I been think'n ya know... This Lyric business is like a tornado takin' on a dingy. Makes a sailor think about the important things in life...

— Salty, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Salty is a character from the Sonic Boom series that appears in the Sonic Boom franchise. He is an old anthropomorphic hippopotamus and an overconfident sailor with the self-proclaimed title of "captain of the ocean."[1] On land, he works as a bouncer and doorman for hire.

Appearance

Salty is a heavyset and burly humanoid hippopotamus over a head taller than Knuckles and possesses a fairly round torso, long muzzle with two small nostril on top, flat teeth and a short tail. He has completely light blue skin, except around his muzzle which is darker due to stubbles, and has white mutton chops. For attire, he wears a black beret, a grey vest and fingerless gloves, and short umber shoes with white soles. On each arm, he also has a red mermaid tattoo.

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Salty wore a black captain hat with a dark blue band, a red life-jacket, pink-colored fingering gloves, and a black bandage around his belly.

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Salty was raised alongside his brother Pepper by their father to be sailors. When their father left them a nautical compass, Salty took it for himself, creating a hostile and large rift between them. From there, they would occasionally battle each other on the open sea.[1] At some point, he sent Pepper to Crater Lake, but eventually forgot where he was.

Salty eventually acquired a residence at Cliff's Excavation Site where he kept his own personal boat, the Riptide, though it would not work since it lacked parts. There, he met Team Sonic, who needed a boat to reach the Pit. While Salty did not want to sell his Riptide, he would let them borrow it, if they could fix it. Team Sonic agreed to the deal and soon had the boat repaired. Keeping his promise, Salty wished the crew a safe journey.

Afterwards, Salty returned to Bygone Island where the looming threat from Lyric made him think about the important things in his life, including Pepper. Salty decided to make amends with his brother, but had no idea where he was. Fortunately, Salty met Team Sonic again when they came to the island, where he told them what he had been up to and asked them to help find Pepper, which Sonic agreed to. When Pepper returned, who had also decided to forget the past, the two brothers would reminisce about their mother until Team Sonic arrived. As a reward for their help, the brothers gave them a Power Glyph.

At some point, Salty took up the job as the bouncer for Justin Beaver and his producer, Dixon. Accompanying the duo, Salty denied Sonic, Tails and Knuckles an informal meeting with Dixon. When Salty met the trio later on though, they convinced him they were Justin's opening act, the Dreamboat Express. Salty thus allowed the group access backstage on two occasions.[2] Salty would afterwards find work as a night club bouncer. During Knuckles' time as a celebrity, he let the famous echidna and his associates have the privilege of cutting in front of his night club's line.[3]

Season two

Salty's next job saw him becoming a doorman for Meh Burger's secretive VIP room.[4] He later became a guard/doorman at the "Muckfoot Museum" where his job was to safeguard Tails' photograph of Muckfoot.[5] When Hedgehog Village then got overrun by malware-infected robots, Salty was inspired by Knuckles to help Team Sonic and the villagers fight the robots. Ultimately, the Village prevailed when the robots withdrew.[6]

Personality

Salty is overly confident in his domain and does not care to take the opinions of others around him into consideration. His egocentric attitude is apparent, even though his words and actions are not always justified. He is also very stubborn and inflexible as it is either his way or the seaway to him.[1] Salty is also not much for telling people about his past. He has also been known to hold long-held grudges, as demonstrated by his relationship with his brother, but he eventually realized after much reflection that those were pointless.

While a gruff and dutiful worker, Salty is somewhat gullible, which makes him prone to unknowingly let his guard down.[2]

Relationships

Pepper

For most of his life, Salty had an estranged relationship with his brother Pepper. When they were raised by their father, Salty never respected his brother. After Salty took their father's compass, their relationship was strained to the point where they would not speak with each other and had hostile confrontation.[1]

When the danger of Lyric was present, Salty reconsidered his relationship with Pepper and realized that despite it all, Pepper was an important and dear person to him. As such, he came to miss him a great deal and abandoned their feud to reconnect with him. Once he found him, Salty reunited with his brother on good terms.
