Speed Highway
Next Stage >>

Speed Highway (スピードハイウェイ Supīdo Haiwei?) is the fourth Stage in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations. It is a re-imagination of Speed Highway from Sonic Adventure, and part of the Dreamcast Era.

Description[]

Modeled after the original Action Stage, Speed Highway is an urban setting in Station Square. The background consists of many tall skyscrapers and other large buildings underneath a nighttime sky littered with stars. Other decorations include helicopters, signs with arrows, and billboards promoting different products. The platforms here are large streets high above the ground, with decorations that differ depending on the Act. In Act 1, they have white lines and short concrete walls on the sides with red and yellow lines. In Act 2 on the other hand, they have white arrows on their surfaces indicating the direction that the player has to go in, and short concrete walls with yellow and black warning signs.

At one point during both Acts of Speed Highway, the playable character will enter a hotel-like building with beige walls with a horizontal, crimson line at the top and bottom; yellow fences; white lights, and some decorations in the form of plants, paintings, red carpets, and chairs. Also, at the end of Act 2, the sky will turn a white and beige-ish color with large blue clouds covering it.

Story[]

A version of Speed Highway from somewhere in spacetime would be sent to White Space by the Time Eater, devoid of any color and life. This would be the fourth area Classic and Modern Sonic pay a visit to after ending up in White Space. By speeding through Speed Highway, the Sonics are able to fix space, thereby restoring the area and, by extension, Cream and Cheese, from the lifeless states they had been put in by the Time Eater.

Gameplay[]

Much like the original Action Stage, Speed Highway is a very fast-paced stage, with a mostly linear level design. Both Acts feature the same gimmicks seen in the original Speed Highway, with the addition of balloons.

Overview[]

Act 1[]

Act 2[]

Challenge Acts[]

Act 1[]

  • Cream: Chao Hunt: Compete with Cream to find more Chao than her and reach the goal.
  • Hot Pursuit: Avoid getting hit by the pursuing enemies and get to the goal in time.
  • High Speed Challenge 2: Collect Power Sneakers to reach the goal before the time runs out.
  • Resisting Arrest: Beware of Cop Speeders! Reach the goal before time runs out.
  • Doppelganger Race!: Face of against Sonic's double and beat him in a race to the goal.

Act 2[]

  • Overdrift: Grab as many Rings as you can while drifting and get to goal in time.
  • Hot Pursuit: Chase the Sprinkler enemy that's dropping Rings. Collect a set number and reach the goal in time!
  • Doppelganger Race!: Face of against Sonic's double and beat him in a race to the goal.
  • Drill Baby Drill: Smash your way through boxes as you descend to the goal before time runs out.
  • Espio: Master of Camouflage: Only the searchlight can reveal Espio. Face him and get to goal in time.

Trivia[]

  • Speed Highway includes numerous references and Easter eggs:
  • This version of Speed Highway does not include the "At Dawn" section like the original version, but the background in Act 2 changes to sunrise after passing through the skyscraper section.
    • Despite this, one of Classic Sonic's Challenge Acts takes place around dawn.
  • While Modern Sonic runs down the skyscraper mid-way through the level, Classic Sonic appears to go inside the same building, as they both share the same features.
  • The remnants of the actual roads from Speed Highway are used in the battle against Perfect Chaos, just like in the original Sonic Adventure.
  • This is the only stage in the Dreamcast era not to be the beginning stage in its original game.

  • On the Chao in Space billboards in this stage, multiple Sonic characters are listed as appearing in the film. Some characters' names were misspelled:
  • While the cars in the original Speed Highway were modern designs, the cars in this version are all Volkswagen-esque vehicles.
  • In White Space, just behind Cream and Cheese, there is a "Chao in Space 4" movie poster.
  • Both Sonics seem to go through Speed Highway at different times of the day. Classic Sonic seems to run through the highway just after dusk, while Modern Sonic runs through it during the last minutes of night to the beginning of dawn.
  • Vector the Crocodile makes at least two cameos in this level; first as a big, green neon sign reading "Club Vector", and second as a road sign showing the direction to "Vector Avenue".
  • The stage 4-2 (and its Final Horizons remix level 4-G) from Sonic Frontiers feature original level design, but feature elements comparable to Speed Highway Act 2.
