There's no reason to shout at people or talk about them behind their backs, especially when Dark Gaia's influence then turns each word into a Red Fright to attack humanity.

— Description, Sonic Unleashed[1]

The Red Fright (レッドスプーキー Reddo Supūkī?, lit. "Red Spooky") is an enemy that appears in the nighttime Stages in Sonic Unleashed. They are a variant of Dark Gaia's Minions and an empowered version of the Dark Frights.

Appearance[]

Following the tradition of powered-up versions of Dark Gaia's Minions, the Red Frights are nearly identical to the Dark Frights. They closely resemble balloon-shaped birds with small wings, a small knot on the bottom of their body, and they have a small horn on their forehead. They have red and black skin, and have yellow-green markings on their body that looks like a face, while their actual black faces with yellow-green eyes are hidden inside their "mouth".

Overview[]

The Red Frights and the rest of Dark Gaia's Minions came into being when Dark Gaia broke apart at the beginning of Sonic Unleashed due to its premature awakening by Dr. Eggman. These fragments were then spread across the earth and became Dark Gaia's Minions, with the Red Frights amongst them. Specifically, Red Frights were created from the influence of people's shouts and thrash talk.[1] They first appear in Jungle Joyride Night Act III: Deep Jungle on the Wii/PlayStation 2 version and Windmill Isle Night Act 1 in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version.

Despite being an empowered version of another type of Dark Gaia's Minions, the Red Frights are still some of the weakest of their kind, as their attacks do little damage. However, they have much more health than the Dark Frights and can be surprisingly difficult to bring them down for good for the weaker player. The Red Frights usually appear in larger groups of Dark Frights, but they can also in rare cases appear in groups of their own. Additionally, the Red Frights can easily be picked up by Sonic the Werehog and be used as melee weapons and throwing objects, but they do not cause much damage in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version due to their soft bodies.

In battle, like the Dark Frights, the Red Frights attack by either tackling Sonic at high speed or bouncing on top of him, except the Red Frights do it faster and more aggressively. When not attacking, they move erratically around in the air by rolling which makes them hard to predict and target properly.

Upon the reconstruction of Dark Gaia by Dr. Eggman, all of the Red Frights (along with the other types of Dark Gaia's minions) were returned to the beast, who was later defeated and sealed within the planet's core.

Powers and abilities[]

The Red Frights are able to move around by either teleporting into an area in a puff of purple smoke or emerging from black puddles on the ground. As a Dark Gaia minion, the Red Frights can possess people by latching onto the deepest, darkest part of the heart, and generate despair, negative emotions or even erratic behavior that are completely opposite to the person's personality.

As an empowered version of the Dark Frights, the Red Frights are faster, stronger and more durable than their counterparts. They are capable of flight, allowing the Red Frights to float through mid-air in any direction they may desire. They are also able to dash through mid-air at high speed.
