Sonic Gammon (ソニックギャモン[2] Sonikku Gyamon?) is a mobile phone game released in Japan as part of the Sonic Cafe service offered by Sega. It was later made available through the Puyo Puyo! Sega service as well.[3]

Gameplay[]

In this game, the player plays as Sonic the Hedgehog in a game of backgammon against Dr. Eggman. Sonic plays as the white pieces, with Eggman then being the orange ones.

The gameplay is identical to standard, board game format backgammon, with the exception of the doubling cube not being present. The board is set up in two halves, each containing multiple of the two player's fifteen pieces. Alternating colors of triangular points are seen along the outer two edges of said halves, with the all pieces present on these at the start of the match. Seen in the image to the left (although two red pieces have already been moved in the top-right corner) are the starting positions as viewed from the player's (Sonic's) side. Two six-sided dice are rolled to determine the amount of spaces the player can move their piece or pieces, as the total can be split among as many as the player desires.

The game is won upon all of the player's pieces being removed from the board.

The games can be saved at any point and high scores can be uploaded to the internet.

Modes[]

Sonic Gammon features multiple modes of gameplay, though they all follow the same format:

  • Official Match (公式戦[2] Kōshikisen?): The goal here is to get the highest score, with only one daily chance to get it. Upon getting a high score, the player can upload it to the leaderboards over the internet.
  • Practice (練習[2] Renshū?): The same as the above mode, though scores cannot be uploaded and it can be played an unlimited amount of times.
  • Continue (続きから[2] Tsuzuki Kara?): Continues the paused game.
  • Rule Explanation (ルール説明[2] Rūru Setsumei?): Displays the rules of the game.
  • Ranking (ランキング[2] Rankingu?): Brings up the online leaderboards.
