The Pit
Next level >>

The Pit (ザ・ピット Za Pitto?) is the fourth area of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.[1] Surrounded by a jungle, the Pit is a polluted industrial dig site for Lyric the Last Ancient and his Destruction Troops. Roaming the underground in search for the Chaos Crystals are Lyric's Driller Worms. It can be entered after completing River Rush.

While Lyric's forces were on a mad hunt for the Chaos Crystals, Team Sonic came to the Pit to find its Crystal. After going their separate ways and reuniting, the team found and took the Crystal from a Driller Worm.

Description[]

The Pit is an extremely contradicting environment. The outer landscape is a tropical and life-rich jungle in a distant mountainous archipelago, where large palm trees and grass grow in abundance on top of rocky cliffs. Ancient buildings resembling watchtowers can also be seen on each island. At the beginning, the remains of a crashed Riptide can be seen.

The central landscape of the Pit is a nightmarish dig site of dark violet dirt and rocks, and canyon-like passages with no flora (excluding dead tree stubs and roots). The area is also extremely polluted, having pools of green waste flowing through it. The underground holds as well large tunnels made from Driller Worms and an underground complex from the Ancients. In the center of the Pit lies its namesake; an immense and vast artificial hole near the size of a valley.

The Pit's main section is heavily industrialized and fortress-like, though much of it is not up to date and rusty. Scaffolds and supports made from different metals align the walls. There are also metal fences, mine carts, mine tracks and digging machinery everywhere. The Pit's center is the most industrialized area and resembles a processing plant with pipes, gears, tanks and smelting forges of enormous proportions, along with conveyor belts, heavy duty machinery and lava pits.

Story[]

About a thousand years ago, the Ancients hid away their red Chaos Crystal in the Pit so that Lyric could not find it.

A millennium later, Lyric send his Driller Worms to the Pit to find the Chaos Crystal. Not long after, Team Sonic came for the Crystal as well, after crashing in the outskirts in the Riptide. To cover more ground, Tails and Amy continued up along the ridge while Sonic and Knuckles cut through the dig site. Along the way, Sonic and Knuckles had some quality time together and an encounter with the Driller Worms, before they met up with Amy and Tails again. Just then, a large fan suddenly blew the team down a route to the Chaos Crystal. However, a Driller Worm suddenly appeared and took the Crystal, forcing Team Sonic to defeat the robot and reclaim the Crystal.

A while later, Lyric and Dr. Eggman found the remains of the Driller Worm. While Eggman feared retaliation from Lyric, as the doctor had claimed he killed Team Sonic, the snake remained silent, much to Eggman's relief.

Gameplay[]

In the Pit, the player has to travel through the dig site and into the heart of the area. Like other areas in the game, the Pit includes speed level sections, where the player runs down a long path with speed-enhancing gimmicks while avoiding hazardous obstacles, and as well slower-paced areas for exploration and combat. It also features standard puzzles that the player must solve with the Enerbeam mechanic and Buttons.

Despite all characters being playable, the Pit only has gimmicks for Sonic and Knuckles' character actions. These gimmicks include Spin Ramps, a Spin Ball and Air Targets for Sonic, and Climbable Walls and Ceilings and diggable ground for Knuckles. Hazardous obstacles in the Pit include burning furnace floors, small surface sockets that spew out damage-inducing fire in different intervals, glowing shredders that in some instances move, and bottomless waste floods and lava pits. In the case of the lava pits however, there are times where they can be frozen by pressing the the appropriate Buttons, thereby making the lava pits safe to walk across. There are also ground-bound mines that detonate either when attacked or with delay when approached. Additionally, there are moving conveyor belts that make it more difficult for the player to navigate, and can pull them into fire. There are also various destructible rocks in the quarry, which sometimes have Robot Scrap Chests hidden behind them.

Overview[]

The Pit 2

The first speed section in the Pit.

The first part of the level starts out with the player in control of all of Team Sonic. Ahead is the entrance to a speed section. To enter it, pass through the Boost Ring around the road ahead. The player will then begin moving down a long road, with the characters running to the top of a large cliff. Along the road are also obstacles to avoid. Further down the speed section, the characters will also run down a vertical wall, and then through numerous loops and along a few Ener-Rails. As the speed section enters a forest, a fork in the road that is marked with Bounce Pads and Boost Pads appears. Regardless of which path the player takes though, the two roads will eventually remerge, after which the characters will jump of the road, ending the speed section.

Landing in the forest, the player has to follow the forest path ahead for a short while before entering the main section of the Pit. There, a short cutscene will play. After the cutscene, the player will be left with only Sonic and Knuckles to control. These characters will then start out on the path ahead. From there, follow the road down into a lower section of the Pit with fences blocking the path forward. Here, the player must defeat a number of Destruction Troops, including the new Driller Snakes. Afterward, the player must pull some nearby latches with the Enerbeam to lower a minecart with a Bounce Pad on top of it down on the track. Push then this minecart forward by hitting the Button on its rear. Once the minecart comes to a stop in front of the fence, use its Bounce Pad to get over the fence. On the other side of the fence however, the player will attacked by more Destruction Troops. In addition, watch out for mines on the ground nearby. After defeating the enemies, pull the Enerbeam latch next to the fence's opening to make its gate open. Push then the minecart further down its track by pressing the Button on its rear again.

The Pit 9

The fight with the Crab Excavator.

After the minecart comes to a stop on a metal platform in front of a waste pool, use the Bounce Pad on it to get to the platform above. From here, the player can either take the path on the left using the Spin Ramp with Sonic or the path on the right using the Climbable Wall with Knuckles. Taking the left path has Sonic follow some scaffolds and across a flipping platform to reach a Tube that will take him across the waste pool. Taking the right path on the other hand has Knuckles climb up to a small maze of Climbable Walls. At the end, he has to burrow into the ground and then jump out of it to reach a Tube that will take him across the waste pool. Once on the other side of the waste pool, press the nearby Button to lower the bridge across the waste pool. At the end of this bridge, use then the Enerbeam to pull the metal platform with the minecart on it across the waste pool. Afterward, press the Button on the minecart to make it move over to the cliff ahead. Once it is there, use the Bounce Pad on top of the minecart to scale the cliff. Once up there, the player has to take out the Gunslinger Troopers here. Tear then off the faceplate on the Crab Excavator with the Enerbeam to engage it in battle. After defeating the Crab Excavator by tossing incoming Destruction Troops into its drill with the Enerbeam and then watching a cutscene, the player must enter the hole underneath the Crab Excavator. After a few moments in darkness, the player then has to defeat some enemies, including the new Swordsman Guards and Blaster Guards, in a room with a Checkpoint. Once the enemies have been dealt with, a Driller Worm will pass by the room, creating a tunnel for the player to pass through. At the end of the tunnel, the player has to destroy a rock wall with Knuckles. After that, a cutscene will play.

Once the cutscene is over, the player will find themselves in a 2.5D area. From here, proceed to the right. Once at a lava tank, press the Button above it to cool off and solidify the lava. From there, the player will enter a maze-like section with flamethrowers, glowing shredders on flipping platforms and movement gimmicks. The player can also move around the various sections of the maze, marked with numbers on the walls, by jumping into the appropriate Tube. At the end of this section, the characters will be led down a path by gimmicks until they arrive in front of a gate guarded by Destruction Troops. After the enemies have been destroyed, open the gate by pulling the latches on it with the Enerbeam. On the other side of the gate, climb the small cliff ahead and press the Button on top of it to close the lid on a lava tank nearby and create a path marked with a Boost Pad. Upon entering this path, the player will arrive in a short speed section. At the end, the player will then be deposited in another arena with a Checkpoint, a lava pit on the left side, and Destruction Troops. Here, the player will also be introduced to the Furnace Brute. After destroying all the enemies, an Enerbeam latch will be revealed. Pull it out with the Enerbeam to reveal a minecart with a Bounce Pad on top of it. Use this Bounce Pad to go to the area above. Go then to area on the left side of the platform to find a Spin Ball, which Sonic has to use. Before he can use it however, the player has to destroy the rocks on the wall in front of the Spin Ball that is jamming the gears with Knuckles using the Climbable Walls. Once the rocks are gone, Sonic can use the Spin Ball without problems to lower a pair of Tubes and unlock a new path in the previous area by closing another lava tank. Use the revealed Tubes to go back to the previous area and use the unveiled path to proceed.

The Pit 17

The giant wheel in the second maze section of the Pit.

After passing through a short speed section, the player will arrive in another maze-like area with flamethrowers and glowing shredders. Here, there are Air Targets for Sonic to get through some corridors with. Like before, there are also Tubes for fast-travel between the different floors in this area. At the very bottom of this area is also an Ener-Rail that leads into a hidden room. Regardless, in order to get through this section, follow the path ahead when arriving here and enter the corridor with the Air Targets. After then passing a conveyor belt and dropping down from above, proceed through the upper path on the right and pres the first Button the characters come across to open up for a path right behind them. At the end of this path, the player must press another Button to make a wheel with glowing shredders start turning. Backtrack then to the previous button and use the Zip Target ahead of it to reach a Bounce Pad. Once the Bounce Pad has taken the player to the next section, wait for an opening in the turning wheel to appear and go through it to land on the plaform inside it. When the hole in the wheel has then moved over to the left side, go through it to reach a Bounce Pad that will take the characters to another brief speed section. After that, they will arrive in another arena with a Checkpoint and Destruction Troops. After the latter have been taken out, pull the gate open with the Enerbeam and the latches on it. On the path ahead, the player then has to break the casing covering the red Buttons. Once freed, press the Buttons to open the gate blocking the path and trigger another cutscene. After the cutscene, the player will then find themselves in another speed section with control over all of Team Sonic. Here, Driller Worms in the background will dig through the terrain and dump rocks onto the road for the player to avoid. Other obstacles encountered here include carts with hot coal. At the end of the speed section, the player then has a boss battle with a Driller Worm to reclaim the red Chaos Crystal.
