South Island is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is an island in the Acorn Archipelago, where Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies have battled Dr. Eggman on several occasions.

Description[]

South Island is an island ruled by the Kingdom of Acorn. Unlike most islands, South Island moves around the ocean surface, never staying in one place.[1] Numerous locations can be found on this island, including green fields, cities, and ancient ruins.

History[]

Past[]

For some time, South Island has been part of the Kingdom of Acorn, which would peacefully rule it. During Nigel Acorn's reign however, the evil scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik, with help from Julian Snively and Royal Wizard Walter Naugus, was able to send Nigel and Walter to the Special Zone. After this, Robotnik took over the Kingdom of Acorn, and South Island by extension. During this period, the doctor would exploit the natural resources of the island to build Chemical Plant Zone on Westside Island and begin construction of the Death Egg.[2][3][4][5]

At one point however, Robotnik (now under the alias of "Dr. Eggman") began being pushed back by Sonic the Hedgehog, who would later become his biggest nemesis. While making his way through South Island, Sonic was able to free the regions of the island from Eggman's rule and travel to the Special Zone to collect six Chaos Emeralds and save Walter Naugus, who was disguised as Nigel Acorn. After Sonic defeated Eggman and Snively at their base of operations on South Island - the Scrap Brain Zone - he and "Nigel" traveled back to Westside Island.[6][1]

Later, Eggman kidnapped Tails, Sonic's best friend and sidekick, in an attempt to lure Sonic to a trap on South Island and defeat him for good. During this incident, the doctor had help from Breezie the Hedgehog, who was "saved" from the Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad by Sonic in South Island's Underground Zone. Unbeknownst to him however, Breezie would provide Eggman with information about Sonic. At Scrambled Egg Zone, Sonic encountered Silver Sonic. However, Sonic defeated it.[7][8] During Sonic's confrontation with Eggman in the Egg Storm Chamber, where the doctor held Tails captive, the two were kidnapped by Walter and Wendy Naugus, who sought revenge on Eggman and Sonic. During this, Eggman let Tails go free, while he and Sonic were trapped in crystal by the Naugus twins. In the end though, the two were able to escape.[9]

More recently, Sonic and a past version of himself visited locations from South Island during an incident involving the Time Eater.[10][11]
