The setting for Scrap Brain is based of the outside environment in the zone with the same name in the original Sonic the Hedgheog. The area encompassing Scrap Brain is a metallized field adorned with pipelines and high-tech complexes, and the sky in itself is gray and overcast, presumably by pollution. Additionally, there is a high-tech metropolis with high towers and red lights, blocky manufactories with pipelines (some of which are crumbling) and tall antennae covering almost the entire background.
The racing tracks through Scrap Brain are mainly colored in alternating blue and electric horizontal stripes with similarly colored rose and white edges. On the sides of the tracks there are also occasionally cone-shaped metallic structures.
In Scrap Brain, the objective for the player is to race along the laid-out asphalted racetrack against other racers for a top position in the race. Racing outside the border of the asphalt track will cause the player to lose speed immediately. Additionally, the cone-shaped structures outside of the racetracks will cause the playable characters to come to an immediately stop and lose a Ring if they collide with them.
In Star Light, the player races on a circular racing track encompassing the entire map. The layout of the racing track in Scrap Brain depends on which circuit in the Chaos GP the player chooses. Additionally, each racing track is littered with different power-ups and objects that the player can utilize. On each of the layouts for the Scrap Brain racecourse, the player's object is to complete three laps of the racetrack.
