Super-fast with a passion for adventure.

Sonic Boom Official Website[1]

Template:Character Sonic the Hedgehog is the main protagonist of Sonic Boom. He is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog gifted with super speed who fights Dr. Eggman and other forces of evil alongside his group of friends as their leader.

Concept and Creation

During the development for Sonic's redesign, the developers went through a long process where they experimented with different accessories before they decided to stick with the "Scarf Sonic" design.[2][3] They settle with giving Sonic a neckerchief because it played homage to the classic adventure theme and was an action adventure trope which fit with Sonic's game character role and emphasized his "get-up and get-go" attitude and his love for adventure.[3][4] According to Bob Rafei, Sonic's scarf is partially based on Nathan Drake's scarf from Uncharted.[5]

The sports tape Sonic wears is inspired by fighters and American football players and is meant to give him a sense of practical heroism by showing that that he is not vain, which is a trait more fitting for villains, when saving the world and to give him a more grounded approach.[3] He specially got sports tape around his feet to emphasize that his specialty was speed.[6] He also received blue arms and additional spikes to truly differentiate him from his main game series counterpart.[6]

Appearance

Retaining most of his appearance from his main series video game counterpart, Sonic has blue fur all around his body, with minor exceptions such as his chest and muzzle. He sports a brown neckerchief and has sports tape on his hands, parts of his arms and around his feet. Unlike his previous incarnations, his arms are also covered in blue fur. He has some cowlick-like spikes that stick out from his quills. Sonic also appears to be much slimmer than his video game counterpart, making him tall and lanky.

History

Games

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Sonic Boom Team Shot

Sonic with his friends in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Sonic was having a regular day of foiling another of Dr. Eggman's evil plans with Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Before he knew it however, Sonic and his friends arrived on an island where they encounter an ancient tomb sealed deep within the island. There, Sonic makes a little mistake and releases a powerful villain from the Ancients, named Lyric, who plans to power his army of war mongering robots with the Chaos Crystals to destroy everything organic and create a world of twisted metal and robots. To stop Lyric, Sonic is forced put aside his solo-hero act, work together with his friends and find the Chaos Crystals before Lyric.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, Sonic was contacting Amy as she was investigating an ancient language and manuscript detailing the history and whereabouts of a Lost Crystal of Power when he saw Amy being kidnapped over video-link by Lyric, who wanted the Crystal's power for himself. To trace Amy’s footsteps and save her from the clutches of Lyric and his robot army, Sonic had to team up with Tails, Knuckles and Sticks.

TV Series

Archie Comics

On a bright day on the beach, Sonic was having a fight with Dr. Eggman and one of his mechs. With Sonic ever confident in battle, Tails, Knuckles and Amy gradually came to his aid, and together the quartet beat Eggman's mech and drove the doctor off. No sooner, Sonic and the others met Sticks who told them Tails' house had been robbed. Sticks takes the gang to Tails' house, and they discovered that it was gone: what Sticks meant was that Tails' whole house had been stolen, and she explains that a "cyborg rock golem" went off with Tails' house which made Sonic suspect that Eggman was behind it.[7]

Personality

Sonic is noted for having a passion for adventure and is very much a thrill-seeker, always looking for the next thrill, challenge, and triumph.[1][8] For Sonic, speed is a way of life; he runs fast, thinks fast and even eats fast. He acts on instinct and lives in the moment, though he tends to be reckless and run headlong into trouble without a plan.[8]

Sonic has a large ego that very often drives him and is laid-back, cool, quick-witted, and somewhat cynical. He is likewise cocky and has a snarky tongue, and is prone to joke around even in dire situations. However, he is very benevolent and heroic, and when the situation calls for it or his friends are in trouble, Sonic can be serious and will immediately rush to their aid. Sonic also does not back down or give up, because he has an unwavering belief and faith in himself and his abilities.[8]

Initially, Sonic was a loner, being bend of facing danger and foes on his own. When his actions endangered his friends, however, Sonic realized he could not go out alone and needed to know when to ask for and let his friends help.[9][10]

Powers and Abilities

Sonic's most notable skill is his ability to move at super speed, allowing him to run at speeds greater than Mach 1. Though his exact top speed is unknown, he can move fast enough to create a sonic boom without effort.

In line with his speed, Sonic has significant acrobatic skills and agility, sufficient enough to perform perfect synchronized mid-air movements. He also has extremely quick reflexes, being able to react instantly to dangers, and has enhanced jumping skills, allowing him to jump very high into the air.

Sonic is able to curl up and spin into a spiky ball which is a variation on the tendency for hedgehogs to roll into tight balls for protection. While in this stance, Sonic can damage, destroy and mow down obstacles or foes when in motion. He is also a skilled combatant and his fighting style relies on his footwork styles along with fast-strike tactics and quick maneuvers.

Relationships

Doctor Eggman

Dr. Eggman is Sonic's arch nemesis.[11] Despite that, Sonic does not really take account of the doctor and teases him with jokes and sarcasm simply for fun.

Miles "Tails" Prower

Sonic's best friend is Miles "Tails" Prower. He shares a brotherly relationship with Tails and they are equal partners in Sonic's adventures.[12][4]

Though he might put Tails in danger with his half-baked plans, Sonic cares very much for Tails' well-being. When he thought that Tails had been killed after their battle with Burnbot, Sonic decided to fire him as his sidekick so that he would not get hurt anymore. Once Tails proved himself though, Sonic regained his faith in him and rehired him on the spot.

Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles the Echidna is another of Sonic's close friends. They both have a friendly rivalry,[12] but Sonic does not think that Knuckles is the sharpest tool in the shed.[13]

Amy Rose

Amy Rose is another one of Sonic's close friends. In this adaptation Sonic is comfortable being around Amy, as shown when he allowed Amy to join him, without struggle, in searching the Ancient Template for one of the Chaos Crystals in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. He is also impressed at Amy's fighting skills, and is concerned for her when she is kidnapped by Lyric.

While Sonic claims to have no interest in Amy's love life and is oblivious to Amy's love for him, he got nervous when he thought that Amy was getting ready for a date in her home.
