The red fruit[1][2] (赤い実[3] Akai mi?) is an obstacle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an extraterrestrial flora cultivated only by the Black Arms for both consumption and offensive purposes.[2]

Description[]

The red fruit is a large red and purple-glowing spiky pod standing on a thin stem. Inside them glows a faint yellow/white light. The red plants are naturally poisonous,[4] making them dangerous to touch.

Overview[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the red fruits were brought to earth by the Black Arms during their invasion of the planet. In gameplay, red fruit pods dot the landscape of various stages, such as Westopolis and Prison Island. Touching them directly will damage the playable character, so the player must destroy them with weapons. Destroying red fruits will also fill the Hero Gauge.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the red fruits' early history is much like that of their game counterparts. When Eclipse the Darkling was stranded on Angel Island, he grew a number of red fruits for him and the Dark Arms to live off of.[5][6]
