Shogaku Ninensei is a study magazine and manga anthology aimed at children in the second grade of Japanese elementary education (age 7-8). It is part of the series Shogakukan no Gakushuuzasshi, published by Shogakukan. Between 1992 and 1993, it featured stories from the Sonic the Hedgehog manga, based on the concept by Kenji Terada.

The April 1992 issue of the magazine included the very first Sonic story based on this concept, which was also the very first Sonic comic story not produced by Sega (the only previous comics having been the US promotional comic and the Japanese Sonic the Hedgehog Story Comic). It was written and illustrated by Sango Morimoto.

The first Sonic manga story in Shogaku Ninensei titled simply Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック·ザ·ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu?) has been written and illustrated by Sango Morimoto. This story appeared between pages 93 and 97 of the April 1992 issue.

Two young hedgehog students, Nikki and Eimi, are walking down a street when they are accosted by a large lizard bully named Anton Beruka. With a lascivious look, Anton kidnaps Eimi for a date. When Nikki tries to stop him, Anton pushes him into a tree and runs off. Nikki laments that he is a failure as a boy, and wishes he was stronger. Suddenly, he is struck by a strange power and transforms into Sonic the Hedgehog! He zooms off after Anton and Eimi.

Sonic easily catches up to Anton and whisks Eimi out of his clutches. Anton is angry, and attacks Sonic with a chain... however, by the time Anton whips Sonic with the chain, Sonic has already dashed out of the way and jumped onto a tree branch. Anton attacks with the chain again, but Sonic is too agile. Then Sonic headbutts Anton, knocking him out.

  • Nikki and Eimi wear sweaters with the letters 'N' (for Nikki) and 'E' (for Eimī) printed on the front. Anton wears a letterman jacket with a skull-and-crossbones on the back and a monogram on the left breast saying 'AB'.
  • A note in the margin on page 3 reveals that Nikki can transform into Sonic, but Nikki himself is not aware of this.
