The Power Ring is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog television series. They are golden rings invented by Sir Charles Hedgehog for his nephew Sonic the Hedgehog to boost his power. They are products of the Lake of Rings, which can produce one every twelfth hour[1] (originally the lake could only produce one every twenty-fourth hour[2]).

Following Dr. Robotnik's takeover, the Power Rings became a vital tool in the Freedom Fighters' war against the dictator.

Description[]

Sonic Conversion 189

Sonic using the power of a Power Ring.

The Power Rings are golden glowing bands about the size of a basket ball in diameter. No one knows for sure how Power Rings work except their creator, Sir Charles Hedgehog.[1] They come from the Lake of Rings, which hold a machine at the bottom that contains the Power Rock, which carries loads of energy.[1] Initially, the machine could only produce a Power Ring every twenty-fourth hours, but that process was later accelerated to every twelfth hours.[1][2] Apparently, the Power Rings appear to be highly condensed forms of energy.[1] Their power does not last very long though.[2]

The Power Rings' main property is empowering Sonic the Hedgehog. When in the hands of Sonic, he can draw upon their power to temporarily make himself more powerful, drastically increasing both his speed and strength. When doing so, Sonic is surrounded by a golden aura and various particles can be seen revolving around him. Additionally, Power Rings can be used to counter some of the effects of roboticization; a roboticized victim can have their free will restored for a short time by simply touching a Power Ring[3] and by projecting their power they can neutralize a Roboticizer's energy, although multiple Power Rings may be needed to fully divert a Roboticizer's power.[4] Because Charles made them only for his nephew though, no one can truly use their power except Sonic.[5]

History[]

TV series[]

Season one[]

Heads or Tails 098

Tails grabbing a Power Ring coming out of the Lake of Rings.

Once, Tails and Rotor took a Power Ring from the Lake of Rings and put it in Sonic's backpack. Later, Tails pulled the Power Ring out from Sonic's backpack and handed it over to Sonic, thus giving Sonic the power boost needed for him and Tails to flee from Dr. Robotnik's forces in Robotropolis.[5] Sonic later used a Power Ring to attack a monster that stood in the way of him, Sally and Antoine in the tunnels underneath Ironlock Prison. Thanks to its power, Sonic, while Sally and Antoine held onto him, pierced through the monster. The trio quickly discovered though that the monster was just another robot.[6] Sonic later used the power of a Power Ring again to escape the Swat-Bot factory in Robotropolis. Later, Tails and Rotor got another Power Ring from the Lake of Rings for Sonic and put it in his backpack. Sonic soon after used this Power Ring to rescue "Sally" from Robotropolis.[7] Later, in the Crystal Mine, Sally gave the roboticized Sir Charles a Power Ring, restoring his free will for some time. However, Charles returned it once its effects wore off.[3] A Power Ring was later used by Sonic to stay in Maga while he was being blown out of a wind tunnel known as the Breath of Mobius.[8] When later racing Robotnik's robot-cheetah, Sonic initially used a Power Ring to overtake Robotnik's machine, but after he abandoned the race in order to help his friends sabotage Robotropolis's backup generator, Sonic put his Power Ring in-between the backup generator's gears in order to save Antoine's life, which yielded the additional result of the backup generator exploding.[9]

Antoine eventually stole a Power Ring from the Lake of Rings during the night and took it with him to Robotropolis where he offered it to Robotnik over video, all in a fool-hearted attempt to capture Robotnik. Initially, Robotnik wanted to take the Power Ring by force, but Antoine forced Robotnik to meet him on the outskirts of the city where he said he would give the doctor the Power Ring. However, Antoine's plan soon fell apart, and Robotnik took the Power Ring from him. He then placed the Power Ring into the Sonic Radar, which allowed the machine to track and fire very accurate laser shots at Sonic. In the end, however, Antoine got the Power Ring out of the Sonic Radar and gave it to Sonic, who, thanks to its power, escaped from Robotnik and tricked him into destroying the Sonic Radar.[2] Sonic later used a Power Ring to give himself a boost when running on a treadmill that powered a rocket engine that had fallen near Knothole Village. Later, Sonic and Rotor used the same treadmill to generate an electrical field for destroying a Stealthbot that was looking for Knothole Village.[10] Some time after, Sonic gave a Power Ring to Sally, Antoine and Bunnie Rabbot, who had been trapped in a cage with energized bars. By pushing the Power Ring against the bars, the heroes were able to make the bars disappear under the pressure of the strong energy. Not long after, Sally, Antoine and Bunnie held onto Sonic, who used the power of the Power Ring to escape from the Island of Nimbus with his friends before the island exploded and sank.[11]

Warp Sonic 221

Sally shows Griff a Power Ring.

Some time afterward, Sonic used a Power Ring to push Griff's Hover Sled, which also had Sally and Antoine onboard, away from Ratbots. Sonic later showed Griff the Power Ring, which gave the latter the idea of stealing the Power Rock from Knothole Village. When Sally later showed Griff around Knothole Village, she also showed him a Power Ring when it emerged from the Lake of Rings.[1] Later, when Sonic, Sally and Antoine were sinking into a pond and were about to drown, Rotor pulled a Power Ring out of Sonic's backpack and gave it to Sonic. Thanks to the power of the Power Ring, Sonic got himself out of the pond and rescued Sally, while Rotor pulled out Antoine.[12] Sonic soon after used the Power Ring to create a breach in a force-field that Dr. Robotnik had locked him and his friends in. Thanks to this, Sonic, their friends and their Terapod allies were able to escape.[13]

Season two[]

Game Guy 239

Sonic trying to harness a Power Ring in Robotnik's fortress.

Sonic eventually tried to use a Power Ring to destroy the pinball machine that Dr. Robotnik had imprisoned him in. However, Sonic's harnessing of the Power Ring got interrupted by a giant flipper. Fortunately, Ari, who caught the ball in which Sonic was trapped in with a magnet, allowed Sonic to properly harness the Power Ring's power. Sonic then got out of the ball holding him and destroyed Robotnik's pinball table while empowered by the Power Ring.[14] Sonic later used a Power Ring to let him and Sally escape from the Shriek-Bot and Robotropolis. Later, Tails pulled a new Power Ring out from the Lake of Rings for Sonic and put it in his backpack. Sonic subsequently brought this Power Ring to his Uncle Chuck, which temporarily restored his free will when he grabbed it. Not long after, Sonic and Sally would pick up another Power Ring from the Lake of Rings which Sonic needed to catch up to the roboticized Chuck, who had kidnapped Tails and Antoine. After escaping a Mega Muck pit, Sonic used this Power Ring to run to Robotropolis and save Chuck.[15] Tails later got to the Lake of Rings and picked up a Power Ring when it emerged, which Sally and Chuck then gave to Sonic, who had been hit by a Memory Scrambler. Thanks to the power of the Power Ring, Sonic regained his memories.[16]

While visiting the past, Sonic and Sally used a Power Ring to fire themselves from a cannon-shaped tree trunk in the Great Forest, thus allowing them to reach Robotnik's flying ship, the Destroyer.[17] Sonic would later use a Power Ring to get to Dragon's Nest with Sally before Robotnik could catch Dulcy. Sonic later used another Power Ring while rescuing the Mother Dragon kidnapped by Robotnik in order to avoid being shot by Mega Muck Units and Swat-Bots.[18] When later on a run through the Great Unknown, Sonic used a Power Ring to escape a Void portal that opened up in front of him.[19] Some time after, Sally gave Sonic a Power Ring so that Sonic, with his bolstered power, could dig up to a test Doomsday Pod and create a whirlwind that was supposed to destroy this test pod. Sonic later used a second Power Ring to run across a field of storm clouds while pursued by the Doomsday Pod. In the end, the lightning destroyed the Doomsday Pod.[20] When later visiting Drood Henge, Sonic used a Power Ring to escape the Swat-Bots that cut him off.[21] Sonic would soon after use a Power Ring to escape Robotnik's forces in Robotropolis and rescue Sally, Antoine and Bunnie, who were sabotaging Robotnik's Fuel Tankers. Sonic later used another Power Ring to get to Robotnik's HQ and rescue Chuck as he was being interrogated. There, Sonic created a whirlwind that scattered Robotnik's Swat-Bots everywhere.[22] Sonic later tried protecting himself from the process of a Roboticizer that Robotnik had locked him in with a Power Ring. The power of one Power Ring was insufficient however, so Sonic added two more to the mix. As a result, the Roboticizer overloaded and launched the capsule that contained Sonic out of the Doomsday Machine.[4]
