— Sonar the Fennec, Sonic the Hedgehog #278

Sonar the Fennec[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. She is a mobian fennec and a member of the Freedom Fighter group, the Desert Raiders. In reality, she is an associate of Egg Boss Nephthys the Vulture to keep the Midesta Egg Army at bay.

Concept and creation

Sonar's overall character is modeled after Miles "Tails" Prower.[1]

Appearance

Sonar the Fennec

Sonar, from Sonic the Hedgehog #278.

Sonar is a slender, teal furred mobian fennec with long triangular ears, a fluffy tail, neck-long fur on each side of her head, and purple eyes. She also has white fur around her muzzle and on the tip of her tail. For attire, she wears a pink shirt, black shorts with white cuffs, thigh high black socks and goggles with yellow lenses and a pink strap. She also wears white gloves and purple shoes, both with pink and purple ring straps.

History

Past

Inspired by the Freedom Fighters, Sonar, Spike the Porcupine, and Trevor Burrow the Mole formed a team of Freedom Fighters at Shamar, creating a checkmate with Midesta Egg Army so that they could not completely take over. The leader of the army, Nephthys the Vulture, is a close friend of the Desert Raiders and made sure to orchestrate their battles.[2][3]

Shattered World Crisis

Act Two

Sonar and her team later rescued Sonic the Hedgehog, Antoine D'Coolette, Big the Cat, and Chip from an ambush from the Midesta Egg Army. After Sonar and her team drove off the Egg Soldiers, they were greeted by Sonic himself, startling the young aspiring heroes.[4] Sonar's group then aided Sonic's team in rescuing Ehsan, with Sonar assisting Chip and Big in fighting the Dark Gaia Creatures. After Sonic's team left, though, Sonar and Spike contacted Nephthys to check up on her.[3]

DesertRaidersRejoice

Sonar and her team rejoice after the restoration of the world, from Sonic the Hedgehog #287.

Soon, Sonar and Spike welcomed back Nephthys from facing the Naugus Twins at Eggman Land.[5] While watching the Freedom Fighters broadcast, a tensed Sonar called Nepethys and told her of the situation, while the latter told her to calm down.[6] Later on, Sonar and her team would rejoice as the world was restored by Chip.[7]

Personality

Sonar is a friendly fennec who is very dedicated to keeping the fragile balance of power in Shamar in check in order to maintain peace. Underneath this exterior though, Sonar is an overly excited fan girl about the Freedom Fighters, struggling to be like them and their allies.

Powers and abilities

Sonar Attack

Sonar is an agile strike attacker and excellent hand-to-hand combatant, easily subduing an Egg Soldier with one chop to the neck. Sonar also has high athletic skills, being able to jump down from great heights and land safely on her feet.[2]

Sonar possesses ultrasonic hearing which she can use to pick up intel.[1]

Relationships

Desert Raiders

Sonar works closely with Spike and Trevor in the Desert Raiders, as they were particularly inspired to make their Freedom Fighters team to defend Shamar.

Nephthys the Vulture

Sonar and her team became an associate of Egg Boss Nephthys the Vulture to keep the Midesta Egg Army at bay. Being old friends, Sonar refers to Nephthys as "Neph".

Trivia

  • Sonar's species (fennec) is a smaller species of fox, reflecting how her design was inspired by Tails.
