The Thorndyke Mansion, also known as the Thorndyke Estate[1] or the Thorndyke Residence,[2] is a location that appears in the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics. It is the luxurious home of Christopher Thorndyke, his parents, Chuck Thorndyke, and their live-in domestic workers Ella and Mr. Tanaka. When Sonic the Hedgehog and most of his friends were stranded on Earth, they took residence at this mansion for the majority of their stay.

Description[]

The Thorndyke Mansion is a building with several luxurious details covering several acres of land. The mansion itself is a two-story white building with several black windows, balconies, a red roof and its front door area is sheltered with four pillars supporting the shelter onto the main road via steps. A small pond is located in the middle of the front door area. The mansion is surrounded by a large flat turf embarked with small trees and hedges and there is a pathway leading to the outdoor swimming pools and a sheltered pathway leading to the garage.

The mansion's garage is the area where Sonic's friends and Chuck normally hang around. Beneath it, Chuck has a built-in secret laboratory where most of his creations are constructed at such as the X Tornado.[3] The road leading from the garage is styled like an airport's runaway with palm trees located on its sideways where the Tornado 2 and X Tornado usually take off along.

Anime[]

Past[]

Years ago, Chris and his parents, Lindsey and Nelson Thorndyke, settled into the mansion. Despite his luxurious lifestyle, Chris felt very lonely since his parents were constantly busy because of their careers, leaving him alone at the mansion with Chuck, Ella and Mr. Tanaka, though they were able to occasionally visit him.[4]

New World Saga[]

After outrunning Station Square's police forces and the Speed Team, Sonic the Hedgehog first discovered the Thorndyke Mansion when he flew through the air, only to land right in one of the mansion's outdoor pools. As Sonic tried to escape the pool, he was rescued by Chris and was allowed to stay at the mansion.[5] Later on, Sonic saved Tails, Cream, Cheese and Amy following their arrival on Earth, and they all agreed to settle into the Thorndyke Mansion as their new residence on Earth.[6][7][8]

Initially, due to their special characteristics, Sonic and his friends had to remain hidden from Mr. Tanaka and Ella so they mainly resided in Chuck's laboratory when they were not out stopping Dr. Eggman from achieving world domination.[7][8][9]

One day, Mr. Tanaka told Chris that his parents were coming to visit, feeling both excited and nervous since he had to remind Sonic and his friends to stay hidden before heading for school. During the day, Nelson and Lindsey arrived at the mansion, awaiting Chris' return, but when he did not return after a long time, the entire family began to feel worried. Thanks to Sonic though, Chris came home and enjoyed a nice dinner with his family at the mansion during the evening.[2]

After coming home, Lindsey decided to hold a party at the mansion to celebrate her return. The party did not go as expected though, as Cream and Cheese volunteered to help with the party despite Chris telling them to remain hidden. Along the way, Chris discovered that Mr. Tanaka had known about Sonic and his friends' stay in the mansion all along. Also, when Lindsey got herself ready, she was forced to leave to star in another movie. During the party, Sonic and his friends unintentionally revealed themselves despite Chris, Chuck, and Mr. Tanaka's attempts to fool the guests that they did not exist. Eventually, Chris told Ella the whole story, which made Ella aware of the existence of Sonic and his friends.[10]

Later, Chris, Sonic, and their friends discovered that Eggman was using his E-90 Super Sweeper to suck up satellites causing the TV signal in the mansion to be lost. Sonic and Tails tried to stop Eggman, but when they found out that the Tornado 2 could not match E-90, Chuck and Tails went to work to build a better plane in Chuck's secret laboratory. The duo eventually produced the X Tornado, which not only helped the heroes stop E-90, but also became Sonic and his friends' main mode of aerial transport between the Thorndyke Mansion and other destinations outside of Station Square.[3][11] A short while afterward, the residents of the Thorndyke Mansion left the residence for a trip to Emerald Coast.[11] Everyone were later educated in good table manners at the Thorndyke Mansion until they noticed a light coming from the Diamond Stadium. Realizing it was caused by Chaos Emeralds, everyone left the mansion to investigate.[12]

Cream, Cheese, Sonic and Chuck later remained at the Thorndyke Masion while Chris, Amy, and Tails left to look for a Chaos Emerald with Frances at Tingalin Villa. However, when Chuck received an anonymous tip who warned that Chris and the others were in danger, Sonic departed the mansion to make sure his friends were alright.[13]

Chaos Emerald Saga[]

One late night, Sam Speed, the leader of the S-Team visited the mansion to issue a race against Sonic, with the mansion serving as the start of the race. When Sonic and co. tried to object, a large crowd of people standing outside by the mansion's gates had amassed and waiting for the race, which Sonic finally accepted after a long process of persuasion.[14] Sometime later, Chris was at home when he received a call from his father to come to Filmdom City for a surprise regarding his and Lindsey's wedding anniversary. Accepting the invitation, the mansion's residents left for Filmdon City.[15]

Chaos Saga[]

Later on, another large crowd of people gathered outside of the mansion's gates to praise Tails for heroically disarming a missile. However, since Tails rather wanted to find the X Tornado when it was missing, Chuck had the idea of Ella and Mr. Tanaka distracting the crowd by dressing Tanaka as a baby and hide him in a pram Ella drove so the crowd would think Tails was hiding there while Tails escaped unnoticed. When Ella left the mansion with Tanaka in the pram, the plan worked perfectly, and Tails fled when the coast was clear.[16]

When Perfect Chaos launched its flooding of Station Square, Ella, Cream, Cheese, and Chuck evacuated the mansion. Mr. Tanaka decided to stay to wait for Chris. After the others left, Tanaka remained in the mansion and prepared for the worst.[17]

Shadow Saga[]

After what happened with Perfect Chaos, the Thorndyke Mansion had to be repaired from the flood before the Thorndykes and their staff could move back in. As a result, they temporarily moved to the capital while the mansion and grounds were being mended.[18]

Egg Moon Saga[]

Some time later, Cream and Cheese were watching the news at the mansion, during which they learned of Eggman's attempt to rebuild the Moon into the Egg Moon as an apology for the events regarding his grandfather and Space Colony ARK. Shortly after, the mansion was visited by the Chaotix, who were looking for Cream as part of a case they had been hired for. However, mistaking Ella for being a bodyguard for Cream, a scuffle broke out between Vector and Charmy, and Tails, Chris, Amy, and the others, until Sonic returned with Vector's client, Vanilla. Vanilla and Cream were promptly reunited, and Vanilla stayed at the mansion to be with Cream and help out Ella in the kitchen.[19] Later on, when it was discovered that Sonic had started wrecking the Mirror Towers that power the Sunshine Balls provided by Eggman because of a malfunction with the Egg Moon, an angry mob surrounded the mansion.[20] Amy tried to provide a way to the X Tornado by breaking down a wall, but the mob, led by Jerome Wise, prevented them from reaching the aircraft until Sam and his Speed Team arrived, forcing Wise and the mob to disperse under threat of dealing with them if they harmed Sonic's friends or Sam's nephew.[21]

Emerl Saga[]

Later on, Lindsey and Ella were nearly attacked by their own appliances at the mansion due to a sabotage by Eggman that turned them into evil machines to keep Sonic and his friends busy while Eggman escaped from prison.[22]

Homebound Saga[]

Some time later, everyone was at the mansion when Dr. Kim Bickley regarding Project Homebound arrived to discuss the situation regarding the Time Suspension Phenomenon. When Chris learned that Sonic and his friends had to return to their world to prevent time from stopping permanently, he fled in refusal to believe that was the only option.[23] Later, after Chris ran away with Sonic before he could go through the portal back to his world, Lindsey and Nelson were at home trying to figure out what to do before Chuck convinced them of what they needed to do to make things up to Chris for being so busy with work and not having more time to spend with him.[24][25]
