For the Mini-Game in Sonic Shuffle, see Sky Diving.

Skydiving[1] is a special technique preformed by Sonic the Hedgehog that first appeared in Sonic Unleashed. When performing this move, Sonic controls his descent during a midair dive.

As the name implies, this techinque is mainly used when Sonic is falling from high in the air. When using this technique, Sonic adjusts his position when falling through midair by aligning his body so it becomes more streamlined. As a result, Sonic will fall faster through the air.

Skydiving is only during sections in the games where Sonic is in free-fall and enables the player to navigate their fall. While it increases the falling speed however, it also decreases the player's movements in different directions.

Game appearances

Sonic Unleashed

Skydiving's first appearance was in Sonic Unleashed where it can only be used by Sonic the Hedgehog. To increase the falling speed of the Skydiving in the gameplay, the player must press XboxX/PSSquareButton during mid-fall.

Sonic Colors

In Sonic Colors, Skydiving reappeared and was used to reach certain areas. When using Skydiving in gameplay, the player has the following controls:

Standard Wii Remote Sideways Classic Style GameCube Controller Nintendo DS
Diving movement Control Stick +Control Pad L Stick Control Stick +Control Pad
Diving descend WiiB Button1 b Button SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO DSB

Note that Super Sonic automatically accelerates when using Skydiving. The player will also start using Skydiving when Sonic is launched high up into the air. In this game, the Skydiving is also possible in 2.5D sections.

Sonic Generations

In Sonic Generations, Skydiving is only usable by Modern Sonic. Like in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors there are some places that Skydiving is required to reach. To increase the falling speed of the Skydiving in the gameplay, the player must press XboxX/PSSquareButton during mid-fall. The move is also used in the boss battle against the Egg Dragoon.

Sonic Lost World

In the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World, Skydiving made a return. To increase the falling speed of the Skydiving in the gameplay, the player must press the WiiU-Button-ZR button during free-fall. Skydiving is not used too commonly in the game as it is only used whenever Sonic is flung high into the air. Like in Sonic Colors, Super Sonic can be activated during the move, and he accelerates automatically.

Sonic Forces

In Sonic Forces, Skydiving is usable to Sonic the Hedgehog, the Avatar and Shadow the Hedgehog (via the "Episode Shadow" DLC). In this game, it retains the same properties seen in previous games. In addition, if Sonic is left idling long enough while skydiving, he will turn around and assume and more relaxed falling pose.

  • In real-life, Skydiving is the sport of jumping from an airplane and falling through the sky before opening a parachute.

Shadow Skydiving in Shadow the Hedgehog.

  • An early version of Skydiving appeared as early as in Shadow the Hedgehog as a level mechanic in Westopolis and Cosmic Fall. Unlike Skydiving though, the player descent's speed cannot be altered. Sonic and Vector, as partner characters, also make use of the technique.
