Ensnares targets in a laser grid with drones.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Sentry Bug[1][note 1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, insect-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

The Sentry Bugs have butterfly-like, dark green bodies. They have a yellow seam running down the middle of their abdomens with black square-like designs along the side of their bodies. They also have two yellow spikes at either side of their heads and what appears to be a red spike running down their backs. They also have two propellers as wings.

Overview[]

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Sentry Bugs appear as enemies in both Acts of Titanic Monarch Zone. In gameplay, they hover around a certain point. Once the player get close to a Sentry Bug however, it will send out six flying orbs that will follow the player around while forming a 3D polygonal laser grid around them. This grid will then close in around the playable character for a few seconds; once the grid is at the size of the character, the explosives will damage the player. If the player gets too far away from the Sentry Bug however, its explosives will deactivate.

A simple Spin Attack will be enough to defeat this Badnik. Upon their destruction, they release an Animal and award 100 points. Destroying the Badnik will also deactivate its explosives.

Powers and abilities[]

With the aid of their propellers, the Sentry Bugs are capable of flight. They can also deploy orb-shaped flying explosives that are able to work in coordination with each other by first encircling their target and then closing in on it from all angles for an unavoidable assault strike.
