The Tails Vent,[1] also known as the Air Vent,[2] is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a large fan that Miles "Tails" Prower can use to ride updrafts.

Description[]

The Tails Vent is a large fan creating a straight gust of wind from its fan. In most cases, they are positioned on the ground, but they can also be set on walls and roofs

In gameplay, the Tails Vent serves as a way for the player to traverse the environment using Tails' Hover ability. By using Hover inside these vents' drafts, Tails will move in the direction of said drafts. For example, using Hover within an upward draft will make Tails rise into the air, while Tails Vents on the walls will push Tails in the direction of the their sideways draft. This way, Tails can access areas out of jumping range or cross otherwise impassible gaps. Ceasing Hover or moving outside the drafts will halt Tails' momentum though. Also, a network of vents placed on walls and roofs so their drafts intersects will form midair paths that a hovering Tails automatically moves through.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric[]

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, these vents are referred to as Tails Vents.[1] In this game, the Tails Vents have a thick yellow and black-striped plating surrounding their fan. They also emit a yellow light column from their opening. Exclusive to Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, the Tails Vents can sometimes move around on their own to help Tails keep his altitude when moving around in midair. Others can first be activated after completing a puzzle with Buttons or the Enerbeam.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal[]

In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, the Tails Vents are referred to as Air Vents.[2] Unlike their armored design in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, the Air Vents have no plating in this game. Instead, they have a blue and yellow ring around them and a grid covering the fan.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice[]

In Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, the Tails Vents have the same design they had in Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. This gimmick is particularly essential when facing Sticky Situation, where the player has to fly between vanishing Tails Vents while avoided obstacles to stay above a tar pit.
