Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu?) is a port of the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog that was developed by Backbone Entertainment and Ziggurat Interactive for use on game-compatible iPods, being available under the Sega Mobile banner.

Devices that are compatible with the game include the fifth-generation iPod touch, iPod Classic, and third-generation iPod Nano.[1]

Plot[]

Gameplay[]

The game is controlled by using the iPod's Click Wheel to move and the center button to jump. Along with these two, holding the Play/Pause button will make Sonic crouch, though doing so for too long will put the iPod into sleep mode. Alternatively, there is a second control set-up in which the player can touch the Click Wheel to move and press down on it to jump. Pressing Menu will bring up the pause menu. Either control scheme can make the game more challenging than it originally was.

New features[]

Basic gameplay in Sonic the Hedgehog is the same as its Sega Mega Drive counterpart, albeit with a few key changes.

  • An in-game tutorial is available to help new players get accustomed to the game.
  • The game has a new auto-save feature which will save the game at the beginning of any level that is reached.
  • There is also an unlimited number of continues.
  • Loading screens are added between levels, and when starting the game.
  • A new pause menu is implemented, which gives players a range of options including adjusting the control scheme and abandoning the current game.
