He is the silver knight, said to hold almost the same power as Lancelot. His abilities make him dangerous.

— Profile, Sonic and the Black Knight[1]

Sir Galahad (ガラハッド Garahaddo?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog and the alternate reality doppelgänger of Silver the Hedgehog from the world of Camelot, being one of the Knights of the Round Table.

Appearance[]

Galahad is essentially a doppelganger of his mainstream counterpart. As such, he is a very silver (almost white) anthropomorphic hedgehog with gold eyes and peach skin. He has a black nose on his muzzle, two large spines at the back of his head, while on the front of his forehead there are five distinct spines flared up and back, the two final ones covering up most of his small, triangular ears. He also has a short, pointy tail.

For attire, he wears a silver visor with rounded upper corners and golden trim that, in the middle, forms a golden diamond and at the edges forms a downwards arrowhead. This visor is connected to a silver headpiece that covvers the top his two large spines and the back of his head. He also wears silver torso armour which forms a dramatic downwards point at the front and silver, multi-layered shoulder plating. Attched to the torso armour are two silver accents which curve around his lower torso on either side. On his hands he wears silver-blue gauntlets which feature an aqua, circular symbol on top. Attached to these are a set of multi-layered golden cuffs and short, silver forearm armour. He also features silver lower leg armour. In Sonic and the Black Knight, his boots are silver like the rest of his armour, but in subsequent games these were changed to a dark steel to better match his counterpart's. The boots feature cyan toe caps, a lighter silver section at the heel, a silver-white indented line up the middle and a red gem inset in gold that connects to his multi-layered golden cuffs. His boots and upper torso armour also feature Celtic knots.

Overview[]

While Galahad has no role in the main story of Sonic and the Black Knight, he is playable in multiplayer mode after clearing the "Lancelot Returns" mission in Deep Woods. Also, his profile can be obtained by earning five Mastery Stars in Knight's Passage: Legacy.

Powers and abilities[]

Sir Galahad is said to hold almost the same power as Sir Lancelot. His abilities make him dangerous, as he shares the same psychokinetic powers as his mainstream counterpart.[1]

Like his counterpart, he can use his psychic abilities to levitate in the air or to Psychokinetically lift objects, such as his sword, but he is also able to conjure magic circles that can stun opponents while draining them of their rings, taking an opponents life when they have no rings, or destroy low-level enemies. It is also able to cancel out opponents Soul Surges.

Like the other Knights of the Round Table, Sir Galahad is shown to possess a high level of swordmanship. With his sword, his primary means of attack is delievering short, fast attacks to his opponent. He is also shown to be reasonably acrobatic with his sword, being able to perform high-speed mid-air spins while using his sword to attack.

Weapons[]

Swordgala1

Sir Galahad's sword, from Sonic and the Black Knight.

Sir Galahad wields a sword that bears resemblance to a Cinquedea, a long dagger of Italy used by civilians.

Its design features a red, pyramid-shaped pommel, a black grip which connects to a golden guard fashioned after his counterpart's cuffs. The main part of the sword features an arrowhead design. the outer section features steel blade edges and the inner section features black with golden Celtic knot patterns on top. between these two sections is a thin line of cyan that glows and matches Galahad's Psychokinetic aura.

It is Galahad's primary means of attack and can be used in tandem with his psychic powers.

Real world background[]

In Arthurian legend, Galahad is one of the last major characters to appear and is the final Knight of the Round Table. Despite this, he is a rewnowned and popular figure in the legends due to his success in finding the Holy Grail. Gallant and pure-hearted, Galahad is known as the 'greastest knight' both due to his prowess in battle and his benevolence. Galahad was first introuced in the Lancelot-Grail cycle and appears in the Post-Vulgate cycle, but his most famous apperance is in the famed 'Le morte d'Arthur', where he features as a prominet figure and his quest for the Grail with Percival and Bors The Younger is documented.

Before Galahad was born, it was prophesied (by Merlin in some earlier works, and the Fisher King, Pelles in later works) that a knight by the name of 'Galahad' would be born and would be the 'Greatest and most noble Knight' in the kingdom and he would achieve in the quest of finding the Grail. Galahad was born from the illegitimate union of Sir Lancelot and Elaine of Corbenic (whom had tricked Lancelot by using a disguise to look like his one true love, Guinevere), and is commonly depicted as growing up in a Nunnery. Its here he would stay until he was old enough to be knighted.

One day, Lancelot is brought to the Nunnery where Galahad is knighted. Lancelot offers the chance to return to the Round Table but Galahad refuses, telling the other that it 'wasn't the right time'. Lancelot returns to Camelot alone. Back at Camelot word has spread of a sword with a red hilt floating down the river set in stone- sealed by Merlin- that can only be freed by the kingdom's 'Greatest Knight'. King Arthur suggests to his knights that they try it, and none of them are sucsessful. A while later, Galahad is brought to the court by a mysterious old man with nothing but a scabbard. Curious over his new knight, Arthur suggests he try and pull the sword from the stone, which Galahad does with ease. For his final test, Arthur introduces him to the Siege Perilous, the last seat on the table and known to have killed anyone who had sat in it before. Galahad sits in the seat and all of the knights are given a vauge vision of the Grail (all except Galahad, who sees it clearly). From there, the knights decide to set out on a Grail quest, which Arthur fears is the first sign of the end of The Knights of the Round table.

Several knights, including Gawain and Lancelot- who loses a fight for the first time in his life, come across Galahad on his travels where he searches for the Grail (and in some versions, picks up a blessed shield), but, ultimately, it is Percival and Bors who find themseleves as travelling comapanions, being the only other two knights dubbed pure enough to find the Grail. After Galahad heals King Pelles and recieves the covered Grail, he sets out to the meeting point where he rendezvous with Percival and Bors. Its here they meet the Holy Grail Maiden- known commonly as Percival's Sister, who gives Galahad the Sword of Strange Hangings. It's during their quest across sea that Galahad informs his companions of his wish from the Grail. The three arrive in Sarras (Where in the meantime, Percival's sister had died from a self-sacrifice), and the three travel to the kingdom. They find a tyrannous King who places them in jail, but all three survive from drinking from the Grail. The King of Sarras, who has fallen frail, sees his mistakes and gives the right to rule to Galahad, who becomes king of Sarras for a year.

At some point, Galahad sees a vision so rapterous, he makes his wish from the Grail- to die at the time of his choosing. His acsession to heaven is witnessed by Percival and Bors and his body left in the mortal world is burried next to Percival's sister, With Percival joining them not long thereafter. Bors returns to Camelot to tell of their tale.

Quotes[]

"I will claim victory!"

Trivia[]

  • Galahad's voice clips in Sonic and the Black Knight are re-used voice clips of Silver from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
  • The pose in Sir Galahad's Sonic and the Black Knight artwork was later re-used as artwork for Silver in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, though mirrored.
  • Sir Galahad wielding a sword based on a Cinquedea may be a refrerence to Silver the Hedgehog's original name, Venice, of which Soleanna from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is based on.
  • In Arthurian legend, Sir Galahad is the son of Sir Lancelot, which is referenced by the fact that Galahad can be unlocked by defeating Lancelot. It has since been confirmed this has no barings on the relations of their mainstream counterparts, however.[2]
    • Similarly Percival and Galahad are shown as close companions in the legends. Likewise, Blaze and Silver are depicted as being close companions.
  • Sir Galahad being known as the most noble and pure knight lines up with his counterpart Silver's strong sense of justice and endearing virtues.[3]
    • His nickname of 'The Silver Knight' is a play on Silvers name but also could be a reference to the 'knight in shining armour' archetype (who are typically depicted as dressed in silver), which fits in with Galahad's portrayal in the legends.
  • When Galahad levitates, the sound effect of Silver uplifiting objects from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is used. His soul surge also uses the sound effect of whenever 'Psychokinesis' is used in Sonic '06.
  • It is possible that Sir Galahad was once planned to be part of the main story of Sonic and the Black Knight. Compared to Sir Lamorak, who is also multiplayer exclusive, Galahad features a lot of the same features as the main three Knights of the Round Table whereas Lamorak is lacking. Galahad has his own unique sword design and skills while Lamorak borrows his from Sir Gawain. Galahad also features in a papercraft of the main characters in the game.

Merchandise[]

They cancel Rouge and Classic Knuckles and yet we get Galahad, nice

Sir Galahad action figure, by Jazwares.

In the Fall of 2014, around two years after the Sir Lancelot figure was first introduced and five years after Sonic and the Black Knight was published, Jazwares made a 5” figure of Sir Galahad with his sword. Galahad features 13 points of articulation and a removable visor. Curiously, despite being multi-player exclusive, Galahad was made before the likes of Sir Gawain or Sir Percival, who appear in the story.

Galahad would be the last 5-inch figure Jazwares would release before losing the rights to make the figures later in 2014.
