Sonic Boom Official Website[1]

Template:Character Sonic the Hedgehog is the main protagonist of the Sonic Boom series. He is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog gifted with super speed who fights Dr. Eggman and other forces of evil alongside Team Sonic as their leader.

Concept and Creation

During the development for Sonic's redesign, the developers went through a long process where they experimented with different accessories before they decided to stick with the "Scarf Sonic" design.[2][3] They settle with giving Sonic a neckerchief because it played homage to the classic adventure theme and was an action adventure trope which fit with Sonic's game character role and emphasized his "get-up and get-go" attitude and his love for adventure.[3][4] According to Bob Rafei, Sonic's scarf is partially based on Nathan Drake's scarf from Uncharted.[5]

The sports tape Sonic wears is inspired by fighters and American football players and is meant to give him a sense of practical heroism by showing that that he is not vain, which is a trait more fitting for villains, when saving the world and to give him a more grounded approach.[3] He specially got sports tape around his feet to emphasize that his specialty was speed.[6] He also received blue arms and additional spikes to truly differentiate him from his main series counterpart.[6]

Appearance

Sonic retains most of the appearance from his main series counterpart, but has a few physical and clothing differences. He is much slimmer and taller, with longer arms and legs, which gives him a lanky appearance. His quills are also slightly messier, having some cowlick-like spikes that sticks out from his top- and lower quills, and his arms are covered completely in blue fur, as opposed to being skin-colored.

For attire, Sonic wears a pair of white gloves with cuffs and a pair of red sneakers, which has white cuffs, grey soles, and a large, rectangular gold buckle on the top. Both of his gloves and sneakers have white sports tape around them, which is wrapped around his palms, the lower half of his arms and legs, and the heels of his sneakers. Finally, he sports a short brown neckerchief around his neck.

History

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Sonic Boom Team Shot

Sonic with his friends in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Sonic was having a regular day of foiling another of Dr. Eggman's evil plans with Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Before he knew it however, Sonic and his friends arrived on an island where they encounter an ancient tomb sealed deep within the island. There, Sonic makes a little mistake and releases a powerful villain from the Ancients, named Lyric, who plans to power his army of war mongering robots with the Chaos Crystals to destroy everything organic and create a world of twisted metal and robots. To stop Lyric, Sonic is forced put aside his solo-hero act, work together with his friends and find the Chaos Crystals before Lyric.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, Sonic and his team saved Sticks as she was caught in a rockslide in a ravine. In the free, Sticks told them that an underground army would destroy them all, but Sonic was skeptical about it. Later, Sonic contacted Amy as she was investigating an ancient language and manuscript detailing the history and whereabouts of a Lost Crystal of Power when he saw her being kidnapped over video-link by Lyric, who wanted the crystal's power for himself. To trace Amy’s footsteps and save her from Lyric and his robot army, Sonic teamed up with Tails, Knuckles and Sticks.

TV series

When chasing after Dr. Eggman, Sonic arrived at a mine where the doctor unleashed his Burnbot on him. As they chased each other, Sonic contacted Tails in the Tornado and with his sidekick's help, he knocked back Burnbot. In retaliation, Burnbot made Tails crash, so Sonic buried the robot in rubble and got to the crash site. While he found Tails alive, Sonic promised to never let him get hurt again. Once Tails recovered, Sonic fired him as his sidekick to protect him and held try-outs to find a new one. To his surprise however, both Tails and Eggman applied for the job, who he begrudgingly accepted as candidates (along with Fastidious Beaver) since all qualified candidates were welcome. Sonic then set up a race to test them, but when Eggman revealed his plan to get rid of them, Sonic rescued Tails' when the doctor and Burnbot made Tails crash into a frozen lake. Burnbot then used its fire upgrades to make Sonic fall into the water, but Tails saved him, and together they beat Burnbot and got away. Afterwards, the two reconciled and Sonic rehired Tails as sidekick.[7]

While sleeping at Tails' house, Sonic met Dr. Eggman, Orbot and Cubot at the door who needed a place to stay while their lair underwent repairs. Against Sonic's better judgment, he allowed them to stay. However, after just a day, Eggman drove Sonic and Tails crazy with his obnoxious actions and they were ready to kick him out. Following a "roommate meeting" hosted by Amy though, they agreed to give Eggman another chance. After this though, Sonic and Tails were kept awake all night by Eggman with social activities. The next morning, Eggman revealed to Sonic and his friends that he lied about his lair so he could exhaust them, and summoned Obliteratorbot to destroy them. However, Obliteratorbot misinterpreted Eggman's orders and attacks his lair, but Sonic was convinced by Eggman to stop the robot. At the lair, Sonic had his team-mates stall Obliteratorbot while he, Tails and Eggman reached the robot's kill switches in the lair. Despite their drowsiness, Sonic and Tails succeed and stopped Obliteratorbot, though they were too late to save the lair. Afterwards, Sonic made Eggman stay at his lair ruins.[8]

As Sonic, Amy, Knuckles and Sticks were relaxing on the beach, Tails showed them his invention UT, which was capable of translating any language. However, tension was created between Sonic and the others when UT began translating their private thoughts from the subtext of their speech. The next day, Sonic and the others met Tails and UT again where the robot started "translating" their comments into insults. However, as they began fighting, Tails discovered this UT was a fake send by Eggman to tear them apart. While Tails headed out to save the real UT, Sonic and the others remained behind, not thinking UT was worth saving. Later, UT returned to Sonic and the others where it revealed a message from Tails and translated it into a call to rescue Tails from Eggman's lair. Sonic and the gang then went to Eggman's lair where they freed Tails and beat Eggman's robot, and Sonic promised more adventures with UT until Sticks threw it into the sea.[9]

When Eggman unleashed his Anti-fire Bot on the village, Team Sonic came to stop it, with Sonic destroying it. However, because Sticks showed ill treatment of animals during the mission, Sonic and the team decided to get Sticks a pet to teach her compassion. On Sonic and Sticks' shopping trip, however Sticks chose a disgusting robo-dog she named "Buster". Over the next week, Buster was an annoyance to Sonic and the others' activities which culminated in Buster keeping them from stopping a robbery committed by Orbot and Cubot. Sonic and the team tried to make Sticks give up Buster when Eggman showed with a gift for Buster and revealed he create Buster before the gift transformed Buster into a large robot that caught Sonic and the team. However, Sticks managed to assume control over Buster, who released Sonic and the others and got rid of Eggman. The team then said goodbye to Buster when Sticks released him due to his dangerous nature.[10]

While in the village, Sonic and his team saw it being bombarded by meteors which Sticks managed to protect them from with her own defense system. Later, Sonic and the others learned from Sticks that she had been nominated for an Awardy Award for her heroism, but refused to go to such an elegant event because she would embarrass herself with her feral behavior. Begrudgingly, Sonic was made Sticks escort to the gala and assisted her in her lessons to become a proper lady. At the gala, Sonic and Sticks got off on the right foot, but when the time came for the award to be handed out, Sonic learned Eggman was a nominee as well (by cheating). When Eggman did not get the award and attacked everyone in vengeance, Sonic and his team tried to fight his robots, but were incapacitated. Thanks to Sticks though, Sonic was freed and engaged Eggman's Stufferbot until the doctor retreated, saving the gala.[11]

When the gang was having lunch, Sonic slacked off on Amy's decorative instructions for the meal, making her feel unappreciated. Eggman then showed up to hire Amy to redecorate his lair for Modern Lair Magazine which Amy accepted to Sonic's surprise. After while, Sonic realized they did not treat Amy right and went to Eggman's lair with his team to check on her, only to hear from Eggman that Amy was staying with him. Not buying the lie, Sonic and the team broke into the lair with Sonic using Amy's hammer to break through the walls and found Amy trapped. Sonic made amends with Amy and together, the team trashed Eggman's lair and his robots on their way out, which resulted in Eggman's lair not getting a place in Modern Lair Magazine. To cheer Amy up, Sonic offered her to redecorate his shack.[12]

During a visit to Meh Burgers to have lunch with Amy, Sonic's meal was postponed due to Eggman and the cashier, Dave. Later, Sonic and Tails were testing Tails' Reverse-polarizer when Orbot showed up, asking them to repair Cubot. Shortly after, the duo went to Eggman's lair after they picked up the signal from two planet-destroying doomsday devices there. At the lair, they discovered that Eggman and his intern Dave were competing for who could destroy the world best with their doomsday devices, so Sonic and Tails manipulated them into calibrating their devices so they would cancel each other out when activated. When that did not work and they created a black hole instead, Sonic followed Tails' plan and used his Reverse-polarizer inside the black hole to destroyed it, thus saving existence.[13]

While home, Sonic found a batch of cookies, but before he could eat one, he got a message from Tails who needed help stopping his wild vacuum-robot. When Sonic returned with Tails after the fight, he had but one cookie left which he gave to Tails upon the fox cub's request. Later, Sonic was watching TV when he met Orbot who informed him that all of his team-mates had been turned into clones of Eggman from eating the cookies (which were made by Eggman). Sonic went to Eggman's lair to rescue them, but could not fight back when Eggman had them attack him. However, his friends quickly began to fighting over the honor of capturing him, so Sonic made a cookie with his DNA which he gave Eggman, turning him into an ally. With his help, Sonic made some new cookies that he used to turn his friends back to normal. The good Eggman thought they would work together from now on, but Team Sonic did not like the idea and turned the doctor back to normal.[13]

On a bright day on the beach, Sonic was having a fight with Dr. Eggman in his Big Boy where he confidently taunted the doctor as they fought. Shortly after, Tails came to Sonic's aid and the two combated Eggman as Knuckles and Amy arrived and joined the fight. Once Amy had laid out a plan of attack, Sonic and his team attacked the Big Boy at critical points and brought it down, forcing Eggman to retreat.[14]

No sooner, Sticks arrived at the beach in panic, who told them Tails' house had been robbed. Sticks took Sonic and the gang to Tails' house, and they discovered that the whole house was gone: what Sticks meant was that Tails' house had been stolen, and she explains that a "cyborg rock golem" rose up from the ground and left with Tails' house on its head. Suspecting it was one of Eggman's creations, Sonic thought of a vague plan to get Tails' house back (while dealing with Knuckles' difficulty with understanding the situation) when Sticks seemingly caught the scent of the robot and they followed her. Though it turned out Sticks was only smelling the grass, the group still found the Rock-cyborg by following its footprints and Sonic got his friends to set up an ambush while he lead the robot to them. With the Rock-cyborg hating his guts, Sonic was able to draw it into the ambush where the others made it fall over, allowing Sonic to destroy it and make Tails' house fall on its original foundation. Sonic then celebrated their victory though he told Tails that he did not have this in mind when he wanted to "crash at [his] place".[14]

Not long after, Eggman returned in the Big Boy and Sonic, Tails, Amy and Sticks engaged the doctor. While Sonic was quick to recognize the poorly patched-up mech, he was knocked away and trapped in a small cage by Knuckles who claimed he was now working with Eggman because he had had it with Amy criticizing him. Sonic's other team-mates were soon captured as well and they were taken into the Big Boy's cargo hold. While Sonic went stir crazy, Knuckles revealed he was pretending to work for Eggman to fool him before going after the doctor to free them (after Amy and Tails convinced him that his plan was brilliant despite its flaws). Sonic was soon after freed by Sticks and in a rush over his regained freedom, he broke the team of the Big Boy as Knuckles made Eggman retreat. After they had dealt with the stray Orbot and Cubot however, Sonic found Amy in a panic over having lost her piko hammer.[15]

Personality

Sonic is noted for having a passion for adventure and is very much a thrill-seeker, always looking for the next thrill, challenge, and triumph.[1][16] For Sonic, speed is a way of life; he runs fast, thinks fast and even eats fast.[16] He is in fact so addicted to speed that he cannot handle staying still for too long, which can cause him to go extremely stir crazy.[15] He acts on instinct and lives in the moment, though he tends to be reckless and run headlong into trouble without a plan.[16] When being honest, he tends to be rather blunt.

Sonic is known for having a large ego that is his typical driving force, and is as well laid-back, cool and quick-witted. He is likewise cocky, playful, cheeky and possesses a snarky tongue, also is prone to joke around even in dire situations. However, he is very courageous,[17] benevolent and heroic, and when the situation calls for it or his friends are in trouble, Sonic can be serious and will immediately rush to their aid. Sonic also does not back down or give up, because he has an unwavering belief and faith in himself and his abilities.[16]

Sonic is noted to be strongly loyal towards his friends, though initially on, he was somewhat of a loner and cynical. While he was willing to work together with his friends in times of need, he would show more interest in facing danger and foes on his own and would even take credit for what they did collectively. Through their battles against Lyric though, Sonic realized how much stronger he was with a team to back him up, which culminated in the final battle with Lyric where Sonic proclaimed that his friends were his strength. Since then, Sonic has become a much more admirable team-mate and leader, being quick to recognize and acknowledge his team-mates contributions and ask for their help.

Powers and Abilities

Sonic's most notable skill is his ability to move at super speed, allowing him to run at speeds greater than Mach 1. Though his exact top speed is unknown, he can move fast enough to create a sonic boom without effort.[7] In line with his speed, Sonic has significant acrobatic skills and agility, sufficient enough to perform perfect synchronized mid-air movements. He also has extremely quick reflexes, being able to react instantly to dangers, and has enhanced jumping skills, allowing him to jump very high into the air.

Sonic possesses significant physical strength, though far from the same level as Knuckles', which is mostly demonstrated with his legs. He can kick a robot hard enough to knock it through a rock wall and he can punch the ground with enough force to cause cracks and release a minor shockwave, though it is debatable whether the latter's power comes from his super speed, his strength, or a combination of both.

Sonic's Homing Attack.

Sonic is able to curl up and spin into a spiky ball which is a variation on the tendency for hedgehogs to roll into tight balls for protection. While in this stance, Sonic can damage, destroy and mow down obstacles or foes when in motion. He is also a skilled combatant and his fighting style relies on his footwork styles along with fast-strike tactics and quick maneuvers.

Weaknesses

Like his main series counterpart, Sonic cannot swim and sinks in water.[7]

Relationships

Doctor Eggman

Dr. Eggman is Sonic's arch nemesis,[18] though their relationship is rather complex. On one hand, Sonic has a strong dislike of the doctor, though he does not really take account of him and teases him with jokes and sarcasm. On the other hand, when not fighting each other, Sonic and Eggman act rather passive, allowing each other to be nearby without them going at each other's throats, though Sonic retains his dislike of the doctor. When Eggman claimed to be homeless, Sonic even allowed him to stay at Tails' home, though it was more on the grounds of proving himself the better person.[8] Also, when dealing with a common threat, they are willing to put aside their differences and work together to stop it.

Miles "Tails" Prower

Sonic's best friend is Miles "Tails" Prower. He shares a brotherly relationship with Tails and they are equal partners in Sonic's adventures.[19][4] They are extremely close and both are willing to sacrifice their life for the other.[7]

Though he might put Tails in danger with his half-baked plans, Sonic cares very much for Tails' well-being. When he thought that Tails had been killed after their battle with Burnbot, Sonic decided to fire him as his sidekick so that he would not get hurt. Once Tails proved himself though, Sonic regained his faith in him and rehired him on the spot.[7]

Amy Rose

Amy Rose is another one of Sonic's close friends and team-mates. In this adaptation, Sonic is oblivious to Amy's love for him and is comfortable being around her as shown when they searched for one of the Chaos Crystals in the Ancient Template without Sonic struggling. He is also impressed at Amy's fighting skills, and is concerned for her when she is kidnapped by Lyric. According to UT, Sonic also cares about her well-being.[9]

While Sonic claims to have no interest in Amy's love life, he tried to cover up his embarrassing concern when he heard from Knuckles that Amy was getting ready for a date with someone else at her home.

Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles the Echidna is another of Sonic's close friends and team-mates. They both have a friendly rivalry going on,[19] where Sonic would tease Knuckles while Knuckles sees him as his sidekick. Deep down though, they share a mutual bond of respect which neither of them is willing to admit, like when Sonic was amazed when Knuckles displayed his strength in The Pit only to quickly cover it up. Regardless, Sonic does not think that Knuckles is the sharpest tool in the shed.[9] The two are also shown to goof off together.[11]
