The future's not all stone and buildings like that.
What's the future you came from like, Silver?
A lot brighter than this. The sky is blue, and everybody's got a smile.

Silver the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower, Sonic Colors (Nintendo DS)

Silver's future is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a timeline set approximately two hundred years into the future of Sonic's universe. While the future has had multiple residents across the series, including Eggman Nega and Blaze the Cat, it is currently primarily inhabited by Silver the Hedgehog.

Description[]

Basically, Silver's future is an alternate timeline that is set two hundred years into the future of Sonic's universe, but so far the only location that has been shown is the future earth. This future, however, is in constant flux due to the actions that happen in the present time; as such, there is no general description of the universe in this timeline. Nevertheless, locations from the present, such as Angel Island (renamed Onyx Island), are known to still exist in the future.

The future that appeared in the Solaris incident was a devastated dystopia created when Iblis was released from Princess Elise in the present. Almost all of the planet in this timeline was in ruins and ravaged by fire, and previously prosperous cities were desolated and devastated, with no signs of life and the unfortunate inhabitants having lost all hope for the situation to improve soon.[1] Due to the infernal flames brought upon by Iblis, the sky was permanently covered in smoke with little to no sunlight reaching the surface.

While not seen, later incarnations of Silver's future appeared to be in far better conditions. Accordingly, during the Onyx Island incident, the technology in this timeline was advanced enough to be able to create impressive devices such as cameras that turned objects into cards.[2] The future during the time of the Wisp incident was also portrayed in a positive light; according to Silver himself, the local people were always happy and the sky was always blue, suggesting a lack of pollution in this timeline.[3]

The future from the Ifrit incident, much like during the Solaris incident, was brought to ruin once again as Eggman Nega unleashed the Ifrit in the present to bring upon havoc and chaos. Despite being unseen, Silver compared the beast's home dimension, the Chaotic Inferno, to the timeline he hailed from, suggesting the future was turned once again into an infernal world.[4]

History[]

Games[]

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Iblis had devastated the planet for two centuries after the "Iblis Trigger" released him at the time of Princess Elise the Third's death because Sonic was not able to save her from a plane crash.[5] Despite many attempts to destroy Iblis, Silver and Blaze were unable to and as such went back through time to kill the "Iblis Trigger". The future was presumably changed for the worse when Mephiles the Dark fused with Iblis to become Solaris. However, when Elise and Sonic went back through time to extinguish the flame that would become Solaris, the future was changed yet again.

Sonic Rivals series[]

Sonic Rivals[]

In Sonic Rivals, Eggman Nega traveled to the present of Sonic's universe from the future armed with a camera that would turn objects into cards. His plan was to dispose of his ancestor, Dr. Eggman, to undo the doctor's past failures and improve his family's reputation in the future. However, when Silver learned of the villain's plans, he went back to the present as well to stop him. When Nega's ambitions were not realized, he decided to avenge his own failure by turning the entire planet into a card, which would destroy the future he hailed from. Fortunately, he was stopped by the white hedgehog.

Sonic Rivals 2[]

In Sonic Rivals 2, the earth in the future got devastated once again by the Ifrit, who had been released by Eggman Nega when he went back in time. This prompted Silver to head back through time to change the future, and after confronting the villain in the Chaotic Inferno, the Ifrit's home dimension, both the creature and Nega himself were sealed away within that dimension, presumably altering the future for the better.

Sonic Colors[]

In the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, the future is mentioned by Silver at the Sweet Mountain, stating that said timeline was much better than its depiction in one of the area's attractions.

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, under unknown circumstances, the incarnation of Silver's future from the Solaris incident got transported to White Space where it was drained of color.

Eventually, the devastated future, specifically Crisis City, was the seventh area both Classic and Modern Sonic paid a visit to after ending up in White Space. By speeding through the ruined city, the hedgehogs were able to fix space, thereby restoring the location, and by extension Blaze, from their lifeless states. At a later point, Modern Sonic was challenged to a friendly fight by Silver in the infernal metropolis, defeating the white hedgehog and claiming a Chaos Emerald in the process. When the Time Eater later got destroyed, Silver's future was seemingly returned to its rightful place.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, after the Phantom Ruby surfaced in the present of Sonic's universe, the future ended up being ruined yet again by a catastrophe of some kind. However, because everything about this disaster was either expunged or did not make sense, Silver promptly returned to Sonic's time to avert it.[6] Presumably, the future ended up being saved after the Resistance won the War to Take Back the Planet.

Team Sonic Racing[]

In Team Sonic Racing, Silver received an invitation in his era to a Grand Prix in Sonic's time. Deciding to answer the call, the white hedgehog traveled to the present.

Archie Comics[]

Silver overlooks the ruins of a city in 3437 P.X.E., from Sonic the Hedgehog #215.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Silver's future was occurred two-hundred years into the future in the year "3437 P.X.E.", this time in Mobius Prime's timeline. Due to the treachery of one of the legendary Knothole Freedom Fighters, they were all destroyed and Silver's future was doomed without them. After several failed visits to the past to prevent this devastation from happening, Silver discovered his era's ruin was due to Mecha Sally's actions, but when he set out to stop her, the Multiverse was forever changed by the Genesis Wave.

After the Super Genesis Wave re-wrote history, Silver's future became virtually indistinguishable from the games. In addition to the white hedgehog himself, individuals like Professor Von Schlemmer and Gold the Tenrec inhabit this era as well.

The Fate of Dr. Eggman[]

A previous version of Silver's future saw the world conquered by the Eggman Empire. In this timeline, everyone was living in fear and choking on polluted air. This was changed after Silver the Hedgehog went to the past to aid the Resistance in combating the Eggman Empire. When Silver later returned to his time however, he found his world in another dire situation; while the Eggman Empire had vanished, the world had become barren of any organic life and machinery, with only water and sparse metallic plant life remaining. This prompted Silver to return to the past once again to solve this crisis.[7]

All or Nothing[]

Some time after Dr. Eggman had his memories restored, he created a mechanical substance called the Metal Virus that infected several people around the world, turning them into Zombots. His research showed that the virus would eventually become unsustainable and would cause the Zombots to disintegrate; the doctor predicted that this would occur two hundred years into the future, something that Silver deduced had already happened in his time.[8]

Sonic... Everyone... Thank you, we made a good future. May your time stay peaceful, too,

Out of the Blue[]

After Silver helped stop the Metal Virus crisis in Sonic's time, he returned to his own and found that it had been restored to a peaceful and lush state.[9]

Trivia[]

  • According to the English sites for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), it is the norm in Silver's future for people to possess psychic powers, and the people of this time are described as being powerful and regularly moving objects using telekinesis.[10]
  • Ian Flynn has stated that Sega has implied to him that Silver's future is similar to Future Trunks' dimension (timeline) from Dragon Ball Z.[11]
    • Despite this explanation, unlike Future Trunks' future, whose timeline is not affected when he helps change the present (which would be another alternate timeline), Silver's future is effectively changed whenever he or someone else changes the present, as evidenced through Sonic Forces and Sonic Forces: Stress Test.
  • According to Silver in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Cookbook, the recipe for Egg Tarts is the exact same in the future as it is Sonic's timeline.
    • On a similar note, Silver notes during his 'A Rival's Chili Dog' recipe that the food in the future is as good as that in Sonic's time.
  • Despite the fact the Sonic Rivals series, where the concept of Eggman Nega being from the future was first publicly stated, was never released in Japan, Sonic Channel's description of NEGA describes him as a descendant of Doctor Eggman from a distant future.
