Appears under the moon, disappears under the sun.
— Description of the Talisman, "Sonic's Scream Test"
The Talisman is an object that appears in the anime series Sonic X and its comic series published by Archie Comics. It is a mystical statuette that keeps King Boom Boo and his minions imprisoned in their own dimension.
The Talisman is a hourglass-shaped stone statue with the figure of a sun on one side and a crescent moon with a star in the center on the other (the star was removed from the English dub).
The Talisman possesses mystical powers that lets it imprison or release King Boom Boo and his minions from their pocket dimension. Its effects are tied to the symbol on the Talisman that is facing up. If the sun symbol is up, it weakens the ghosts and keeps them sealed in their pocket dimension, while the moon symbol will set them free. However, the moon symbol works in the opposite manner when the Talisman is put on its pedestal, resulting in the ghosts returning to their pocket dimension.
Originally resting at an ancient castle, the Talisman was discovered by the crew shooting a movie starring Lindsey Thorndyke. While filming, a cameraman moved the Talisman from its pedestal, awakening the Booms and setting them loose. When the Talisman was found by Sonic, he gave it to Chris as the Booms took him away, hoping they could use it to imprison the ghosts. As Amy and Chris tracked the ghosts, the Talisman proved useful in repelling them.
Upon finding the holding place for the ghosts' prisoners, King Boom Boo manipulated Amy into freeing him from his pocket dimension with the Talisman. However, Chris then used the Talisman to free Sonic from his prison. After rescuing all the prisoners and fleeing from the ghosts, Chris returned the Talisman to its original position on its pedestal, imprisoning the ghosts again.
After the incident at the castle, the Talisman was taken to and placed in the trophy room in one of the Thorndykes' summer houses on a private island. As King Boom Boo and his minions began invading the island, Chris and Cream used the Talisman to ward off the ghosts, until they found King Boom Boo and made a deal with him: if the Talisman was returned to the castle before sunrise, he and his minions would return to their world. Sonic took over after that and brought the Talisman back to its pedestal in time, ending the ghosts' invasion.
- The reason for the star being removed from the crescent moon in the American airing was likely because that 4kids did not want to offend the Islam/Muslim community. However, unlike the English dub of the anime series, the Archie Comics kept the star on the Talisman in the Sonic X comics.
- The idea of an hourglass having sun and moon symbols on opposite ends would later be re-used for the time-altering hourglasses in Sonic Unleashed.
