Not to be confused with Mecha Sonic (Death Egg Zone). For the Archie Comics character of the same name, see Silver Sonic (Archie).

The Silver Sonic[1] (メカソニック[2] Meka Sonikku?, lit. "Mecha Sonic") is Dr. Robotnik's robotic version of Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit). It is the Master Robot of Scrambled Egg Zone, making it the sixth boss of the game.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)

Silver Sonic in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

In his 8-bit debut, the Silver Sonic is Dr. Robotnik's super-secret weapon which resembles the original hedgehog, although he is slightly taller and a bit low-tech. He has a metallic grey color scheme and possesses many of his organic template's own moves, including the ability to roll up into a ball and spin, though he has a few abilities of his own. Thankfully, Sonic is more nimble and can guard against most of its attacks. It is the boss of the Scrambled Egg Zone. If Sonic has five of the Chaos Emeralds upon defeating the Silver Sonic, it would also release the sixth and final Chaos Emerald, which would grant Sonic access to Crystal Egg Zone; otherwise the game ends here.

Bad ending

The bad ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 shows Sonic the Hedgehog defeating the Silver Sonic at the end of Scrambled Egg Zone. Because the player did not collect all of the six Chaos Emeralds, Sonic cannot access Crystal Egg Zone. In the cutscene, Sonic runs by himself from day to night. At the end of the cutscene, Sonic looks up at the sky, in which only an image of Tails appears as a reminder that Tails was not rescued. Many players assumed that Tails was killed.

Sonic Mania

The Silver Sonic as it appears in Sonic Mania.

The Silver Sonic returns in Sonic Mania during the boss fight against Metal Sonic in Stardust Speedway. During the first phase of the boss fight, Metal Sonic will jack himself into a large machine resembling Eggman which will dispense a Silver Sonic.

Unlike its original appearance, the Silver Sonic can be beaten in one hit and releases a captured animal, making it more akin to a regular Badnik. If defeated, Metal Sonic will simply dispense another to take its place.

During battle, the Silver Sonic can attack by dashing foward, perform a melee attack with its claws, or by performing a Spin Dash. When performing the Spin Dash, the player can bounce into the Silver Sonic, causing it to ricochet off the walls and damage Metal Sonic if they come into contact. This is the only method to damaging Metal Sonic during this phase.

Powers and abilities

The Silver Sonic can roll and spin just like the real Sonic. If the Silver Sonic and Sonic spin attack each other simultaneously they will bounce off of each other, taking no damage. The rockets on his shoes allow him to dash, whilst the ones on his 'arms' propel him upwards. The Silver Sonic can also attack with a retractable claw, that seemingly comes out of his torso.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Silver Sonic was the prototype version of the present day model. Years ago, it ambushed Sonic and Breezie in the Scrambled Egg Zone as Sonic was heading out to save Tails. However, Sonic managed to overcome Silver Sonic and Breezie's betrayal, and completed his mission.[3]

  • The Silver Sonic is the first Sonic robot replica in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
  • Sonic will not be attacked as long as he is curled up into a ball.
  • Strangely enough, Silver Sonic is shown to have arms in its reappearance in Sonic Mania more akin to its appearance in the comics while in its concept artwork and first appearance, it had no arms (with the exception of the claw in the torso).
