The PlayStation Portable (also known as PSP) is a handheld game console made by Sony designed to rival Nintendo's highly successful Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. Released in December 12, 2004 in Japan and in 2005 in North America and the PAL Regions, it sold up to eighty Million units. It uses a special kind of disk called Universal Media Disc (UMD) making it the first (and only) handheld console that uses optical discs. The Sonic Rivals series are exclusive to this handheld device. The PSP has been discontinued by around 2014. Its successor is the PlayStation Vita.
