I am Shadow the Hedgehog. I am the union of ideals dark and benign but ultimately built in the name of love. I am the Ultimate Lifeform. I am the protector of Mobius. Run home to your master and tell him. This is who I am.

— Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog #171

Shadow the Hedgehog (created day 225, 3186) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He was the end result of Project Shadow, a project to create the Ultimate Lifeform. Created by Professor Gerald in his efforts to find a cure to a rare disease known as NIDS that was affecting his granddaughter Maria, Shadow was gifted with the powers of the alien Black Doom through that entity's blood. After the project was forcibly shut down by the government, Shadow was put into stasis for 50 years and then awakened by Dr. Eggman, Gerald's grandson, to help him take over Mobius. Shadow sought instead to destroy the world to avenge Maria, who had been killed by the raid on Space Colony ARK where they had both lived. However, Sonic and Rouge were able to convince Shadow that Maria would not have wanted such a result, and Shadow joined forces with Sonic to save the planet. Saved by the Bem, he would return to join with Sonic and others against the evil Xorda. He would eventually rejoin Eggman, only to turn against him and join the special forces of the United Federation after learning the true purpose Gerald created him for.

Appearance[]

Shadow is a black-furred mobian hedgehog. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, a black nose, a tan muzzle, and small, triangular ears with tan canals. He also has six quills on his head, four of which curve upwards while the other two curve downwards, two spines on his back, and a short, pointy tail. He has red stripes on each of his head quills, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs.

For attire, Shadow wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tongues, and rocket-skates which, like his gloves, have black cuffs and red tongues. Shadow also wears Inhibitor Rings, one on each of his wrists and ankles.

History[]

Shadow stasis

Shadow in stasis, from Sonic the Hedgehog #145.

Shadow was created on the Space Colony ARK by Professor Gerald as part of Project Shadow. The project had been commissioned by the president of the time as a means of creating immortality via an "Ultimate Lifeform"; Gerald, however, saw the research as a potential means of curing Neuro-Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, a disease from which his granddaughter Maria suffered. Failing to develop a successful Ultimate Lifeform on his own, he turned to the alien Black Doom, leader of the species known as the Black Arms The contribution of Black Doom's own DNA helped in the process of creating the being known as Shadow, who was immortal, immune to disease and, thanks to Doom, highly attune to Chaos powers. However, Gerald learned of Black Doom's malicious intentions for Mobius - the alien planned to use Shadow as an agent in ushering in his eventual conquest of the planet. Gerald instead planned to make Shadow the planet's greatest protector should the Black Arms ever return.[1][2]

However, tragedy struck soon afterwards, as G.U.N. soldiers raided the ARK, seeking to apprehend the Ultimate Lifeform and destroy all knowledge of the project. Sadly, like Black Doom, GUN saw the project as a potential weapon, but hoped to turn it to their own ends. While they were attempting to escape the space colony, Maria was fatally shot by a soldier before Shadow's eyes. The pod in which Shadow was ejected was recovered by the military and he was placed into stasis. Gerald was arrested, but when he learned of Maria's death, he was driven insane, desiring the destruction of the planet in revenge. As he was uncooperative, he was eventually executed, but not before planting the seeds to enable his vengeance in the future. When Shadow awoke decades later, he did not remember any of his original purpose, only a desire to avenge Maria, due to Gerald altering his memories.[1][3]

Awakening and "Death"[]

SilverSonic2 03

Shadow fighting Silver Sonic v2.0, from Sonic the Hedgehog #98.

When Shadow was awakened from stasis fifty years later, it was thanks to Gerald's grandson's alternate counterpart, Dr. Eggman. Coveting Shadow's power so that he could take over the world, Eggman enlisted Shadow's aid in acquiring the Chaos Emeralds. Shadow proceeded to steal Station Square's Chaos Emerald, after facing off against the city's protector, Silver Sonic v2.0. Due to his similar appearance to Sonic, Station Square's army believed the theft to have been Sonic the Hedgehog, and thus sent their military after him instead.[4]

Shadow was later confronted by Sonic on Prison Island during his mission to steal six Chaos Emeralds with the assistance of Rouge the Bat. While he and Sonic fought in the forest, Eggman informed Shadow that he had set charges on the island and it was about to explode. Rouge then called in saying that she was trapped in the vault where the Chaos Emeralds where being held. Eggman merely told Shadow to meet him at the rendezvous point after the explosion, saying that they would dig the emeralds out of the ashes later. Sonic, overhearing this, proposed a temporary truce with Shadow in order to save Rouge. The two were successful in finding Rouge - with the emeralds - and Shadow teleported them all off of the island to Eggman's pyramid base using Chaos Control. Shadow then teleported away with the emeralds, leaving the two in the desert. Sonic and Rouge, realizing the danger of Eggman taking the emeralds aboard the ARK, broke into the base and stole a shuttle. Sonic eventually confronted Shadow, who planned to use the emeralds to activate the Eclipse Cannon as per Gerald's revenge.[5]

SU2 Battle

Shadow battling Sonic, from Sonic Universe #2.

Just after Shadow landed a Chaos Spear attack on Sonic, Rouge informed him via intercom that she'd found a video she believed Shadow needed to see. Thanks to the video, Shadow realized that he had been misled by false memories, and that Maria would have not wanted the planet destroyed. Shadow and Sonic went to recover the emeralds and found them in a shrine within the ARK; however, they were guarded by the failed Ultimate Lifeform Prototype, which would not allow Gerald's plans to go astray. The monster merged itself with the ARK's Eclipse Cannon using Chaos Control in order to crash the entire structure into the planet itself; in response, the two hedgehogs used the emeralds to transform into Super Sonic and Super Shadow. After they defeated the beast, they used Chaos Control to send the ARK back into orbit; Shadow, however, was so exhausted that he began to fall into space, seemingly lost.[3][5]

Return and Interactions With the Freedom Fighters[]

Fightxorda125

Shadow during the counter-attack against the Xorda, from Sonic the Hedgehog #125.

Shadow was believed to have been killed, though in actuality he was saved by the benevolent Bem as they investigated Mobius from orbit. Upon awakening, the Bem transformed Shadow into his super form to combat the arriving Xorda warship while they made their escape. Despite his powers, the Xorda ship managed to shoot down the Ultimate Lifeform, hurling him into Mobius' gravitational pull. After landing on the planet's surface, Shadow was discovered by the Knothole Freedom Fighters and formed a temporary alliance with them. Together, they learned that the Xorda were intent on destroying Mobius for crimes committed by its inhabitants made back when the planet was known as Earth. Together with a veritable army of other Mobians, Shadow charged the Xorda Quantum Dial weapon, seeking to destroy it before it wiped out Mobius. Thanks to the efforts of Sonic, who seemingly imitated Shadow in sacrificing his life, the weapon was destroyed.[6][7]

Shadow spent the time of Sonic's absence searching for meaning in his life (although Bunnie Rabbot mentioned that he spent little time with the Freedom Fighters), eventually confronting Dr. Eggman with the intention of killing him. Eggman escaped though, and Shadow was forced to retreat.[8][9] Shadow then found himself drawn to Hope Kintobor, Eggman's niece and a girl who reminded Shadow strangely of Maria. While watching over her, Shadow was abducted by Locke, the father of Knuckles the Echidna, who believed that Shadow's strange nature (somehow alive despite being neither animal, vegetable, or mineral) could somehow help him to locate his missing family, the members of the Brotherhood of Guardians. Not taking kindly to Locke's interrogations, then suffering from a flashback, Shadow attacked him, only to be halted in his vengeance by Hope, who had been pulled along as Locke teleported Shadow to a hidden location.[10]

Wandering once more, Shadow found a hidden laboratory that had existed since before the Xorda attack on Earth, meeting a robot named Isaac with detailed knowledge of Mobius' history. The two eventually became involved in a three way battle with Sonic and a new Metal Sonic built by Dr. Eggman.[11][12][13] When the trio discovered that the base harbored an ancient and powerful missile, Shadow aided Sonic in preventing the missile from launching. Shadow assisted in getting Sonic to safety after Sonic's ankle was wounded, then disappearing once again.[14]

Allegiance to Eggman[]

With the battle ended, Shadow went out on his own once more, eventually locating Gerald's lost diary. However, Shadow was once again engaged by Metal Sonic, the two being rendered unconscious during the ensuing battle and brought back to Eggman by Mecha.[15] Once in Eggman's presence, the mad-scientist was able to convince Shadow to work with him by informing Shadow that Maria was his half-sister.[16]

When A.D.A.M. secretly seized control of Knothole's Metal Sonic Troopers and directed them to attack first Eggman and then their creators, Shadow joined Sonic, the Freedom Fighters, and the Chaotix in resisting the enemy. Hope was harmed during this conflict as she lived in Knothole, and Shadow became motivated by fury over her coming to harm. Using his link to the Chaos Force, he defeated the Troopers with Chaos Control, intriguing Knuckles in the process. Grateful for Sonic helping Hope, Shadow chose not to antagonize him but instead departed, returning to Eggman.[16][17]

Bean beaten

In a show of goodwill, Shadow handles Bean on Sonic's birthday, from Sonic the Hedgehog #160.

He would later return on Sonic's birthday to express his thanks, joining in battle with him against Scourge the Hedgehog and Croctobot. Then later, Croctobot threatened to tell Eggman of Shadow's treachery, but all three Hedgehogs put aside their rivalry to destroy the robot together. Shadow and Sonic found themselves initially outmatched by Scourge, who left with Rouge the Bat in tow as the Freedom Fighters arrived to back up his enemies. Shadow pursued them, but they escaped with the assistance of an Echidna mad scientist named Dr. Finitevus.[18][19]

A.D.A.M. would later divert Shadow's attention by releasing Mammoth Mogul and Ixis Naugus-both of them recently taken prisoner by Eggman in the Egg Grape Chamber-and forcing Eggman to dispatch Shadow after them. Shadow was then lured into a trap by A.D.A.M., who used his abilities in conjunction with Tails's to summon all the Chaos Emeralds from across the universe to Mobius.[20] While Sonic faced A.D.A.M., Shadow- in Super form- joined with Turbo Tails to send all the gathered Chaos Emeralds to the Zone of Silence, getting them out of reach of both A.D.A.M. and Eggman.[21]

Shadow would then depart with Eggman, but soon their alliance would end. After taking Professor Gerald's diary from Eggman and yanking out his nephew Snively's hairs in the process, Shadow sought the Freedom Fighters for help deciphering it, only to have it damaged on his way to Knothole. Taken into the disk by Nicole, the artificial intelligence member of the Freedom Fighters, and the use of a Particle-To-Light Organizer and Transporter Device, Shadow made contact with virtual duplicates of Gerald and Maria and learned of his purpose in fighting Black Doom. Afterwards, Shadow went his own way, leaving Eggman behind to prepare for his eventual destiny.[2]

Agent of G.U.N.[]

Not long after his desertion of Eggman, Shadow joined the special forces of the United Federation along with Rouge the Bat. Having made this decision with the knowledge that GUN had resources that would help him in his fight, he was pleasantly surprised to find the organization far departed from the one that had long ago invaded Space Colony ARK.[3] Responding to a distress call from New Mobotropolis, the city to which the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Acorn relocated after Knothole was destroyed. They had come under assault from Enerjak, a brainwashed Knuckles with the power of the Master Emerald infused within him by Dr. Finitevus. With his typical confidence, Shadow confronted Enerjak in a battle of Chaos powers, but soon realized that he had met his match. Removing his inhibitor rings to boost his power, he attacked Enerjak with increased strength, but soon burned himself out without much success against the super-powered Echidna. Shadow and the rest of the people of New Mobotropolis were only saved by the arrival of the Egg Fleet, which hit Enerjak with teleportation beams to send him to New Megaopolis to have his power drained. Shadow, his obligation fulfilled, departed to return to the United Federation.[22]

Mobius and Beyond[]

Following this, Shadow was tasked with retrieving a Chaos Emerald by G.U.N. commander Abraham Tower, with whom he shared a tense but mutual respect. Using Hope Kintobor's Zone-Breaching Platform, Shadow was supposed to have been transported to the Special Zone, but instead ended up in Moebius during a major battle between King Scourge, and Sonic, Amy Rose, Rob O' the Hedge, Silver the Hedgehog, Metal Sonic and Rosy the Rascal. Sonic asked for Shadow's help to get rid of Metal Sonic. Shadow used his Chaos Control, combined with Metal Sonic's special zone-hopping engine, to transport himself and the robot away.[23][24] Arriving in an alternate reality, the Sonic of that Zone explained the differences between their worlds and offered Shadow a chance to stay in their universe, Shadow declined, feeling his duty was to defend his own world. Following this he once again transported himself and Metal Sonic to a different universe once again.[25]

Are they making eyes?

Shadow shaking hands with Blaze, from Sonic Universe #1.

Shadow and Metal Sonic then ended up in the Sol Zone, floating above an ocean. Shadow tried to convince Metal Sonic to no longer obey Dr. Eggman, but the machine completely ignored Shadow's words and kicked him into the water before flying off to look for the zone's version of Eggman. Shadow struggled to keep himself from drowning just as the Ocean Tornado arrived with Blaze the Cat and Marine the Raccoon aboard. The two got Shadow aboard the ship and introduced themselves. The trio soon found out that Metal Sonic was attacking Southern Island, looking for Eggman. Blaze furiously attacked Metal Sonic, but it used Marine as a shield to defend against Blaze and Shadow. Neither Shadow, Blaze or Marine could take down Metal Sonic. However, Shadow tried to convince Metal Sonic to work with him, but Metal Sonic declined, saying his objective was to serve Eggman while Shadow's was to defend Mobius, and thus he must destroy Shadow. Nevertheless, Blaze set fire to Metal Sonic, and Shadow charged at him using a spin dash. The damaged robot flew towards the Ocean Tornado, and Marine blasted Metal Sonic with a ship's cannon, destroying it. Blaze then gave Shadow the green Chaos Emerald and he used it to return to Mobius Prime. Shadow arrived at G.U.N. HQ, where Hope Kintobor and Commander Tower were waiting. Shadow delivered the Emerald, and was informed he had a new mission.[26]

The Doom Laser and Search for Gamma[]

Following his mission's completion, Shadow was sent with Rouge the Bat to disable one of Dr. Eggman's devastating weapons, the Doom Laser, which was capable of blasting through the Knothole Freedom Fighter's shield and obliterate them and their camp on the outskirts of New Megaopolis, along with half the Eggdome. Shadow recruited the help of Sonic who was sleeping outside the Eggdome along with the others for the final battle. Sonic questioned why Eggman would build something so over the top, to which Shadow replied that intelligence suggests Eggman is losing his last grasp on reality. Sonic disagreed, citing that Eggman hasn't stooped that far yet. The trio tried to disable the Doom Laser, but accidentally shifted it into firing position. Shadow then took off his inhibitor rings and used his Chaos Control to stop the laser. He accidentally fell off the laser, but Sonic grabbed his hand, saying they're not going to have a repeat of Shadow falling to his death. Sonic then questioned if Shadow was going to join the final battle against Eggman, to which Shadow replied he owes Sonic much gratitude and the least he could do is allow Sonic to settle things with the doctor himself. As Sonic left, Rogue remarked at how much their relationship had developed to which Shadow stated, with a smile, he respected Sonic and that was it.[5]

SonicUniverse3ShadowOmegaSpear

Shadow coming towards Omega with a Chaos Spear at the ready, from Sonic Universe #2.

Shadow was later assigned on another mission by Commander Tower into the mountains to locate E-102 Gamma and offer him asylum by giving him a position at G.U.N. Shadow accepted to go on the mission alone after he failed to save Metal Sonic in Blaze's world. However, E-123 Omega was dispatched to find E-102 just as Shadow left to find him in a G.U.N. helicopter. After some less-than-polite conversation with the helicopter pilot, Shadow dropped from the G.U.N. helicopter into the mountains where Gamma was thought to be. Shadow quickly found robotic footprints in the snow and commented to himself that the supposedly-elite robot did a terrible job of covering its tracks, but in reality, Gamma was lying in wait and targets Shadow, but quickly recognizes him as a friend due to Eggman's files. Shadow then convinced E-102 to come with him to join G.U.N. However, Omega arrived on the scene and began attacking, sending Shadow flying over the tree tops. By the time Shadow got to where Omega and Gamma were, the latter had been destroyed.[27]

After the E-102 programming within Omega explained what it had done, Shadow convinced Omega to join G.U.N. in Gamma's place. Omega accepted the offer, and the two returned to G.U.N. HQ. While in the HQ's recreation room, Shadow listened to Hope and Rouge brag about Omega's power. Shadow was less than pleased however, stating that while Commander Tower considered Omega a fine alternative to Gamma, he was disappointed he'd let two living weapons die. Rouge then teased Shadow about him moping and explained they had a new mission; to use Hope's now-working Zone-Breaching Platform to go to the Special Zone and obtain another Chaos Emerald.[27]

Member of Team Dark[]

Teamdarkarchie

Team Dark assembled, from Sonic Universe #4.

Later Shadow went with Rouge to get another Chaos Emerald in the Special Zone but encountered the zone's master, Feist there. Feist challenged the two to get to the emerald at the end of an obstacle course, in which the duo ultimately failed in the last second. The two were then sent back and questioned by Commander Tower of their failure in which Shadow took the blame. Afterwards during the training combat sequence with Omega, Shadow got angry after Omega unintentionally bragged on Shadow's defeat in which Shadow knocked Omega down leaving Omega clueless. Shadow went to clear his head in which Hope came and offered Shadow support and a hug which boosted Shadow's confidence level. Now Shadow and Rouge got ready to go to the Special Zone again but this time they went with Omega under the name Team Dark. Feist cooked up another challenge in which they had to find the emerald again in a given time in a cube-shaped maze. Each member proved their value as Rouge saved Shadow from falling into a bed of spikes and Shadow using his speed to search different ways for the emerald. The trio found the Chaos Emerald but Feist covered the emerald in gems to keep them from getting it. Team Dark blasted the gems while Shadow made it to the emerald, but ran out of time in which Feist taunted the team. Rouge instructed for Omega to go ahead and attack Feist in which Omega attacked him with delight as Rouge and Shadow stole the Chaos Emerald. Before leaving, Shadow told Feist "Deny me all you want, but with this even a god must bow to the Ultimate Lifeform." The words angered Feist and Team Dark used Chaos Control to get away. The team then handed Commander Tower the emerald with cheers on their faces.[28]

Treasure Team Tango and Scrambled[]

TroubledShadow

Shadow hesitates in the face of Blaze's accusations, from Sonic Universe #22.

Shadow and Omega were later called upon to assist their teammate, Rouge, in locating the source of a mysterious energy reading; namely, a Sol Emerald. The emerald was difficult to track due to irregularities in their readings and Rouge eventually stumbled across Amy Rose, Cream the Rabbit, Blaze the Cat and Nicole in her hand-held form. The two power members of Team Dark then tailed Rouge as she earned the trust of the others searching for the Sol Emerald, ready to assist when she needed back-up. That moment came right after Rouge stole the Sol Emerald and got herself cornered by Blaze. Omega and Shadow blasted through the ceiling of a root cavern to land behind Rouge, who warned the girls to stay back or else the robot and hedgehog would strike.[29]

Despite Rouge's threats, Blaze coldly addressed Shadow, saying he should know that she needed the Sol Emeralds and asking him if this was how he would repay her generosity (as, when they had previously met, she had given him a Chaos Emerald in order to return home). To the surprise of his team, Shadow hesitated and averted his eyes, replying, "That was then. This is now." Rouge then ordered Omega to open fire, scattering their opposition, but Blaze created a wall of flame, rendering the barrage completely ineffective. Shadow, incredulous, asked Rouge if she had lost her mind and the two were caught by surprise when Blaze enveloped Omega in a spiral of flame. A fight over the emerald then broke out and while Shadow had it for a moment, he lost it when struck by Amy's Piko Piko Hammer. After Cheese escaped with the blue emerald, Rouge stole Blaze's gray one, which Shadow attempted to use Chaos Control on and warp his team away. Instead, he was taken aback and left dazed when the jewel erupted into a raging inferno that enveloped Team Dark while the girls fled. When he and the others recovered and went in pursuit of Team Rose, Shadow faced off against Amy again and not only knocked her hammer out of her grip, but then used it to knock her out as well. After bringing their prisoners together, Shadow heard Cream say that Team Hooligan actually had the emerald while he tried to keep Amy and Blaze from getting up, only to back away when the Sol princess used her fire powers again, reiterating her world's dire situation.[30]

While Rouge tired to decide on a course of action, Shadow attempted to placate Blaze, who remained angry with him. Amy eventually took charge of the situation, and got them to work together and track Team Hooligan before the trail got cold. When Shadow went to get transport for them, Amy followed and asked how he knew Blaze and upon hearing his explanation, confronted him over his duty as a protector of Mobius and whether or not it extended to other worlds as well. While Shadow dodged her questions, saying he would do what he had to, Amy remained confident he would do the right thing in the end. Eventually they traveled via Shadow's bike, which Amy found amusing that Shadow had when he was as fast as Sonic. Shadow explained it was G.U.N. protocol for each squad to have a transport, but a teasing comment from Rouge about how he painted and maintained it forced him to admit he was quite fond of the bike. While Blaze ran ahead to burn clear terrain for it to travel upon, Shadow went after her. He tried to approach Blaze, wanting to explain his actions, though she remained cold towards him. When he said that his mission came first, and that if he had to fight her, he would do so without hesitation, she snapped back at him, asking why then he was trying so hard to apologize. As he looked doubtful, she left him behind. When Blaze collapsed from sudden pain later on, Shadow rushed to her side, worried that something had happened to her. Upon hearing that she was fine and could now pinpoint the Emerald's location, Amy ordered Shadow to carry Blaze for the time being while resuming their pursuit, causing an exchange of awkward glances between them. The two groups eventually caught up to Team Hooligan, only to find them now fighting the Babylon Rogues for the Emerald as well. Shadow was not pleased upon hearing Rouge's willingness to betray the girls again and take the jewel for themselves, but he went quiet when Rouge insisted they had a mission to do and followed her into the four-way brawl.[31]

During the melee, Amy made her way to Shadow and cornered him into deciding whether he would just keep doing whatever G.U.N. told him to do, or do what was right. Shadow again suffered a moment of doubt, but when Jet and his team attempted to leave with the stolen Sol Emerald, he gave chase and teleported atop the hawk's Extreme Gear, kicking him to the ground. He recovered the Sol Emerald, only to lose it again in the fracas moments later. When Rouge finally agreed to work with Amy's team once more, Shadow found himself using his Chaos Control technique to herd Jet into a clearing with the other members of Teams Hooligan and Babylon who retreated after Blaze re-ignited one of Bean's bombs, causing it to explode on both groups. With the fight over, Rouge made another move for the Emerald, but Shadow stopped her, stating G.U.N. owed Blaze for the green Chaos Emerald and moreover, the fate of her world outweighed their mission. Holding his ground, Shadow further stated that if Rouge would not walk away, he would make her with Omega taking his side. As they parted ways with Team Rose, Rouge snidely asked Shadow what they were going to tell the Commander, and he simply replied that, as the cunning spy, he was sure she would think of something.[32]

Later, Shadow and Rouge would be ordered to protect the President when Dr. Eggman attacked Central City.[33]

Worlds Collide[]

Due to Eggman and Wily rewriting the history of Shadow's world, Shadow's history and memories were changed to be nearly identical to that of his game counterpart's.

Some time later, after Mobius had been reset by the second Genesis Wave, Shadow was somehow captured by Doctor Eggman and his new partner Dr. Wily, and was turned into the Roboticized Master, Shadow Man. He was sent with his fellow Roboticized Masters, Tails Man, Knuckles Man and Rose Woman to steal a Chaos Emerald from the Mega City Bank in Dr. Wily's world, where the group was immediately confronted by Proto Man.[34] However, Shadow Man's teammates quickly overpowered him before Mega Man joined the battle. After a brief skirmish-which featured Shadow Man being stunned by Mega Man's Mega Buster and the intervention of Metal Sonic-the group traveled to Sonic's World through a Warp Ring. Pursued by Mega Man, they split up, with Shadow Man returning to the Wily Egg with Knuckles Man and Rose Woman in the Skull Egg Zone.[35][36] Their task of collecting the Chaos Emeralds completed, Shadow Man and the other Masters-which included Vector Man, Charmy Man, Espio Man, Silver Man, and Blaze Woman-were sent by the doctors to attack Sonic and Mega Man, who had joined forces.[37]

Shadow beats Shadow Man

Humiliated and enraged, Shadow finishes off Shadow Man, from "Mega Man #26.

The battle between the Robians and the heroes was interrupted as Proto Man broke away from the fight to locate Dr. Light deeper in the Skull Egg Zone. Shadow Man and four of his fellow Masters were sent to pursue him, leaving the Chaotix to deal with the other heroes. After the three were restored to normal, the evil doctors recalled Shadow Man from the hunt and decided to send him against the heroes, aided by another Shadow Man-one of Wily's Robot Masters.[38] The pair proved a formidable challenge to the heroes, but Mega Man managed to restore Shadow, who out of rage at his humiliation destroyed his one-time partner. Still sore over his capture, he declined Sonic's invitation to either join them or meet up with Proto Man and the Chaotix, and teleported away using Chaos Control. In the process, he awoke Mega Man, Sonic, and Tails' memories of the unaltered realities, and also disrupted the Skull Egg Zone.[39] Shortly thereafter, the restored Amy and Sonic set out to find him in order to have him join their alliance against the doctors.[40][41]

In the interlude, Shadow met up with Omega, who had accompanied Rouge into the zone to look for him after his capture. Upon arriving at the heroes' meeting point beneath the halted Wily Egg, Shadow learned of Rouge's fate: she had been captured and transformed into the Roboticized Master Rouge Woman. Shadow joined the battle and was attacked by Napalm Man, only to be saved by Omega. Omega claimed that Rouge had been foolish to leave him behind to guard their return portal, but Shadow suggested he take the matter up with her once she was rescued. Sonic proved an irritant to Shadow as usual during the fight, claiming that he had "teleported off in a huff", complimenting him for finding Omega, and assuring him that they would rescue Rouge. Shadow ended up racing Top Man, only for him to be crushed as Sonic rammed Hard Man into him, much to Shadow's annoyance. Sonic then left him to contend with Clown Man, after which Shadow noticed Rouge Woman and expressed his wish that she hadn't come to find him. He was then set upon by Shade Man, but eventually met up with Proto Man and came up with a new strategy. Realizing that the battle with the Robot Masters was keeping them from getting at the doctors, they convinced Sonic and Mega Man to board the Wily Egg with Tails and Rush while the rest of them held off the army. The blue heroes reluctantly agreed, but as they were heading towards the Wily Egg, Mega Man's kidnapped creator Dr. Light was dropped from the battleship.[41]

Shadow Saves Light

Shadow saves Dr. Light, from Mega Man #27.

As Dr. Light fell to his intended death, Shadow used Chaos Control to teleport in to grab him and bring him to safety.[42] Despite the fact that Rouge (who had been de-roboticized by Mega Man earlier) and Dr. Light were now fighting with them, the exhausted heroes (now joined by Tails and Rush after the former was injured aboard the Wily Egg) eventually found themselves surrounded by the Robot Masters.[43] Luckily, help arrived in the form of the original Robot Masters from Light Labs, allowing Knuckles, Proto Man, Dr. Light, and Rush to board the Wily Egg and rescue Mega Man and Sonic, who had been captured by Eggman and Wily. Shadow then watched with the others as the blue heroes defeated the doctors and used Chaos Control to restore their worlds, but Dr. Eggman interrupted Sonic's attempt, resulting in their respective multiverse undergoing a massive change.[44]

Note: From this point, Shadow's history continues from his new life in the altered timeline.

Personality[]

Shadow is arrogant, determined, and somewhat cold. He often comes off as blunt and uncaring and does not take kindly to outside interference, preferring to believe himself capable of handling most things on his own. He lacks many of Sonic's inhibitions, being perfectly willing to eliminate a foe rather than merely subduing them, and he often believes that the ends justify the means. Because of this, he is often very destructive in battle. Still, he does have a personal sense of honor, enough to leave the Freedom Fighters in peace on some occasions despite his alliance with Eggman. At times he has behaved with almost a mercenary attitude, joining forces with others only to further his own goals, but in the end he usually ends up picking the side of moral right. When Shadow has a goal, he sticks to it with grim determination and intense focus, not resting until it is fulfilled. He has high expectations for himself, and takes personal failure especially hard. He has little patience for silly behavior. While others often tease him about his seemingly brooding attitude, he is capable of subtle compassion.

After discovering his true purpose - that Gerald intended him to be a protector of the planet - Shadow has become much more heroic and wants to turn other "living weapons" like him (such as Metal Sonic) to the side of good instead of destroying them. While not always friendly, he has opened up somewhat to others, though he does not readily admit it because of his own pride. For all his moodiness and self-confidence, he is more accepting of outside help and working as part of a team. While he still misses Maria, he holds her memory in high esteem and no longer obsesses over his past.

Powers and abilities[]

Thanks to the natural speed bestowed unto him and his footwear, Shadow is capable of many of the same moves as his near doppelganger, including Sonic's patented Spin Dash. Shadow also commands Chaos powers through a direct link to the Chaos Force, which unlike that of the Brotherhood of Guardians does not require tapping into the energies of the Master Emerald or a Chaos Emerald. It is notable, however, that Shadow's abilities are more potent when aided by an emerald. Shadow can utilize these powers in a variety of ways, most commonly in the form of attacks such as Chaos Spear and Chaos Blast, or in time-freezing and teleportation moves such as Chaos Control. With a Chaos Emerald(s), he can increase the power of these abilities as well. Despite his power, Shadow has his limits, and does not possess the same level of energy as Knuckles achieved when he became Chaos Knuckles. As the Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow is also thought to be ageless and immune to disease.

Equipment[]

Shadow wears a pair of specialized shoes called rocket-skates. These footwear are the primary source of Shadow's speed, producing small jet streams that lets him hover-skate at speeds nearing Sonic's.[3] Alternatively, Shadow can use his rocket skates to briefly hover or assist his jumps as well as on-ground movements.

Shadow wears two Inhibitor Rings on his wrists that limits his Chaos energy intake, keeping it in check.[3][45] By removing them, Shadow is able to use his full power, turning him into a nigh-unstoppable force.

Transformations[]

Chaos Shadow[]

Shadow can temporarily increase his powers by removing his Inhibitor Rings and taking the form of Chaos Shadow. After the excess energy wears off however, he is left weakened.

Super Shadow[]

Like Sonic, he can attain a Super form, named Super Shadow, by using the power of the Chaos Emeralds. In this form, his innate talents are greatly enhanced and he possesses virtual invulnerability and flight.

Relationships[]

Maria Robotnik[]

Rouge the Bat[]

Although Shadow himself has shown no genuine romantic feelings towards anyone, Rouge the Bat has repeatedly flirted with Shadow on various occasions, and has even called him "handsome" from time to time. She has shown interest in him as far back as after he saved her life on Prison Island, but Shadow said it was only to get the Chaos Emeralds she'd stolen and nothing more. Even though Shadow does not show much emotion, he has often smiled around Rouge, implying how close she is to him. Rouge also tends to tease Shadow on occasion by saying he mopes a lot.

Hope Kintobor[]

Hope hugging Shadow

Shadow being hugged by Hope, from Sonic Universe #4.

The relationship between Shadow and Hope was marked by a slight confusion on the part of the black hedgehog for confusing the young girl with Maria, his deceased and great friend at first sight, Shadow monitored her for weeks and followed her through the forest until he was discovered and confronted with the hard truth is that she is not her deceased friend she is not Maria, but she wants to be her friend Shadow moving away temporarily but returning to save her from the sordid plots of her uncle Eggman and his killer robot Metal Sonic who wanted to do her harm by kidnapping her , opening a teleport portal for Sonic with her chaos-linked power directly connected to the kingdom's hospital so she could receive treatment after the attack. After a series of tragic events Hope joins G.U.N. and gets very close to Team Dark by sharing their doubts, resentment and problems, Hope and Shadow are always in mutual support and looking out for each other, being probably currently the second most important person in their current life for both of them and it being a fact that few people to feel comfortable and in a certain way happy to have their coexistence from one to another, something that Shadow can no longer do with Maria, he does for Hope by protecting her.

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

Amy Rose[]

Amy Rose has shown to be somewhat fond of Shadow, having an unusual amount of faith in him when he seems to lack faith in himself. Being a somewhat equally willed person, she tends to help Shadow regain sight of his purpose, and keep him in check. More than once she has realized the good in him when others failed to.

Blaze the Cat[]

Blaze the Cat has been getting through to Shadow, though their relationship thus far seems to be more of a mutual respect than anything else. This is hinted at by the fact that he doesn't want to hurt her, he feels bad about betraying her team twice (in one day), and he can't stand having her mad with him and constantly tries to apologize.

Trivia[]

  • In the game universe, it was eventually revealed in his own game that Shadow had been saved at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 by one of Eggman's robots. Before this had been revealed, former writer Karl Bollers came up with the idea that the aliens, the Bem, were the rescuers so that Shadow, whose popularity had soared, could reappear in the comic.
  • The picture of Shadow on the cover of the issue titled, "Shadow Returns" looks similar to one of his promotional images for the game Shadow the Hedgehog, except the eyes are not as wide, and he does not have his handgun.
  • Shadow's chest fur was mistakenly colored gold for several issues instead of white.
  • Since his debut in the series, Shadow was the subject of artistic error. For example, Patrick Spaziante made Shadow's design similar to his model in the Sonic Adventure 2. Art Mawhinney's design of Shadow gave him shoes similar to Tails'. Ron Lim simplified Shadow's shoes with no black coloring. Occasionally, Shadow's shoes are sometimes drawn wrong in a certain way or miscolored.
  • Before Sonic the Hedgehog #182, Shadow's fur color was originally colored in different shades of dark gray color in several of his appearances. However, in Sonic the Hedgehog #182, he is fully inked to have the same black color as the inking.
  • Shadow the Hedgehog is also one of the few SEGA characters from the comics to have a biological family introduced in the video game continuity. In Shadow's case, he was created by Gerald Robotnik using the Black Arms' DNA.
  • Shadow is the one who starts up Team Dark but in Sonic Heroes, Rouge starts it up.
  • Shadow was the second heroic Sonic character besides the members of the Knothole Freedom Fighters to appear in promotional material for Worlds Unite, the first being Knuckles.
  • Shadow is the only one of the four hedgehogs from the games who is not a member of any Freedom Fighter groups.
  • There is an inconsistency on when Shadow was created. His creation date is day 225, 3186, but in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Sonic Comic Encyclopedia, Gerald and Maria's year of death is 3185.
