Sonic's Napoleon[3][4] (ソニックのナポレオン[2] Sonikku no Naporeon?) is a mobile phone game released as part of the Sonic Cafe service offered by Sega. It was later made available through the Puyo Puyo! Sega service as well.[5]

Gameplay[]

In Sonic's Napoleon, the player controls Sonic the Hedgehog as he plays the Japanese card game, Napoleon. This should not be confused with the French/British card game of the same name, as they are completely different.

The game is played with a 53 card deck (includes one joker) with the "point cards" being the ace, king, queen, jack, and ten of each of the four suits. This means that there are twenty point cards total. Each card also has a different strength value, with the ace being the strongest standard card and the two being the weakest. There are also a variety of special cards which outweigh the standard ones:[2]

↑ Strong ↑
Queen of hearts
Enchantress (よろめき[2] Yoromeki?)
Ace of spades
Mighty (マイティ[2] Maiti?)
Joker
Jack of the same suit as the trump
Regular jack (正ジャック[2] Sei jakku?)
Jack of the same color as the trump
Sub-jack (裏ジャック[2] Ura-jakku?)
Card of the suit designated by Napoleon
Trump (切札[2] Kirifuda?)
↓ Weak ↓

The goal of the game is to gain the most points over five rounds of play. At the start of each round, a "Napoleon" is declared by whose hand of cards has the most points in that round, and the other players are then all playing against that one player. As such, alliances can be forged and broken amongst the non-Napoleon players (known as the "Coalition forces") to help limit the Napoleon's points. The player with the most points at the end of the five rounds wins.

High scores can be uploaded to an online leaderboard.

Items[]

Sonic's Napoleon features multiple different items, which can assist the player in getting a high score. These items are replenished every month, with there being no in-game way to obtain them. However, a prerequisite must be met before gaining access to said items. The player also will receive a set amount of Rings every day, which serve as the keys to access the official game mode from which the player can upload their high score. Each item only lasts one round, with the types as follows:

Item Effect[2] Unlock[2]
Ring Allows access to the official game mode N/A
Hero (英雄[2] Eiyū?) Doubles the final score Win three times in a row
Chief of Staff (名参謀[2] Mei Sanbō?) Provides forty bonus points if the player does not appoint an adjutant Win ten times in a row
Revolution (革命[2] Kakumei?) Gives bonus points if the player wins, but subtracts points if they lose Win sixty times

  • Practice Match (練習試合[3] Renshū Shiai?): The same as the official match, just without the Ring requirement or upload prompt.
  • Ranking (ランキング[3] Rankingu?): Allows the player to access the online leaderboards.
  • How to Play (あそびかた[3] Asobi Kata?): Displays the rules of the game.
