The Sun Tablets are ancient tablets that appear in the PS2/Wii version of Sonic Unleashed, and are needed to proceed in the story.

Created in ancient times, Sun Tablets serve as a method of opening doors with sun symbols on their respective Gaia Gates which lead to certain areas in the continent. In gameplay, these tablets unlock the continent's Day Stages where Sonic the Hedgehog is playable. Despite the fact there are seven Gaia Gates spread across the world, only six Sun Tablets exist, since Mazuri lacks a Day Stage.

Each Sun Tablet is designated to a specific Gaia Gate, and as such, a Sun Tablet cannot be used for any continent's Gaia Gate other than its own.

In the game's story, most of the Sun Tablets lie in the possession of a person from the village. These people are usually the guardians of the Gaia Temples or someone associated with them. In order to obtain a Sun Tablet for the local Gaia Gate, Sonic must speak to a specific person found in the same continent, and they will hand it over to him. In some cases, obtaining the Sun Tablet will reveal the local Gaia Gate on the map.
