Slows down the opponent for a given time.

— Description, Sonic Rush[1]

Slow[1][2] is a recurring Item Box power-up in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Exclusive to multiplayer, this power-up can slow down opponents.

Description

Item Boxes that contain Slow depict the icon of an orb leaving ring-shaped shockwaves in its wake. It only appears in the games' multiplayer (referred collectively to as "Battle mode").

When the player obtains Slow, the opposing player will instantly be slowed down significantly; not even the Super Boost/Fire Boost will give a noticeable increase in speed. This way, the player can gain the upper hand against the opponent in the Battle mode's races. After about ten seconds however, Slow will wear off.

Game appearances

Sonic Rush

Slow first appeared in Sonic Rush where its icon was colored green. Whenever the player obtains Slow, a red and white speech bubble containing a slow-moving projectile appears above the opponent (who is displayed on the Nintendo DS' touch screen) for as long as Slow is in effect.

Sonic Rush Adventure

In Sonic Rush Adventure, Slow had a brighter icon for its Item Box. Its mechanics and overall purpose remained the same as in Sonic Rush.
