The History of Sonic the Hedgehog (French: L'Histoire de Sonic the Hedgehog[1]) is a retrospective book about the Sonic the Hedgehog series that was published in France by Pix'n Love Editions in May 2012, to conmemorate the over twenty years of the history of the franchise. The book compiles information from third-party sources to cover the history of the series up until the release of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and also includes descriptions of every game and character, as well as interviews with Sonic Team staff. It also received help from Sega of Japan[1] and various members of the company's other divisions. An English translation by UDO Entertainment was released in September 2013.

Blurb[]

Relive the crazy adventure of one of the most famous mascots in video game history! Born in 1991 on Mega Drive, Sonic, the legendary hero of SEGA, was immediately adopted by several million players and saw himself propelled in a flash to the rank of superstar.[1]
Produced in collaboration with SEGA of Japan, this unique and official work retraces twenty years of history and glory during which Sonic knew how to thrill all the players who tried to tame him! Twenty years of pleasure, of course, but also of technological innovations and playful creativity.[1]
Through anecdotes, interviews, artworks and unpublished drawings, this book will reveal the hidden face of the hedgehog and open the doors to its atypical universe and overflowing with imagination.[1]

Pix'n Love announced that the book became available starting April 25, 2012. However, various setbacks delayed the official publication of the book. There were also some licensing issues with some of the book’s contents, according to a translator working on the English version.

On August 3, 2013, a few members of Sonic Team and SpecialEffect, a British Charity, signed one of the books during the Summer Of Sonic event. That signed book was auctioned on eBay with the intention that all of its profits would go to charity. The bid ended on 24 August 2013 at 10:39 AM EDT (2:39 PM UTC) at US$233.91 or £150.

The book was published on Amazon.com on September 6, 2013 after a one-year delay. However, it was published as a hardcover.
