Gameplay

Act 1

Classic Sonic's goal in this stage is to reach the goal post in time. First you must run through numerous ancient floating buildings in the sanctuary. Then almost at the end of the stage, you will have to run up a collapsing path that will lead to the goal post. This is similar to the end of the original level in the game Sonic & Knuckles.

Red Star Rings locations

Red Star Ring #1 Make your way to the right at the start. You will see a cloud that you can jump on. The ring is on the cloud.

Red Star Ring #2 Make your way to the main path and you should come across a platform that you must spin dash under. This will send you across the screen and stop right in front of the enemy. Kill him and use the spring. You need to jump three clouds – time it right to get the ring.

Red Star Ring #3 Last three rings are at the end but require different paths to reach there. 4 and 5 are along the end lines but 3 is on a different path. You must follow this right as you retrieve the second ring.

Keep moving to the higher part and bounce along some enemies and you will eventually hit a spring which will bounce you high up. You will hit the yellow spring which will take to a direction section of the level.

Stay on-route and you will hit a spinning platform with clouds. Bounce on the cloud when it rotates to the path to the right. Failing to do so will get you on route to the last two rings as you drop down. Follow this path and you will get the third ring.

Red Star Ring #4 Get yourself to a point where you hit the speed booster and go up a ramp. You have two choices, each goes to a different right. Take the right path to get this ring at the end of the towers.

Red Star Ring #5 Take the left path instead and spin dash to the left up the wall. Now, manually jump off to the higher platform leading to the ring in the center of the towers.

After collecting all the Red Rings in the Act 1 the player will unlock Twin Spin Attack. It lets you attack in Mid Jump.

Act 2

The 3D section of this stage is similar to the Act 1 stage. You must speed your way through numerous ancient floating buildings. Similar to Act 1, Sonic must run up a collapsing path that will lead to the goal.

Red Star Rings locations

Red Star Ring #1 There is a floating platform at the start, jump up and forward to reach another platform. You will find the ring on a moving floating platform.

Red Star Ring #2 Move forward from the first ring and stay on top of the platforms. You will see 3 rainbow-colored hoops. Jump to the left to get this ring.

Red Star Ring #3 When you enter a big room with fountain and Robo’s. Attack these and chain to the top of the fountain and get the ring.

Red Star Ring #4 Take the upper route from the fountain and make your way across the area and boost through the falling blocks segment. You should hit a spring and launch to a an upper area.

Jump back and over the spring and up into the teleport. Stay on the high grounds and find the two rainbow rings. Jump higher and farther to get to a higher place and get the ring.

Red Star Ring #5 Run into a second zipline right in front of a check point. Jump off shortly after you start zipping, you should see another zipline to your right. Jump to get the ring.

Get all the Red rings in the act 2 to unlock Gauge Rebooter which will let you start with a full Boost gauge.

Characters

Trivia

  • In both Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Generations, the Death Egg can be seen in the background of Sky Sanctuary. In Sonic & Knuckles, the next level is Death Egg Zone, and in Sonic Generations, the next level is the fight against the Death Egg Robot, which ironically takes place in Death Egg.
  • In the Sky Sanctuary Hub, there are trees with grapes growing on them. In the manual of Sonic & Knuckles, it mentions that Knuckles favorite food is grapes.
  • Knuckles is one of the five characters that are saved and appear in a stage of that game, the others being Rouge (City Escape), Espio (Seaside Hill), Blaze (Crisis City) and Charmy (Planet Wisp).
  • The crumbling ground from the end of the original level is featured in both acts.
  • The Death Egg is seen rising in the background of both acts.
  • The original level is actually from Sonic & Knuckles; a Sonic 3 level was not featured in the game. This level is meant to represent Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the combined version of the two games.
  • As well as Green Hill, when using Sonic Boost in this level, the music speeds up to a faster tempo.
  • Even though Classic Knuckles was in the original version of Sky Sanctuary in Sonic & Knuckles, he wasn't seen in this version of the stage.
  • Sky Sanctuary is the one of the two "final" levels to appear as a stage in the console version (the other being Speed Highway in Tails' storyline), since it was the last level in Knuckles' storyline in the original Sonic & Knuckles. However, in Sonic's storyline, it was the 2nd-to-last level for him (or 3rd-to-last if counting the Doomsday Zone).
  • The interior segment during the Modern Stage is meant to represent Hidden Palace Zone, even having a similar teleporter.
  • The spinning tops from Marble Garden Zone are used in this Stage.
