- For other uses of the term, see Titan (disambiguation).
The Titan (タイタン Taitan?) is a type of Dark Gaia's Minions that appears in Sonic Unleashed. These behemoths stand as the largest and most physically imposing of their kind, and are some of the most powerful of Dark Gaia's Minions to come by. They only appear in the game's nighttime stages where they serve as mini-bosses.
The Titans are five meter tall cyclops-like giants with oxford and cyan skin, and have magenta highlights all around their facial and neck area. Their bodies are bulky with large forearms and feet, a broad chest, a thin tail, and a head with two horns and a magenta-colored eye that seemingly float on their neck. They possess curved spikes on their knees, wrists, chest, and back, and has a motif around their neck and shoulders that resembles Dark Gaia's mouth. Additionally, they are often surrounded in a purple smoky aura.
Described as one of "the biggest and baddest" of Dark Gaia's Minions, the Titans are driven by the simple desire to cause destruction and as such do not distinct between allies or foes. However, given that they are able to carve clubs out of trees suggests that they possess some degree of intelligence.
Powers and abilities
The Titans are able to move around by emerging from black puddles on the ground. As a Dark Gaia minion, the Titans can possess people by latching onto the deepest, darkest part of the heart, and generate despair, negative emotions or even erratic behavior that are completely opposite to the person's personality.
Undoubtedly one of the most powerful of Dark Gaia's Minions, the Titans are quite strong creatures. They possess immense physical strength, enough to carry a tree-sized club in one hand with ease, produce powerful shockwaves by impacting the ground, and swat away even Sonic the Werehog with one hand. They also have great physical endurance, enough to be completely unfazed when hit by most of Sonic the Werehog's attacks. Additionally, they possess a limited degree of energy projection, allowing them to channel energy as directed shockwaves along the ground.
The Titans have demonstrated some skills in fighting with clubs, though with limited proficiency, such as just hammering them down on their opponents or swinging them along the ground.
Each Titan carries a two-meter-wide wooden club that they have carved out from trees. In addition to using them for basic melee combat by swinging them at foes, they can also use them to channel energy which they can then send out as a shockwave by hammering them into a surface.
The Titans and the rest of Dark Gaia's Minions came into being when Dark Gaia broke apart in the beginning of Sonic Unleashed due to its premature awakening by Dr. Eggman. These fragments were then spread across the Earth and became Dark Gaia's Minions, with the Titans some amongst them. They first appear in Windmill Isle Night Act 1 in the PS3/Xbox 360 version and in Dragon Road Night Act III: Path to Darkness in the PlayStation 2/Wii version.
The Titans are some of the toughest enemies encountered in the game, their attacks being quite devastating and can cause a lot of damage. They also have very large amounts of health and are resistant to lightning- and fire-based status aliments. They also only flinch when hit by Sonic the Werehog's most powerful attacks, meaning their movements are nearly unstoppable. However, they are very slow, meaning their attacks are easy to read. When combatting Titans, it is advisable to attack them when they have their guard down and then run away when they are about to attack. They also come in a stronger variant called Red Titans (Wii/PlayStation 2 version only).
On the PS3/Xbox 360 version, the Titans will, when fighting them close up, either try to hit the player with their club or lash out with their free arm. For long-range attacks, the Titans will either launch a shockwave at the player from their clubs or create wide shockwaves that damage both Sonic and enemies alike. Being hit by any of the Titan's attacks will leave Sonic immobilized until it either wears off or the player has rapidly pressed the jump button. On the PlayStation 2/Wii version, the Titans' movements are a little faster. Here, they will attack the player with their clubs in an up to three three-hit combo or spin them around to hit everything within their radius.
Upon the reconstruction of Dark Gaia by Dr. Eggman, all of the Titans along with the other Dark Gaia minions were returned to the beast, who was later defeated and sealed within the planet's core.
In other media
The Titan had appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, where it is called the Dark Gaia Titan. In this media, it is one of the biggest and strongest Dark Gaia Creatures who appeared during the Shattered World Crisis.
The Dark Gaia Titan first appearance was in Sonic Universe #65, where it ambushed Knuckles, the Chaotix, and the Hooligans in the Aquatic Mine Zone. Knuckles and the Chaotix tried to fight it, but ended up being trapped with it in a flooding cave by the Hooligans. When Knuckles and the Chaotix managed to escape, the Dark Gaia Titan followed them to the Hooligans. There, Charmy tricked Bean to help weaken the Dark Gaia Titan, before Knuckles finished it off.
- Titan is one of the Dark Gaia Minions seen threatening Tails in a cutscene in Apotos.
- Interestingly, though, Titan first appears in Apotos via cutscene for both PS3/Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2/Wii versions, but yet for the latter version, Titan does not appear until Dragon Road.
- The Titans in the PlayStation 2/Wii version seem smaller than the ones in the PS3/Xbox 360 version. Also, Titans in the PS3/Xbox 360 version only face the player and only move to attack and face the player whereas in the PlayStation 2/Wii they move around freely. Interestingly, you can fight more than one Titan at a time like in Jungle Joyride Night Act IV: Heavenly Ruins. In the PS3/Xbox 360 edition you only fight one Titan.
- The Titans in PS3/Xbox 360 version can still be paralyzed by electricity from the other minions, however shortly.
