Stardust Speedway (スターダストスピードウェイ[1] Sutādasuto Supīdowei?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an urban region on Little Planet that was once conquered by the evil Dr. Eggman when the doctor seized the planet for his world conquest plans. It is best known for being the site of the first clash between Sonic the Hedgehog and Metal Sonic.

Description[]

Stardust Speedway is a city on Little Planet, near Palmtree Panic and the Wacky Workbench. It is notable for its neon light colors during night. Numerous golden highways adorned with instruments, signs, gimmicks, and Time Warp signs are also found in the city, while some buildings and lights are seen in the background. Also, what appears to be a factory under construction is seen below those highways. Somewhere in the city, a Dr. Eggman-themed statue can be seen being under construction.

In the past, Stardust Speedway used to be a Greco-Roman-styled city, complete with an acropolis, gardens, and surrounding towns. The highways were green and filled with vines and other types of vegetation. In addition, what appeared to be a lake was seen underneath them. There was also a dark-colored palace in the same place where the Eggman-styled statue is currently located.

When Dr. Eggman re-wrote the future to his own image, the city was the same as in the present, but it was polluted and ruined with some red storms constantly destroying the place. The highways appeared jade green due to age, and their instruments showed some signs of damage. The statue was now totally finished. A gray amusement park also appeared in some part of the city, but it did not seem to be working. After Sonic the Hedgehog re-wrote history, Stardust Speedway was no longer destined to be a ruined city in the future, but an amusement park in a bay full of lights, colors and attractions, where fun and leisure dominated the place. The highways appear in a lavender color with plaques of hearts on them. There are also many support gilders on them. The Eggman statue has been replaced by a lavender cathedral/castle.

History[]

Past[]

Stardust Speedway once used to be a Greek/Roman-styled city with surrounding towns and lesser lights near a lake. Over time however, it was turned into a modern and colorful city with hundreds of buildings and twisting speedways.

Sonic the Hedgehog CD[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, the deranged Dr. Robotnik invaded Little Planet and its regions, which included Stardust Speedway. He installed robot teleporters in the past and infested the city with Badniks. He also put some Metal Sonic holograms to terrorize the local Animals. With this, he managed to conquer the future of the planet and write history to his own image. However, the doctor's influence over time turned the city into a wasteland as a result of the constant thunderstorms caused by the pollution on the planet.

Sonic racing against Metal Sonic in the good future of Stardust Speedway, from the 2011 remaster of Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

When Sonic the Hedgehog arrived on the planet, he began collecting the Time Stones and re-writing the history of Little Planet, reverting Robotnik's effects in Stardust Speedway. After Metal Sonic kidnapped Amy Rose in Collision Chaos, Robotnik left her tied somewhere in the highways, and waited for Sonic to show himself up to rescue the girl. After Sonic arrived, fixing the future and turning it into a amusement park, Metal Sonic challenged Sonic to a race, with Amy being the end of it. The hedgehog won, destroying Metal Sonic and freeing Amy. The hedgehogs later left Stardust Speedway to defeat Robotnik in Metallic Madness. After this, Little Planet was definitely freed from Robotnik's control, leaving Stardust Speedway to have a peaceful destiny.

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, an incarnation of Stardust Speedway from somewhere in spacetime served as the site where Metal Sonic challenged Classic Sonic to a battle. After the hedgehog won, the robot gave him a Chaos Emerald.

After the Time Eater was destroyed, Stardust Speedway was presumably restored to its proper state in the timeline.

In Sonic Mania, sometime after the events of the Angel Island incident, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were warped by Dr. Eggman to the past of Stardust Speedway from Press Garden through the Phantom Ruby. Making their way through the ancient city, the trio overcame a Hotaru Hi-Watt and used the Time Warp to travel to the present, where they confronted Metal Sonic. After the heroes defeated the robot, however, Eggman sent them to Hydrocity through the ruby.

Sonic Mania Plus[]

In Sonic Mania Plus, after Sonic's return from the future War to Take Back the Planet, he, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray were transported by Dr. Eggman to the past of Stardust Speedway once more through the Phantom Ruby. After overcoming another Hotaru Hi-Watt, the group returned to the present and faced Metal Sonic. When the heroes defeated the robot, however, the deranged doctor sent then to Hydrocity.

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Stardust Speedway Zone was an area within Collision Chaos Zone - a Zone created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik and used as a trap for Sonic the Hedgehog, in which Amy Rose served as bait. In Stardust Speedway Zone, Sonic defeated Mecha Sonic during a race and saved Tails and Amy.

After the Super Genesis Wave rewrote reality, Stardust Speedway became much more similar to its game counterpart, being a Zone under Dr. Eggman's influence on Little Planet and having the same role it had in Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

Trivia[]

  • Stardust Speedway is one of the Zones with the most different versions of its music that are all remixed from the tracks of its debut game, mainly the bad future themes of both JP and US soundtracks.
    • In Sonic Generations, there are two versions: the default Metal Sonic boss theme (a remix of "Stardust Speedway "B" Mix", with some parts of "Stardust Speedway", both from the the Japanese soundtrack of Sonic the Hedgehog CD), and an unlockable track listed as Stardust Speedway Zone, which is a remix of "Stardust Speedway - Bad Future" from the American soundtrack of Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
    • In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, another remix of "Stardust Speedway "B" Mix" appears in the Metal Sonic race in the Death Egg mk.II Zone, which also incorporates the new arrangements brought in from the track used in the Metal Sonic boss fight in Sonic Generations.
    • In Sonic Mania and Sonic Mania Plus, there are three remixes of themes from the Japanese soundtrack in Sonic the Hedgehog CD: "Stardust Speedway Zone (Act 1)", the theme in Act 1, is based on "Stardust Speedway "P" Mix" from Sonic the Hedgehog CD, "Stardust Speedway Zone (Act 2)", from Act 2, is based on "Stardust Speedway" and "Stardust Speedway "G" Mix", and the "Vs. Metal Sonic" theme is based on "Stardust Speedway "B" Mix".
