The Spin Hammer Attack (回転ハンマー,Kaiten Hanmā?, lit. "Spinning Hammer"), also called the Revolving Hammer Attack, is a move used by Amy Rose which first appeared in Sonic Adventure. When performing this move, Amy twirls around with her Piko Piko Hammer.
When performing the Spin Hammer Attack, Amy stays in one spot and begins twirling around with her Piko Piko Hammer outstretched at high speeds, like a spinning top, allowing her to destroy any enemies that enter her attack radius. While whirling, Amy's Piko Piko Hammer leaves a trail of pink hearts and afterimages.
The Spin Hammer Attack first appeared in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut. In this game, Amy must have obtained the Warrior Feather to perform it. In gameplay, the player can perform the Spin Hammer Attack by holding down the Action button and spinning the analog stick in a circle. The attack can be stopped by letting go of the Action button.
The downside to this move is that if it is performed for too long, Amy will get dizzy and temporarily lose coordination, causing her to stagger around uncontrollably for a few seconds, regardless of the player's controls. Another downside is that this move has a small attack radius and since the player is rooted to the place when executing it, it is difficult to use. However, the radius can be increased by obtaining the Long Hammer.
In Sonic Shuffle, the Spin Hammer Attack is named Revolving Hammer Attack and is Amy's Special Attack Ability. In gameplay, it gives Amy five fixed damage points if she draws an S Card in battle.
In the Sonic Boom franchise, the Spin Hammer Attack is a technique used by Amy Rose in the video game Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. In addition to dealing damage, this version of the attack does not make Amy dizzy, allows her to move around and as well block projectiles.
Despite being a mandatory upgrade for Amy, there is never a point where Amy is required to perform the Spin Hammer Attack to progress through the game, similar to Tails' Rapid Tails Attack.
