Puyos (ぷよ?), originally known as Puyo Puyo, are the eponymous creatures of the Puyo Puyo series. First appearing in the Madou Monogatari series, the Puyos were originally created by Compile and are now owned by Sega. Puyos come in many shapes and sizes but are always treated as mere fodder.

In gameplay, when four or more Puyos of the same color are stacked together or lined in a match, they will disperse and award points.

Description[]

Anatomy[]

Puyos come in five different colors: red, yellow, green, blue and purple (not including the gray "Garbage Puyo"). Each different-colored Puyo have their own eye expressions.

Game appearances[]

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine[]

The game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is actually a localized version of the 1991 arcade puzzle game, Puyo Puyo. Instead of the game being translated, the whole story and franchise of the game were replaced with Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog elements, with the Puyos being renamed as "bean folk".

Sega All-Stars series[]

Sega Superstars[]

In Sega Superstars, Puyos appear in the EyeToy game Puyo Pop Fever where the player must position themselves to guide them into the corresponding pots and allow bombs to topple off the bottom of the screen.

Sega Superstars Tennis[]

In Sega Superstars Tennis, Puyos appear on the Splash Garden course (Coconut Beach course in the Nintendo DS version) during the minigame Puyo Pop Fever. Here, Puyos get stacked while the player serves the ball to pop them. Each Puyo is worth 40 points. The game is over when either the timers or the bubble gauge are filled.

Sonic Runners[]

In Sonic Runners, the "Puyopuyo!! Quest Collaboration Event" was held to promote the game Puyopuyo!! Quest.

In this event's exclusive storyline, Team Sonic discover that Puyos are raining down on Earth. The trio run into Amitie and Accord, who have no clue as to how they got there. With the world being filled with Puyos, Sonic accepts Accord's request to find their other friends to stop the crisis. Along the way, it is revealed that Dr. Eggman has used the magic of a Puyo Coin to join the two worlds together so he could harness the power of magic users for a new weapon. As Team Sonic proceeds with their search, Eggman gets in over his head with the magic users and is forced to escape when his prisoner Satan retaliates. Thanking Team Sonic for their help, the Puyos return home with all the objects from their world.

Sonic Mania[]

MeanBeanMachineMania

Dr. Eggman challenges Sonic to a Puyo match.

In Sonic Mania and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, during the Chemical Plant Act 2 boss battle, Dr. Eggman forces Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray into his Mean Bean Machine which plays like a regular match from the original Puyo Puyo game.
