A major issue of that comic run is that Archie used elements of Sonic SATAM which was more like a recreation of Sonic series since DiC once again didn't cared to learn more about the games which they would adapt and used way too much creative input of their own.
So, Amy ended up being unused in these cartoons anyway, so they added her in the comics as a child, but then made her wish to become older.
Considering that she came before Knuckles it felt rather awful how they treated her in these comics.
Frankly, it was best to use content of the games rather than use assets from a cartoon made by people who disrespect other company's IP.
After all, Archie had to make a lot of improvise during the adaptation of the Chaos Saga since Gamma was meant to be an "animal powered" robot unit.
