Orbinaut[1] (ポーラ[2] Pōra?, lit. "Pola"), also known as Orbitnaut,[3] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, sea urchin-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman and a variant of the Badnik sub-series with the same name.

Appearance[]

Orbinaut sonic 3

As a part of the Orbinaut series of Badniks, this Orbinaut variant has a gray metallic sphere for a body with a pair of eyes on it and four spiked balls orbiting it. It resembles the Star Pointer, but it lacks the yellow line surrounding the middle of its body, and has gray spiked balls instead.

Overview[]

And it's annoying as like it was before

Sonic getting hit by Orbinaut.

The Orbinauts make their only appearance in in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, where they appear exclusively in Launch Base Zone. In gameplay, their attack patterns are identical to the Uni Unis from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, keeping their spiked balls around them for defense and moving towards the playable characters once they get close. However, Orbinauts will stop moving once the player turns around to face them. Their spiked balls also orbit them marginally faster than any other Orbinaut variant, except for the Tubinaut.

Orbinauts are tricky to defeat, as the player can only defeat them without getting harmed by having Invincibility, doing a precise hit between its spiked balls with Spin Jump, performing a well-timed Insta-Shield as Sonic, or during the brief time of invulnerability the player gets after taking damage. Upon destruction, the Orbinauts will release an Animal and award the player with 100 points.

Trivia[]

  • The Orbinaut's Japanese name, Pola, is derived from pora, meaning "look!".
