The Crazy (ザ・クレイジー Za Kureijī?) is a recurring Board type Extreme Gear in the Sonic Riders series. It is unique for being the only Extreme Gear that runs on Ring Energy (other than the Chaos Emerald). It is based on B.D. Joe's personal Chevy Impala from the Crazy Taxi series.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Riders[]

This Gear uses Rings instead of Air.

— Description, Sonic Riders[1]

Description[]

The Crazy made its first appearance in Sonic Riders. According to its profile, it uses Rings instead of Air. It is unlocked after achieving a Gold Rank on all the missions in the game and can thereafter be bought at the shop for two thousand Rings from the beginning of the game.

Being based on the Chevy Impala Taxi from the Crazy Taxi series, The Crazy's design is based on a flattened out version of said vehicle, but without the wheels. Also, in place of the seats, The Crazy has a orange and purple striped foot panel on which the rider can stand.

Abilities and traits[]

As a Board-type Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders, The Crazy is well-balanced in its attributes with average statistics and is suited for general riding.

Unlike almost every other Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders, however, The Crazy does not use Air as fuel, but instead uses Rings. This means that the player's Ring counter serves as The Crazy's "Air Tank", while The Crazy's actual Air Tank serve no purpose. The player's Ring count will decrease over the duration of a race and should the player run of Rings, The Crazy will run out of fuel, forcing the player to run around on foot, until the player can obtain at least one Ring from the race course.

When starting a race with The Crazy, the players start out with fifty Rings, allowing the players to immediately start riding on the Crazy. When racing normally, The Crazy consumes one Ring per second. However, using Air Slide causes The Crazy to consume Rings more rapidly. Using an Air Boost or a Tornado with The Crazy as well cost seventeen Rings for each usage. Also, because this Extreme Gear relies on Rings, the players cannot level up.

When performing Trick Actions or other Air-fueling actions while riding The Crazy, the player will not gain more Rings as fuel, but when attacking opponents, they gain seventeen Rings. The Crazy will also not consume Rings when using Speed Type/Flight Type shortcuts, riding turbulence, performing a Trick Action, or when in automated areas. Also, when opening Item boxes that would normally contain Air to fuel the Extreme Gear, the players will gain ten Rings instead. If the player falls off the course or travels backwards for too long, they will respawn with fifty Rings.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity[]

A greedy cabby's soul inhabits this gear that runs on Rings instead of GP.

Description, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity[2]

Description[]

The Crazy returned later in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. According to its profile, a greedy cabby's soul inhabits it. It can be purchased at the shop for 4,200 Rings.

In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, The Crazy maintains much of the same design it had in Sonic Riders, but is not as flat as it was in Sonic Riders. Also, it has what appear to be hover units in place of wheels.

Abilities and traits[]

As a Board type Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, The Crazy is well-balanced in its attributes with overall average statistics and is suited for general riding.

The Crazy retains many of the same traits that it had in Sonic Riders, meaning that The Crazy runs on Rings instead of Gravity Points (GP). Likewise, the player cannot gain Rings by performing actions that would normally grant GP and The Crazy's actual GP Gauge serves no gameplay purpose. While riding The Crazy, it will consume one Ring per second when racing normally and will force the player to go on foot when they have zero Rings. Performing moves such as Gravity Control and Gravity Dive also causes The Crazy to consume the player's Rings more rapidly.

Unlike in Sonic Riders, the player riding The Crazy will not start the race with a set number of Rings, meaning the player will run around on foot with The Crazy until they collect any amount of Rings. In this state though, the player can still access Springs and other shortcuts that would require the Attack.

Sonic Free Riders[]

The soul of an infamous cabbie haunts the collector's Gear. Unlike most Gear, it runs on Rings, not Air.

Description, Sonic Free Riders[3]

Description[]

The Crazy made another reappearance in Sonic Free Riders. According to its profile in this game, it is a collector's Gear that is haunted by the soul of an infamous cabbie. It can be purchased from the shop for 1,750 Rings.

In Sonic Free Riders, The Crazy possesses a design nearly identical to that it had in Sonic Riders, except that its foot panel is colored black instead of purple.

Abilities and traits[]

As a Board type Extreme Gear in Sonic Free Riders, The Crazy is, like in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, well-balanced in its attributes with average statistics and is suited for general riding.

Just like in Sonic Riders, The Crazy is fueled by Rings instead of Air in Sonic Free Riders, and consumes one Ring per second when riding it normally. Likewise, the player cannot gain Rings from performing any action that would normally grant Air to fuel The Crazy and performing a Kick Dash costs twenty-five Rings. However, unlike the two previous titles, the player can ride on The Crazy at all times, even if they run out of Rings. In normal races, the player starts with thirty Rings. When crouching down for a jump that normally costs Air, it will consume Rings at a slightly higher rate and this action cannot be performed if the player has zero Rings. The player cannot level up while riding The Crazy. If the player is attacked by Item Box Action Items while riding The Crazy, they will not lose Rings. It can be equipped with two Gear Parts.
