Destroy the evil Roboiler!!!

— Status Strip, Sonic Spinball (16-bit)

The Roboiler, also known as the Robo-Boiler,[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It was a boiler in the Lava Powerhouse that was created by Dr. Robotnik during the Veg-O-Fortress incident.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Roboiler takes the appearance of a giant gray boiler with a red coating on the inside. It has two temperature indicators on its sides, with two steam jets attached to the top parts of said sides. Also, two platforms protrude from the edge of the opening into the Roboiler. Inside it, it has four yellow robotic drones called "Roboheads".

In Sonic Spinball (8-bit), the Roboiler looks mostly the same, except that it has only two Roboheads inside it.

History[]

Sonic Spinball[]

In the 16-bit verion and 8-bit version of Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik created the Roboiler when he built the Veg-O-Fortress. Eventually, Sonic the Hedgehog came across the Roboiler while trying to escape the Lava Powerhouse, and destroyed it.

Battle[]

The Roboiler is the boss of Lava Powerhouse in the 16-bit version and 8-bit version of Sonic Spinball, and the second boss overall in both games. It is battled with Sonic the Hedgehog.

Boss guide[]

During the battle, the Roboheads will move to one of five locations within the Roboiler. They will also vomit lava whenever Sonic hits them. To defeat the Roboiler, the player has to destroy all the Roboheads within the Roboiler by jumping into the Roboiler and hitting them. Each Robohead takes five hits to be destroyed.

When one of the Roboheads is destroyed, the remaining heads will temporarily vanish to protect themselves, leaving Sonic to tumble out of the Roboiler. The player then has to reenter the Roboiler to hit the heads anew. In the 8-bit version of the game, one of two Roboheads do not vanish after destroying another, making it possible to destroy the second one at the same time.

The most notable hazards in the room with the Roboiler are the steam jets guarding the top corners of the boiler, which can block the player's passage. Also, if the player lands on the closed hatch next to the steam jet twice, it will open, which will result in Sonic falling down. Additionally, hitting the two Drop Targets on the bottom of the Roboiler will cause the drain plugs in the level to close.

When fighting the Roboiler, if the player falls into the drain on the left or right side of the room, Sonic will fall into the upper steam arena. If the player falls into the drain in the center, Sonic will fall down to the bottom of the level where he will emerge from a hole above a cauldron of boiling hot lava while hanging onto a chain. To get out from there, the player has to utilize the chain hanging from the hole, where the player must swing back and forth on to make it far enough to jump off at the right moment and escape. However, the chain will break if Sonic stays on it for too long (the game gives the player a countdown from five). This can only be done up to two times; the player will not be able to save themselves from falling into the center drain a third time, which will cost a life.

After destroying all the Roboheads, the Roboiler explodes, and the player will have cleared the level.

Trivia[]

  • In the 8-bit version of the game, each part of the Roboiler rewards the player with a certain amount of points; hitting collision parts gives 2,000 points, each destroyed Robohead gives 5,000 points and after clearing the whole boss the player receives 1,000,000 points.[2]
  • Unlike the other rooms in the level, the drain plugs in the Roboiler's room do not open again after they have been closed.
