formation, the player is greeted by a horde of Egg Pawns and also have to break through ruins that block off the path. They should then switch to Fly formation in order to reach a higher area to continue.

The player afterwards encounters their first Checkpoint of the level and are forced into Speed formation to run through a narrow path that has a fan which, when the player uses Triangle Dive in Power formation, will allow them to reach a much higher area and proceed. Not long after, they will have to unlock another stone door that leads to a split path: the left one can be reached using Fly formation and has many sharp turns and Dash Panels, while the right one is a long path that ends with another fan. Both paths meet shortly after and, after another door is broken through, the player is introduced to the Triangle Jump mechanic; while in Speed formation, they can jump through walls and over pits. If this move is successfully pulled off, they are rewarded with a blue Power Core. If not, they can just continue from a lower path. Next, they will have to use Triangle Dive over some fans with Floating Item Boxes high above, before being forced into Speed formation to run through a long path and then into Power formation to defeat a horde of Badniks, open a door, and run through a two-way loop.

Sonic Heroes giant turtles

The section with the giant turtles in Ocean Palace.

Afterwards, the player will be launched to the next section: a series of giant turtles with Item Boxes and Badniks on them. At the beginning there is a second Checkpoint. There are many paths here to take since most of the turtles are reached using cannons, which lead to different areas depending on the formation.

At the end of the turtle section, the player is launched to another giant temple where they are greeted with the third Checkpoint and a horde of Badniks, where they are adviced to practice the Fire Dunk with Power formation. Next, they will have to make their way up through the outskirts of the temple through fans using Power formation. Next, they will have to break through rocks and a stone door, where there is another section that requires them to use the Triangle Jump. If the player is curious, they can fly above this section and unlock cases with Item Boxes inside. If they successfully make their way through with Triangle Jump, they can reach the next section. If not, they can take a lower path with fans to get to this section.

Sonic Heroes Kao

At the top of the temple, the player will take their fourth and final Checkpoint of the level and be launched to a long, wide path, where they will be chased by one, two, and then three Kao, which are basically giant wheels that roll at great speed. In order to outrun these Kao, the player will have to switch to Speed formation. After this section, they will be launched to a smaller temple with the Goal Ring.

The ranking for this level is as follows:

Rank Score[1]
Mission 1 Mission 2
Result 026 50,000 45,000
Result 028 45,000 40,000
Result 030 40,000 35,000
Result 032 32,000 30,000
Result 034 <32,000 <30,000

Team Dark[]

  • Mission: Flee from the ancient ruins!
  • Extra Mission: Defeat 100 enemies!

Team Dark's version of Ocean Palace is largely the same as Team Sonic's, but it has more obstacles and enemies that make this level much tougher to complete.

For the Extra Mission, it is possible to meet the 100 enemy threshold within a single cycle through the stage, though it requires the player to transport themselves across most of the giant turtles in the said sections to encounter more enemies.

The ranking for this level is as follows:

Rank Score[1] Time[1]
Mission 1 Mission 2
Result 026 90,000 5:00
Result 028 85,000 5:30
Result 030 70,000 7:00
Result 032 55,000 9:00
Result 034 <55,000 >9:00

Team Rose[]

  • Mission: Find the ruins floating on the sea!
  • Extra Mission: Collect 200 rings!

Team Rose starts the level at the first Checkpoint in Team Sonic's version, and ends it shortly after the turtle section. This version is much easier than the other because it has weaker enemies and more objects to snatch.

The ranking for this mission is as follows:

Rank Score[1] Time[1]
Mission 1 Mission 2
Result 026 40,000 5:30
Result 028 35,000 6:00
Result 030 30,000 7:30
Result 032 25,000 9:00
Result 034 <25,000 >9:00

Team Chaotix[]

  • Mission: Rescue the captured Chao!
  • Extra Mission: Rescue the captured Chao without being detected by the enemies!
Sonic Heroes Ocean Palace captured Chao

The captured Chao at the end of Ocean Palace.

Like Team Rose, Team Chaotix's version of Ocean Palace starts at the first stone door in Team Sonic's version. The most noteworthy change in this version is that there is a Warp Flower halfway through that skips the turtle section completely. The level ends just before the section with the Kao. The goal for the Chaotix is to grab a Normal Chao at this point that is trapped inside a cage, which can be destroyed in Power formation. This Chao is also guarded by seveal Badniks, which can be quickly destroyed with the Chaotix Recital Team Blast.

The second mission requires the player to get through Ocean Palace to reach the Chao without getting detected by the Badniks. If any character is detected by an enemy, the player will respawn at the beginning of the stage or at the last Check Point they have touched although their life count will not be deducted. This mission can be done by switching to Speed formation and using the Leaf Swirl to make Espio invisible, allowing him to get through the hordes of robots undetected or destroy them if necessary. As such, the player should refrain from using Charmy or Vector to attack to destroy an enemy as they will easily detect the character and only use them if their formation-based moves are required.

By the section where the player would learn to use Triangle Jump, the player should have obtained three blue Power Cores (one of them is also included in the second Floating Item Box accessed via Triangle Jump. These allow Espio get to level 3 and be able to blow off the Egg Pawns' shields, which will make it easier to defeat them. In said section as well, the player should use Leaf Swirl for Espio to go invisible just before he uses the Triange Jump, otherwise it is possible for his teammates to accidentally get detected by the Egg Bazooka-wielding Egg Pawn in the lower path of the section. The player should only switch only after they reach the other side of the gap.

To unlock the Chao's cage in the midst of the Badniks present in the area, the player must destroy the Badniks undetected first in order to be able to switch to Power formation; if the player has filled their Team Blast Gauge, it is again recommended to use Team Blast to take them out whilst still remaining undetected. If their Team Blast Gauge is not full, there is a route that the player can venture away from the enemies which allows the player to drop down to the three Item Boxes (two being Rings and the other being a 1-Up) and a Wide Spring which provides a Ring power-up to help fill the Team Blast Gauge quicker. The spring also provides a means to return back to the area with the enemies and Chao. Afterwards, the player can simply spam moves to fill the remainder of their Team Blast Gauge.

The ranking for this mission is as follows:

Rank Score[1]
Mission 1 Mission 2
Result 026 50,000 43,000
Result 028 45,000 40,000
Result 030 37,000 30,000
Result 032 32,000 25,000
Result 034 <32,000 <25,000

Trivia[]

  • Elements of this stage appear in Seaside Hill in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations. For example, after the player listens to the background music for Seaside Hill in the Modern level, the music then switches to Ocean Palace's music.
  • For some reason, the player can never see the Kaos falling into the water after they outrun them in the chase part of the level. The player can only hear them falling into the water pit between the chase area and the central palace entrance in which the Goal Ring is located. If the player tries spinning the camera while in the air to see them falling in, it would result in the player either falling into the water pit below them or getting hit by the Kaos in mid-air, causing them to fall into the water pit.
  • This is another one of the levels from the various games in which Sonic (or any other playable character) gets chased by something.
  • It is possible for Team Chaotix to reach the giant turtles section if they use glitches related to the Ascending Flight to fly over an invisible barrier over the stone door (which normally contains the Warp Flower to transport the player to the final section of the stage which skips this segment of the stage).
    • The turtle section still has gimmicks that allow the player to pass through to the other side of. Interestingly, this section features Search Flappers but they do not teleport any enemies even if the player is shone by their light. Even in the Extra Mission, getting close to the Search Flappers or destroying them while being detected by them will not cause the player to fail the mission.
    • Getting detected by the other types of enemies present in the area (ie. the Egg Pawns and regular Flappers) will cause the player to fail the Extra Mission as normal.
  • Interestingly enough, if the player use glitches to get to Team Sonic's/Team Dark's goal area with Team Chaotix, the Goal Ring still has the gold star in its center, instead of a back arrow.
