Spikebonkers are rather awkward-looking robots, designed to be more effective as attacker badniks than Shellcracker. Two glaring photoreceptor eyes are used for vision, which are placed below the dome on top of its head. Its pointed underside has a spiked mace ball orbiting it. A small pack is connected to the back.
Spikebonkers hover above the floor, moving slowly from side-to-side, its spiked ball orbiting the Spikebonker's pointed underside. When the player approaches, Spikebonker fires the ball towards them. However, the spiked ball will only travel a short distance and then return to the Spikebonker like a boomerang, so that it can be fired again. At the right time, the player can destroy it with Spin Jump.
Sonic the Comic
Spikebonkers also appeared as the Death Egg's security system in Sonic the Comic. Sonic battled them when he infiltrated Level 19, Sector 2. He seemed very unimpressed with their design and particularly their ridiculous name. The Spikebonkers did eventually bring Sonic before Robotnik, but Sonic insisted that he hadn't been beaten and that they had merely helped him find Robotnik.
