Princess Sally, also known as Sonic the Hedgehog Presents: Princess Sally, is a three-issue Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off comic series published by Archie Comics. It is the first mini-series in the comic's history and is centered around the leader of the Freedom Fighters: Sally Acorn.

The series introduced the re-occurring character Geoffrey St. John and his group, the Rebel Underground. It also introduced the group that would later become the Substitute Freedom Fighters. Additionally, the series introduced Robotnik's Auto Automatons, which would be used throughout the series. Original printings of this series are hard to find, and the entire series was reprinted in Sonic Select Book Seven.

Development[]

The Princess Sally miniseries was originally requested by Sega, as at the time they had interested in creating a video game starring her.[1]

Ken Penders and Mike Kanterovich were tasked with creating the series, and originally pitched two alternate storylines for the miniseries before settling on the final plot. The first pitch revolved around an alternate origin for Alicia Acorn. Sally would discover that her mother was an evil Robian and was currently leading an underground civilization beneath Robotropolis. Had the plot come to fruition, the Robian Alicia would've gone on to become a reoccurring threat to both the Knothole Freedom Fighters and Dr. Robotnik. However, Sega rejected this pitch without explanation, leading Penders and Kanterovich to try again.[1]

The second pitch was a Thelma & Louise-styled plot which involved Sally and Bunnie Rabbot heading off on a road trip to stop a threat that had come about on the other side of Mobius. Like with the first pitch, this one was rejected by Sega without explanation.[1]

Penders and Kanterovich then wrote a third pitch based on the idea of Sally recruiting new Freedom Fighters, which led to the creation of Geoffrey St. John. This pitch was accepted by Sega and used as a base for the finalized issues.[1]

Reception[]

Although the comic had critical success, the comic met with little commercial reception. The comic was intended to draw more girls into the Sonic franchise but marketed in the same channels as was the main Sonic series, a "boys" comic. It was due to this perceived unpopularity that Archie writer Ken Penders took Sally out the comics in Sonic the Hedgehog #47 by killing her off although she was ultimately revived in Sonic the Hedgehog #50.[citation needed]

According to writer Ken Penders, Sega themselves were not pleased with the final result of the series.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, the early unused covers for the Princess Sally miniseries appear to connect in a way similar to the covers of the Knuckles the Echidna comic series. However, the final covers for the series do not connect.
