Sonic: Mega Drive - The Next Level Issue 1 is a special one-shot published by Archie Comics in celebration of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise's 25th anniversary. It is the sequel to Sonic: Mega Drive #1.^[1]

The cover artwork for this issue is a homage to the original Japanese box artworks of the first three Sonic the Hedgehog video games.
- The cover art is also an homage to Sonic and Metal Sonic's iconic race in Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
The comic's title, as well as the name of Eggman's new weapon in the story, are reference to the Sega Genesis console's original Japanese name, the Sega Mega Drive.
The subtitle is a homage to Sega's tagline in their US advertisements in the 90's.
