Sonic Advance is a Japanese-exclusive port of the 2001 Game Boy Advance video game Sonic Advance for the Android mobile devices. It was published and released as a free Android application from the Android Marketplace (now known as Google Play).[1]

Aside from minor tweaks to accommodate the Android format, the game itself is nearly identical to the original. However, it possesses several bugs depending on the device.

Gameplay

Modifications

  • The game's resolution is improved from the original Game Boy Advance version to fit all Android devices: the game image is upscaled three times the base image size, which was increased to 264x158 (up from 240x160 on the Game Boy Advance).
  • The Invincibility theme, which was originally a remix of its classic theme featured in Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is replaced with a remix of the Sonic Advance title theme (possibly due the licensing issues of Masato Nakamura music).
  • The Egg Mobile-H and Egg Mobile-D battles in X-Zone no longer use the remixes of their original themes from Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 respectively (possibly due the licensing issues of Masato Nakamura music). Instead, they have been replaced with the final boss themes from Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
  • The Sonic and Tails mode from the original game is inaccessible in this port.
  • The game does not feature the Tiny Chao Garden and contains no files referring to it.

Bugs

The Android port of Sonic Advance features a number of bugs that depend on the device, with some users reporting normal game performance while others report unbearable issues. This is possibly due to the game only being tested on a limited range of hardware. As a result, there have been reports of bugs like ridiculously slow gameplay, terrible framerate on various Android devices, and the game locking up when the device goes into sleep mode.

To compete with bugs and lagging issues, the game requires an updated version of Android and a strong device.
