Silver the Hedgehog, from Sonic Universe #5.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Silver was a time traveler from Mobius' future who traveled back in time to prevent the devastation of his world. Mentored by an ailing version of Mammoth Mogul and a descendant of Knuckles the Echidna's named Edmund, he sought to save his future by stopping the actions of a "traitor" to the Knothole Freedom Fighters. His first few attempts failed and led to erroneous accusations against Sonic, Rotor Walrus, and Antoine D'Coolette, as well as trips to the alternate realities of Light Mobius and Dark Mobius. Eventually, Mogul sent him back in time to remain there until he identified and stopped the traitor, and he ended up joining the Secret Freedom Fighters. With their aid he was able to determine that Sally Acorn was responsible for the devastation of his time, but not of her own volition-it was due to her being turned into Mecha Sally.

Following the Super Genesis Wave, Silver's history was altered to mirror that of the games, with his future anew. His new job–to close the Genesis Portals created in the Super Genesis Wave's wake–subsequently got him involved in Worlds Unite. Afterward, Silver went back to closing Genesis Portals.

Reception[]

Just like Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) itself received mostly negative reviews, the character of Silver the Hedgehog was likewise not well received at the time. Video game critics from GamesRadar+ listed Silver as one of the ten worst friends of Sonic the Hedgehog and referred to him as a "completely worthless addition to the franchise", blaming the game's poor writing for that, and criticized how Silver's voice actor Pete Capella dubbed the "I've finally found it. The Iblis trigger" line in the game's English dub.[10] Destructoid was more aggressive when reacting to Silver's later appearance as a rival character in Sonic Generations, calling him an "incredibly crap character" who deserves to be forgotten.[11] Despite the negativity from critics, Silver has become a fan favorite among fans of the series.

In recent times, Silver (and his variants, such as Sir Galahad) has become a highly requested character to feature within games.[12][13]

Statue of Silver by First 4 Figures.

It wasn't long before Silver became one of the more common characters in the Sonic series to receive merchandise. Jazwares created three-inch and six-inch action figures of Silver, as well as figures of his Super State and his Sonic and the Black Knight doppelgänger. Plush toys of Silver have been made by Kellytoy, Jazwares, Great Eastern Entertainment, and Tomy. First 4 Figures produced a twelve-inch statue, available in regular and exclusive editions. Great Eastern Entertainment, Tomy and Globe Dragon Technology have made other miscellaneous merchandise of Silver, and official T-shirts have been available from TeeTurtle and Sega Shop. Kidrobot, Diamond Select Toys, GNF Toyz and Shinobi7 have revealed upcoming potential merchandise.

Trivia[]

  • When Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) initially released, there were three conflicting backstories for Silver presented from different sources. The game's official website stated that Silver was born in a happy future, but one in danger of being destroyed by evils in the present.[14] The Prima Games strategy guide stated that Silver was born in the present, but somehow ended up in a destroyed future, inspiring him to take the steps necessary to avoid it.[15] The canon story is in the video game proper: Silver was born in a future of Sonic's world that was destroyed by Iblis. Even then, this backstory changed by the end of the game, as Solaris was erased and thus Iblis along with it. In contemporary games he is still from a future time, but one endangered by other threats such as Dr. Eggman or Eggman Nega instead.
  • The chorus for Silver's theme, "Dreams of an Absolution", bears a resemblance to the Green Hill Zone background music. Composer Lee Brotherton stated that this was not intended, but is appreciated.[16]
  • Silver bears some resemblance to Future Trunks from the Dragon Ball franchise, as both of them are from the future, live in an apocalyptic world and have tried to change another timeline. Shiro Maekawa, the writer of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), later confirmed that Silver's character was indeed based on Trunks.[17]
    • Additionally, while playing as Silver in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the player can interact with glowing symbols on the ground to use Silver's psychokinesis in specific ways. These are based on the markings on Silver's gloves, inset within a circle; however, they bear an uncanny resemblance to the Capsule Corporation logo.
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl references the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) on Silver's trophy, despite the game not being released on Wii or any Nintendo console. The trophy also looks similar to Super Sonic.
  • One controversy based around Silver are the five spines on his forehead. Fans think it resembles a cannabis plant. In actuality, the spines are based on the Japanese Red Maple leaf.
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the opening cutscene of Sonic's story shows Silver saying "I've finally found him, the Iblis Trigger." while clenching his right fist. Behind him, sparks are flying around, presumably remnants from Eggman's fiery attack on the Festival of the Sun. However, in Silver's story, he clenches his left fist and there are no sparks to be seen.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Silver is the only hedgehog whose trophy can only be obtained once. (Shadow and Amy's trophies are obtained randomly and Sonic's trophies can be won by clearing Classic Mode multiple times).
  • In Team Sonic Racing, Silver is the only hedgehog that is not a Speed Type. Instead, he is a Technique-Type.
  • In an interview with Shun Nakamura, Silver was intended for a different game about psychokinetic powers with a realistic aesthetic; they ended up scrapping the title and borrowing its concepts for use in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).[18]
    • The interview also reveals that, during the design process, Silver's hair and boots were finalized first and last, respectively.
  • Heh

A screenshot of Silver using his ESP was used in the Psychic section of the book Encyclopedia Horrifica.
  • It is unknown how Silver travels through time in Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rivals 2 and the DS version of Sonic Colors. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), he travels through time with the help of either Mephiles, Shadow, or Sonic. In Sonic Generations, it is assumed that Silver is brought from the future by the Time Eater, though this is never seen. It is also never seen how Silver travels back to his future after the game.
    • On one of the Sonic Channel backgrounds, however, Silver is said to be able to travel through time using Chaos Control.[19]
    • According to his profile in the Fast. Friends. Forever. website, Silver travels through time by going through mysterious portals that only appear when things in the past go awry.[20]
  • Sonic, Shadow and Silver have the same height and weight: 3'3" (1 m) and 77 lb (35 kg).
  • Silver is the only rival boss in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations that does not face the player at his original location, as he is fought in Crisis City.
    • Unlike Shadow and Metal Sonic (who both have a score to settle) from Sonic Generations, Silver is the only rival boss to fight against Sonic just for the fun of it.
  • Despite many fans having speculated that Silver is related to Shadow due to Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad's relationship in Arthurian lore (where the latter is the son of the former), Takashi Iizuka has confirmed that Silver is not a descendant of Shadow the Hedgehog.[21]
  • Silver was going to appear in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing as a playable racer alongside Rouge, Vector, Espio and Blaze, but was scrapped from final product.[22]
  • In the Japanese version of Team Sonic Racing, the lost timeline of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is referenced in dialogue between Silver and Sonic. Sonic notices Silver's hesitance and asks him where the determination he had when they first met is; he even references Silver's dialogue, noting that Silver declared he would "destroy" him. Silver is confused, having forgotten the events of the game entirely, and Sonic interrupts him to say the race is about to start.[23]
  • According to Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Cookbook, Silver enjoys chili dogs just like Sonic. Unlike Sonic, however, he prefers his chili dogs with crisp slaw instead of gooey cheese.
    • Additionally, the name of the dish "Rival Chili Dog" may be a reference to Silver's status as Sonic's rival as he was portrayed in the Sonic Rivals series and Sonic Generations.
  • Silver tends to default to survivalist thoughts[24]
  • Silver's favourite thing about the natural world is the skies, with blue skies being his particular favourite.[5][25] Silver's admiration for skies has been mentioned since his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).[26] It is also brought up in several other games and media, such as the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, the Japanese version of Sonic Forces, the Mario & Sonic series, and Otherworld Comedy.[27][28][29]
  • Similarly to how Sonic is commonly associated with the blue Chaos Emerald, Silver appears to be associated with the white emerald. It is one of two emeralds he tried to use to seal away Iblis and is later the emerald he would be tasked to find in End of the World in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). In Sonic Generations, Silver is seen holding onto this emerald which is given to Sonic after defeating Silver in his boss fight. Silver once more finds this emerald in the 2021 cover stories from Sonic Channel, whereby he uses its power to help lift a bridge back into place. Outside of media, Silver is also associated with the Emerald in merchandise, with FiGPiN and Zen Monkey Studios using the white emerald for Silver in their pin collections, and Jakks Pacific giving Super Silver the first white chaos emerald in their line of figures.
  • In Sonic Frontiers, the Ancients technology has an uncanny similarity to Silver's pattern on his gloves, cuffs, and the design of the Lightron. Some devices even seem to use a version of Psychokinesis in order to be interacted with. whether or not some kind of a connection between Silver and Ancients exists, or if this is purely coincidental, is unknown.
