Super Mecha Sonic Mark II,[1] also known as simply Super Mecha Sonic[2] (スーパーメカソニック Sūpā Meka Sonikku?), is a transformation that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the Super State of Mecha Sonic Mk. II, achieved by harnessing the power of the Master Emerald. Mecha Sonic assumed this form in an attempt to defeat Knuckles the Echidna during an attempt to steal the Master Emerald, only to be defeated for good.
Appearance[]
Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II has an identical appearance to its base form with the only difference that its usual blue color now pulses into a golden-orange color, nearly resembling Super Sonic.
History[]
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]
In Sonic & Knuckles and the full lock-on game, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Mecha Sonic Mk. II transformed into Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II using the Master Emerald while fighting Knuckles in Sky Sanctuary Zone, as his final battle. However, it was eventually defeated when Knuckles exploited its vulnerability during its recharge phases. After the fight, Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II returned to its original form and shut down, leaving it to fall down and ultimately explode with the collapsing ruins of the Sky Sanctuary Zone.
Powers and abilities[]
As Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II, Mecha Sonic Mk. II's innate abilities are greatly increased. It can fly thanks to the reinforced jet engine on its back, and it can also hover in mid-air without it. In addition, it is invulnerable to all manners of harm.
Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II's core offensive move is a Spin Attack-derived technique where it curls into a concussive ball or cutting disk and directs itself at its targets. Additionally, Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II can channel energies that can be fired in the form of a round energy blast, and is able to shoot rings around itself that deal damage to enemies.
Weakness[]
Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II is unable to sustain its Super State for very long, causing it to revert back to normal rather quickly. As such, it requires the Master Emerald's power to regularly recharge itself and power back up again.
Battle[]
Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II is the second and final boss of Sky Sanctuary Zone when playing as Knuckles. It is the tenth and final overall boss of Sonic & Knuckles, and the twenty-second and final boss of Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Knuckles' stories of said games. The battle is encountered directly after the previous battle against Mecha Sonic Mk. II is completed.
While it can only be fought by Knuckles under normal circumstances in both games, it can also be fought by Sonic or Tails (together or individually) in Sonic 3 & Knuckles if the Level Select and Debug Mode cheats are both enabled. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy via the use of said codes.
Boss guide[]
Like the previous Mecha Sonic Mk. II battle, the battle still takes place on a flat stage with Angel Island appearing in the background. The battle commences with Mecha Sonic Mk. II assuming its Super State just as the player's character appears on-screen. The player is unable to harm Mecha Sonic Mk. II while it is in its Super State.
Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II can use any of the following attacks:
- Spinning into the player character's current position
- Ramming into the player character's current position at full speed
- Firing three charged balls of energy at the player's position.
After using the energy ball attack, Mecha Sonic Mk. II will lose its Super State and drop down before spinning into the Master Emerald in order to recharge again. The player is presented with two opportunities to attack Mecha Sonic Mk. II; the first being when it drops down before spinning and the second being it jumping onto the Master Emerald. The player cannot damage Mecha Sonic Mk. II while it is drawing power from the Master Emerald and attempting to do so while this is occurring will damage the player.
Between each attack, Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II will constantly hover at the top of the screen while moving horizontally. Halfway through the battle when Mecha Sonic Mk. II receives enough hits however, the attack pattern completely changes; Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II hovers at the top of the screen while slowly following the player's character, stopping to either fire a series of thick damaging rings in different trajectories, or drop down while momentarily powering down for a second, giving the player a small window of opportunity to hit Mecha Sonic Mk. II before it powers up again.
The player must land a total of eight hits on Mecha Sonic Mk. II to defeat it.
Trivia[]
- Because this boss was only ever intended to be fought by Knuckles, if the player enables Debug Mode and uses Sonic to fight him, the ending cutscene will have a glitch where a blue Knuckles will appear riding on the Tornado. However, in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, if the last accessed save file had all seven Super Emeralds collected before playing the act as Sonic, the ending cutscene will play out as normal.
- If the player finishes this fight as Tails via Debug Mode, the same glitch occurs in the ending cutscene though Tails' tails will also be present throughout most of the cutscene.
- Also, since Sonic and Tails fought Dr. Robotnik in their story, he will replace Eggrobo during the intro cutscene of the battle, causing Mecha Sonic to humorously eliminate the doctor when he curls up to destroy them.
- In the original versions of Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, during the start of the act, Knuckles can still jump after being ejected from the teleporter (within a narrow window), albeit Knuckles won't curl up. If Knuckles then immediately glides from the peak of the jump and gets captured by Eggrobo as intended, this creates a glitch at the start of this battle. When Mecha Sonic Mk. II jumps onto the emerald in order to transform for the first time, it will instead fall vertically through the stage, only to then reappear on top of the stage (in the same column as the Master Emerald) and repeat this numerous times, falling and reappearing faster each subsequent time. The glitch will eventually be corrected after falling enough times, where Mecha Sonic will transform into its Super form as intended.
- Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II's ring-shooting attack in this boss fight was possibly based on a scrapped ability for Sonic found in the November 1993 Prototype of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which allowed Sonic to shoot Rings at enemies. It should be noted that the other scrapped ability found in the prototype - a Drop Dash-like maneuver - also bears some resemblance to an attack used by Mecha Sonic Mk. II during his regular boss fight.
- In the original release of Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II would always use its energy ball move if it was on the far left or right side of the player. In the Sega Mega Drive Classics and Sonic Origins re-release versions of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, however, it now uses the move no matter where it was.

IDW Publishing[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Super Mecha Sonic Mk. II was mentioned by Sonic while he was mocking the Heavy King that Mecha Sonic Mark II could at least turn "Super", thought all it had was the Master Emerald.[3]
Trivia[]
- Mecha Sonic Mk. II is the first villain to manage to achieve a Super State, the first inorganic character to ever use a Super State, and the first character to trigger a transformation by use of the Master Emerald (the next would be Imperator Ix, over a decade later). Classic Metal Sonic would also attempt to trigger a transformation via the Master Emerald in Sonic Mania Adventures, although Knuckles knocked him away before he could succeed.
