Orbot and Cubot are perhaps my least favourate recent characters in the Sonic games and still like the idea of Nack the Weasel as Dr. Eggmans "on/off" partner for major games.
I imagine his relationship with Dr. Eggman similar to that of Sleet from Sonic Underground except Nack is genuinely hired by Dr. Eggman than forced to work for him out of fear. Nack completely lacks fear of Dr. Eggman and openly mocks his flaws (A lot like Orbot). The idea of such an awkward partnership is because all the jokes that can stem from it. Such as the two bickering, or the two despising Sonic to the point they have more buddy moments.
Particular scenes in mind could be Nacks habit of ditching his contract with Dr. Eggman whenever things get too "explody" around him. Such as Eggmans latest evil scheme going balls-up or if the flying vessel they're on is falling or going to explode. Nack will jump ship.
I know Sega have quickly established Orbot and cubot into modern Sonic lore which I kinda hate, which is why in the Sonic fan games I want, Nack can be Dr. Eggmans partner when neccisary to game story.
First of all, as I've pointed out before, Fang doesn't work for anyone (besides possibly Sonic Triple Trouble), in Sonic the Fighters he was working alongside the heroes to defeat Eggman and his Death Egg II. Tho' he may have been in it for the emeralds and/or money, given that he possibly was after the chaos emeralds in Sonic Triple Trouble for the money, given that they had a hefty price on the market, tho' he may have also been hired by Eggman to catch the emeralds for him, given he was found in Eggman's base at the end of the game. Sleet is from a different continuity, not the games. Besides, Orbot and Cubot are perfectly fine, they're hilarious in my opinion, tho' I find Grounder and Scratch funnier.
Fang doesn't work for anyone, he's just in it for the money, and if you read his wanted poster from Sonic Generations, he's a wanted criminal for robbery and theft, why try to tarnish one's reputation by working with the world's most notorious terrorist if you want to try to scam gullible victims, if they know you work for Eggman, they probably won't buy into your bullshit. If you try referencing Sonic the Comic and the Archie comics, that doesn't have any effect on the canon, for they're basically separate characters, tho' based on the game characters.
If you want to believe Fang will be a better choice than Orbot and Cubot, go ahead, although Fang may just scam his way out if Eggman actually hires him, so he wouldn't be any better. Metal Sonic, tho', is a great second-in-command, he actually got things done (ever see Sonic Heroes). He nearly beat Sonic, for crying out loud, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG HE NEARLY BEAT. Sonic only beat him due to him outrunning Metal by just an inch, and then Metal was fried by Eggman.
Yeah, Metal Sonic would be the best assistant BY FAR.
The idea of the relationship I have in mind between Nack and Eggman is that of an "odd couple". A pair that are purposely incompatable with one another for the sake of humour as well as ideal to progress dialogue and story between the two. And instead of a professional employment, Nack will be no more than hired help than a genuine assistant to Eggman.
Such an idea would also bring back old, yet favourate classic characters, than the need for Sega to come up with brand new ones for the sake of someone to talk to Eggman. Nack as Dr. Eggmans henchie would have more practical functions, such as secondary pilot to various mech-weapons or being a fairly athletic mobian, have standard abilities to counter and keep up with Sonic and is friends. Being familiar wit hthe Special Zone, can be one to collect Chaos Emeralds for Eggman, that is, if he is willing to hand them over.
Orbot and Cubot wer epurely made to give Eggman someone to talk to. They have not served as sub-bosses and in Sonic Lost World, have neutral relations with Sonic and Tails, even going as far as Orbot considering defecting to be Sonic's new sidekick.
Orbot and Cubot are pretty much worse henchbot duos than their predecessors. Scratch and Grounder as well as Sleet and Dingo were more active on the field trying to catch Sonic while Decoe and Bokkun served more as co-pilots to Dr. Eggmans schemes than actively pursuit Sonic, but share the same distain towards Sonic as their creator. Orbot and Cubot do not have any of these qualities and are made purely for banter with Eggman.
